  • Hello and welcome to my new channel.
I love the Elder Scrolls games, and the music is one of my favourite elements of all of the games.
I listen to video game music all the time, and my most played video game music album is Jeremy Soule's Oblivion score, so I thought I would rank it for fun and also as a way to see which are the community's most beloved tracks.
Please let me know your preferences in the comments below, I am super interested to hear about it ❤️

An interesting note to add, Soul was in near fatal car crash while working on the oblivion sound track and having survived wanted "to comment on the human condition and the beauty of life." as he puts it, this near death experience gave us such a beautiful and ethereal soundtrack that has yet to be topped imo
    Great video

The music really compensated for the less polished, technically limited aspects of the game. The air in the caves felt damp and cool. The towns felt warm and inviting. The castles felt grandiose. The level of immersion was unparalleled. Oblivion was already somewhat outdated when I first played it in late 2011, and it blew me away regardless.
My favorite tracks are probably Watchman's Ease, Glory of Cyrodiil, and Peace of Akatosh.

Auriel's Ascension is my absolute favorite piece of music, let alone video game OST, ever. It's haunting yet gentle introduction lifts you up into Aetherius and lets you gaze out, and when the plucks of the piano come in, it's a meticulous and beautiful melody. It's so beautiful, listening to it makes me tear up sometimes.
Because for some reason, the track cannot be heard in the Xbox 360 version of the game, which is an utter shame. So it actually took me years to finally listen to it after picking up Oblivion.
But god I love this game and the music.

I never knew that, feels like a pretty significant miss in my opinion!
Luckily I played it on PS3 for the first time, and the only console specific issue that I remember was not being able to cure vampirism unless you switched your console to German - the dialogue that accepts the ingredients for the cure wasn’t available in any other languages on the console.
Much prefer that than having to miss out on Auriel’s Ascension!

As someone who loves talking about soundtracks, elder scrolls and ranking literally everything I possibly can, this is exactly my niche.
Both this and Skyrim have such fantastic soundtracks that you can genuinely start calling each track a masterpiece after the bottom 5-6 tracks, they are both such tough rankings to do. I've tried ranking Skyrim's soundtrack before and it feels like picking between children.
I think Peace of Akatosh and King and Country are my two favourites but there are so many classics. It is hilarious that Harvest Dawn has become the most iconic track from the game.

He also did some amazing work on older title like Icewind Dale 1-2 and a few more. Tbh though, I think he has done want he wants to do and needs to do already. The ruined his career aspect is quite sad, but i'm not sure he would have stayed anyway.

Your commentary on All's Well reminded me of one of my oblivion characters, Reads-All-Books. He's an argonian vampire who owns Battlehorn Castle with a very simple quest - read all the books. I'd usually play that save in the evening, just chilling out in the study and reading all the books that I'd bought from the book shop in the Imperial City. I'd only walk places unless I was fast travelling, and I never really fought unless there was a book at the end of a quest. I mostly did the quests that don't require that you fight, and its quite an interesting way to experience the game.
Oh, I also have a cute dog! I'm pretty sure its not supposed to be able to leave the shivering isles but my game glitched and it appeared in my castle. Thanks Ushnar

There are TWO versions of "Reign of the Septims":
    1. The one you hear in the main menu
    2. The one you hear in the INTRO
I personally like the SECOND one much better, and I wonder why nobody ever talks about it. The way the theme is paced to Uriel Septim's narration and the transition after he says "These are the closing days of the third era.... And the final hours of my life" Creates so much suspension and epicness. You go from a soft French horn to a staccato of strings doing a crescendo and suddenly you have THE WHOLE BRASS SECTION playing the leitmotif emphasized by cymbals, as the camera hovers over the imperial city in all its majesty.

One of the things that breaks my gamer heart is new comers asking online if "going back to play these games is worth it" since they're afraid it will be too dated either by graphics or mechanics or some other fear of the "old". Maybe they'll move past that one day and just experience all the beauty and wonder these games have to offer.

