  • In 1990, American professor and poet Frances Mayes felt an irresistible urge to buy a derelict 300-year-old property. She transformed it into one of the most famous villas in Tuscany, attracting a constant stream of tourists, thanks to her bestselling memoir about restoring the house, called "Under the Tuscan Sun." The book spent more than two-and-a-half years on the bestseller list, and later became a popular film. Mayes talks with correspondent Rita Braver about her unexpected success, her adopted village of Cortona, and her latest book, "See You in the Piazza: New Places to Discover in Italy." (Originally broadcast May 19, 2019.)

It's my go to movie when I feel like I had enough
      and want to start over.
      Maybe someday...
I'll buy me a small villa
      somewhere idyllic in
      europe. ❤

What a wonderful villa. The surrounding property is idyllic and the town is everything you’d dream of! Congratulations Frances for getting out of the mold and taking a chance. For some reason when Frances (in the movie) put the sunflowers in the cup it really touched me. Strange how just a small thing like that can effect you.

Lovely movie, the house, the town, the people, the food, the views, the sun, the ambience, the weather...

Personally, I felt that Hollywood took too much freedom with the original story as Frances Mayes wrote it.....they had to "glam" it up and make more of romance out of it.....and the Polish bricklayer becoming a flag thrower in an ancient tradition was ridiculous......that just would never happen!!!

Thank you so much for having this here! I am currently reading, "Thoughts of Home: Reflections on Families, Houses, and Homelands from the Pages of House Beautiful," a collection of essays I found at John K. King Books here in Detroit, MI. Had no idea among the pure magic packed into these 292 pages, I'd soon happen upon, "Under the Etruscan Wall" written by Frances Mayes about Bramasole before Under the Tuscan Sun. The beautiful idea of Bramasole made me research further, which is where I learned she is who she is today. What a fascinating, inspiring discovery that moment became for me! Thank you again for having this here. Looks like I have more reading to do!

Interesting to me is that yesterday I envisioned having an old house similar to this one. It was a bit austere, but had the same warm feeling of being at home within. I was surprised that I was content living in such and old structure, modestly updated to modern standards. Makes me wonder if living in Italy will become a reality for me. Wild to think about!

The book is wonderful - the movie typical Hollywood BS. Frances is a warm, witty writer and the person is equally charming. Cortona is my favorite place in all of Italy, and my wife and I are visible in the speaking engagement shot; which has nothing to do with my affection of her or there.