Oh my god, you were stressing me out when I wasn't seeing Auriel's Ascension on the list! It's definitely my number one pick as well. It just has a perfect mix of a sort of sadness and longing, while still being hopeful for the future. Like walking along a path in the wilds, alone on a dark, rainy night. Thinking of your home and a family you haven't seen in too long. But then the sun starts to peek over the mountains and in the dawn the rainclouds start to clear and you see your hometown in the distance.
Maybe I read into it too mush haha But I also agree with you putting a lot of the dungeon and combat music lower on the list as a lot of them don't really stand apart from one another. I have an extra degree of disdain for Oblivion's combat music as it won't stop playing even if it's just cuz a random mudcrab is still chasing me even though I outran him 3 miles back.
I know this video is older than your other two, but thanks again for talking about these lesser thought about subjects in Oblivion! c:

My top three have got to be Minstrel's Lament, Auriel's Ascension, and Reign of the Septims... followed shortly after by Through the Valleys.
I think Auriel's Ascension is very interesting in regards to the lore. I made a post linking the similarities with Auriel's ascension and Uriel VII's death which can be seen on the Oblivion subreddit. How the song compares this mythical sorrow with the sorrow experienced now, throughout Cyrodiil.

Morrowind was my first and still holds a place in my heart as a sort of home away from home for me. When I stepped off the boat to Solstheim in Elder Scrolls V, tears immediately sprang to my eyes. But it is the Oblivion soundtrack that I return to most often, and I agree that it must be one of the best that video games have to offer in all of their history.

Something worth pointing out is that Soule was involved in a car accident during the production of Oblivion's OST and during an interview he claimed that this experience highly impacted on not only his personal life but also the the tracks in the OST.
Quote from Eurogamer:" [...] It was during the time that he was working on the Oblivion soundtrack, while travelling south from Canada through Washington State, that his car veered into oncoming traffic. Soule emerged from the crash unscathed, much to the surprise of those who saw the damage to his car, though he believes that the leather jacket he was wearing at the time may well have saved his left arm. As anyone might expect, the crash had a profound effect upon him and in subsequent interviews he explained that the experience fed into Oblivion's soundtrack, telling one interviewer that he wanted "to comment on the human condition and the beauty of life."
""I think music comes from a universal energy, from a place that's way out there. I don't want to say it's pseudo-religious or pseudo-philosophical. It's just intuitive. I believe music comes from somewhere else and I believe that we are here, on earth, to transcribe it and share what we find."
This made the OST hit different for me, specially Auriel's Ascencion.

Canada huh? It's weirdly interesting. When I play oblivion it ALWAYs feels like its cold outside and the music only fed into that feeling. Great work. I agree with generally ranking the peaceful music over the combat themes--95% of the time we're listening to the peaceful tracks. That's what makes up much of the ambience. Music is one of the elements that "makes the game," and it's certainly true in Elder Scrolls.

    • @cobalt968

The peaceful music does a great job of evoking feelings of comfort and wonder. I think that the various homes and worldspaces in Oblivion (modded or otherwise) were so enhanced by these soundtracks, such that even the homes in Skyrim or Morrowind can’t quite compare.

    • @Skumtomten1
      @Skumtomten1 Před 3 měsíci +1

Yea, though combat music is not really meant to be "good" in that sense. It is more meant to get your adrenaline pumping rather than being a great piece of music. I think Oblivion has great combat themse overall still.

Okay! Hello! This is a high quality video for your first ever! I'm going through a huge elder scrolls phase again after picking up skyrim again. Oblivion is my favourite too. I didn't know a single name of the songs and I'm so happy I do now. Subscribed, looking forward to your next upload!

I have played ESO for years, which has music from all the Elder Scrolls games. It's always been my favorite when a track from Oblivion starts playing.

Great list! I totally agree on the top two--the moment I saw it, I immediately knew what the clear choice for #1 would be. If I ranked them, I'd mostly make small changes, aside from putting March of the Marauders at #3. That track just feels like what every other combat theme in the game is leading up to, a climax that could easily be a final boss theme. It puts me in mind of dueling a Dremora Valkynaz on one of those long bridges between Oblivion towers, or at the top of one of the Corpse Mashers, one step away from a plunge into the abyss, managing health and fatigue and positioning all at once before sending the enemy into the abyss with an expert-level power attack. It's what combat in Oblivion is all about!

    • @LordMangudai
      @LordMangudai Před 5 měsíci +1

March of the Marauders is definitely Oblivion's best combat track, that choir elevates it above the others

I LOVE the Oblivion soundtrack, it just takes me right back to my childhood. This video was well done, I'm excited to see what else this channel will get into in the future!
Edit: YES! Auriel's Ascension earned that #1 spot. No other track would do!

Probably the best game OST of all time, Age of Empires II coming in close second. I constantly go back to it on CZcams or spotify. This game really turned me on to RPGs and it has stuck with me ever since. Skyrim and Morrowind may be more popular, but nobody can deny Oblivion's warm relaxing atmosphere.

Can't believe that "Tension" got the last place, it's actually one of my favorites. It's so tense, stressful. Words can't describe how uneasy I feel when listening to it, just perfect for a tense or erie scene. My other favorites are Minstrel's lament, Harvest dawn, Auriel's ascension and reign of the septims.

    - Angelika talking about Defending the gate: "Short but epic."
    - Me: That's what she said!
On a serious note, you really have a lovely calming voice! I would pay a chestfull of septims to hear you do TES themed ASMR-roleplay. With some calm Jeremy Soule in the background, ofc.
At the same time, I also love how obviously passionate you are about the themes in all your videos. I didn't think I could get so captured by talk about mundane (stat-less) clothing in a game, but you rub off on me.

Jeremy soule is a genius. I recently realized that part of Unbroken Road in Skyrim's soundtrack sounds like part of Reign of the Septims and I think that's just so great. In fact, a lot of Skyrim's tracks remind me of Oblivion tracks, which is so great in my mind.

  • @ogrejd

"Reign of the Septims" is one of the best opening themes in video game history (and the opening cinematic itself is way up there, too, especially the end when it zooms in on your cell).

through the valleys and king and country is probably my fav, it just perfectly captures that feeling of adventure always wanting to see whats over the next hill and the beauty of the world around you asking you to take in your surroundings as you listen,
these were the first two tracks that played for me and one after the other they were perfect, coming out to through the valleys it starts with so little and quickly increases it just feels written deliberately to be the start so much so i thought that time it was a set start one, and king and country is just perfect to follow it up the way it rises and is quicker its a perfect second track as you reach higher ground and overlook this new world and the sense of adventure fills you, i especially associate it with reaching over the tree tops and dark of dementia as the sky opens up in mania and i saw from that ridge in the middle of the shivering isles the true scale of where i was for the first time, and as i listen to them now i could provide so many examples of memorable moments like this which i think is oblivions strongest quality, nothing feels like it didnt have a place there, nothing feels like “content” its all memorable more than any other game ive played

the growing excitement i felt with each ranking that passed, having not heard my favourite track until we finally reached number one! maybe a hot take, but are you really an oblivion fan if your top track isn't auriel's ascension?

  • @duncanthomson7894
    @duncanthomson7894 Před 5 měsíci +2

My copy of oblivion was bugged (no surprises there) but it never played Auriel's Acension, so I didn't hear it until quite recently, I haven't been able to attach it to my experience of the game yet, as lovely as it is.
I just picked up on something else about the track Death Knell, it seems to me like it shares a lot with Reign of the Septims, but a faster beat and the darker, descending strings. I love when composers make combat versions of the main theme, just like One They Fear in Skyrim.

My favourites would also be the calmer, more serene ones: wings of kynareth, watchsmans ease, glory of cyrodiil, sunrise of flutes, harvest dawn and auriel's ascension
looking forward to the skyrim OST ranking 🙂

What fascinates me so much when I'm playing Elder Scrolls games (including ESO which I play ALL the time), is that the Gods in this world are supposed to be REAL they're not just some far away Greek mythology. So to hear music about Kynareth or Akatosh/Auriel is just so amazing...to think that somewhere, the gods flew away/disappeared or whatever and that they still exist. And to know that Meridia was part of the Magna Ge and that she, of probably all the powerful beings known as Daedric Princes (even though she is TOTALLY NOT in almost every way), she probably knows all these secrets about the world and its creation and the gods themselves and so on. I just wanna ask Meridia shit and see if she'll answer in these games but of course, it's a video game :( It's frustrating knowing that she's just hanging out in ESO and yet we may never know some of those secrets. There is a little music box you can get in ESO called "Dawnbreaker's Forging" or something like that, and it plays a totally fitting ethereal, almost god-like song befitting of something Meridia created. Of course, I have it in my player house right behind a giant statue to Auriel standing with his sword and an eagle behind him.

I started on Morrowind and had a gaming hiatus. By the time I tried Oblivion, I was initially upset and felt alienated from my familiar...alien world of Vvardenfell. I had no idea that the rest of Tamriel including basic European-inspired settings and wildlife. But the music still put me in that same mood Morrowind did. Kind of lonely, kind of cozy. Skyrim has some of that, but it has other factors competing for the mood where the previous two installations didn't.

I hope you will cover both Morrowind and Skyrim's OSTs too. Totally agree that Auriel's Ascension is the best track. I played Oblivion after being a Morrowind fan for a while (and I played it right after it's release being a maximalist teenager...), at first was disappointed and called this music "Missing my dear Morrowind". Nowadays I grew to appreciate Oblivion and genuinely love it.
