I lost my gallbladder on atkins/keto. It was impacted into my liver and I arrived septic to the ER. 7 hour surgery - required an Emergency Assist Surgeon. Dr said it was the 2nd worst he’d seen in 15 years. He told me the keto diet paid his bills as 95% of his patients followed that way of eating. Upon my discharge he said, “Go enjoy a bowl of oatmeal and some fruit..” Took me 6 months to recover from that surgery. Starch based now. Feel phenomenal. Bloodwork is perfect. BP is 117/76 after being in the 180’s/110’s the entire time I ate keto/atkins/low carb. I do miss feta cheese on my salad and cream cheese on my bagel but -- never again.

I tried doing a vegan keto diet recently (i'm already vegetarian / mostly vegan) and let me say I got so sick! I'm currently having to go get medical tests and bloodwork because my body has been in shock since this all started. I also have hypothyroidism (caused by cancer treatments) and the diet may have harmed my thyroid. I have severe hypothyroidism symptoms now despite being medicated. Keto might work for some people but it certainly can be harmful to others. I guess the take-home point here is to consult your doctor before doing any new diet - especially very restrictive ones. I followed the rules and tracked all my food with keto - did a ton of research before starting but I never consulted my doctor and now my body and my health are paying for it dearly.I felt great for about 3 days and then I started feeling progressively worse - not just keto flu but detrimentally sick. I missed 2 days of work and had horrible insomnia too. Started feeling hypoglycaemic - the list goes on. I won't be going on keto again - I almost ended up in hospital.

Hey Buddy - I love your enthusiasm, and would be more than happy to come on your show to chat all things keto.
0:30 First off, the state of ketosis isn’t a “starvation state” it can be referred to as a metabolic state, opposite of a glucose-burning state, but is VERY far away from starvation. The body would have to burn through much of its fat stores, and protein stores before a starvation state would occur.
1:28 Sadly, the “well design studies” for ketosis were primarily focused on sick children. Therefore, it’s hard to correlate results with what would occur in a healthy adult.
1:35 I’ve coached many of my vegan clients into a ketogenic state, so I totally value a “vegans opinion”. I used to be one, so we’re cool.
2:55 Some of the symptoms you mention are symptoms of becoming fat adapted. Not going to lie, the transition is HARD, but once you get over the hump, it’s amazing! And, rats are not people.
3:11 Keto acidosis cannot happen in a non-diabetic individual
5:28 research has proven that eggs and oil are not bad for us. Please read “The Big Fat Surprise”
5:33 High cholesterol doesn’t mean issues with health. My cholesterol had to get to 500 in order for me to get my period back. High cholesterol is not BAD. Again, please read current papers. When I went on a plant-based diet I lost my period… for 8 years.
7:37 Wait, do I have keto eyes? Naw…
    and on, and on…
    8:03 I used a keto diet to:
    1) get my period back (I did after 1.5 years)
    2) lose 12% body fat (in 2 months)
    3) lower anxiety
    4) improve mood
    5) eat more (I eat about 3,500 calories a day)
    6) boost athletic performance
    7) abolish brain fog
    8) end my eating disorder (I’ve been ED free for 452 days)
    9) increase muscle mass
    10) regulate sex hormones
    11) become fertile (I ovulate every 29 days now)
    12) clear my acne
    13) improve digestive function

All in all, you can say MANY of these same things against a vegan diet. I get what you’re trying to do here, but it’s unfortunate that you didn’t look at all angles. It was the same issue with Sara’s blog post against the ketogenic diet, it was all about epileptic children. We cannot compare what an epileptic child experiences on a 4 to 1 ketogenic diet to what a 30-something healthy male or female would experience.
I could go on and on but I won’t. All I’d like to end with is that - the vegan diet is good, the keto diet is good, all eating styles CAN be good for the individual. We have to be open to the fact that we’re all different, and sadly your video didn’t do a very good job with this.
Again, would love to have a conversation with you about it!

HealthfulPursuit I'd rather get the the studies straight. I can't open a link without getting three pop up advertisements in my face. The one study you did link was on cholesterol later in life and statin medication.
Now, I can comment on the actual science rather than books sold to people who like meats and fatty foods and don't mind parting with twenty bucks to feel better about it.
First off, let's ignore the statin trials because we know they have some side effects. Let's look at cholesterol later in life. Some associations show a link between low cholesterol and death.

    Starved bran on ketones article:
"Ketone body consumption by the brain has an essential role in preserv-ing life" - the article is rather positive regarding keto.
    Kidney stones article:
"Kidney stones continue to occur in approximately 1 in 20 children on the ketogenic diet, and no statistically significant risk factors were identified in this cohort"
    Child dies on keto article:
"A 9-year-old girl had a seizure disorder with associated developmental delay owing to glucose transport protein deficiency." - Well... a really sick kid can die from any diet, not the diets fault really.
15% of keto children had enlarged.. article:
"Twenty patients on the ketogenic diet at one institution were investigated. Prolonged QT interval (QTc) was found in 3 patients (15%)" - It's easy to make 15% sound like a big number before you reveal it was 3 persons.
Sudden cardiac death is keto diet article:
Not available anymore... could not find the article.
GI disturbances, low blood protein keto diet article:
"The KD is a safe and efficacious therapy for intractable childhood epilepsy in Chinese children" - The article is positive regarding the diet
Study with large list of adverse effects, deficiency article:
This is a study on treating epilepsy, children with complications and illness. Any diet on sick patients will have adverse effects.
    More adverse effects article:
Still only regarding experiments to treat epilepsy.. you cannot just read keto articles on sick kids... really?
Higher Cortisol on Keto Diet Study article:
"During the run-in phase, we obtained baseline data for study outcomes, restricted energy intake of participants to achieve a 12.5% decrease in body weigh" - Now if you restrict the calorie intake, you're not doing keto.
Keto equal to other low carb diet in weight loss, adverse effects article:
Just saying that keto isnt more weight loss than medium low-carb. This compares weight loss in low carb vs low carb. Really?
Low Carb Diets Increase All Cause Mortality article:
"Our meta-analysis supported long-term harm and no cardio-vascular protection with low-carbohydrate diets. However, theobservational studies were limited and moderately heterogeneous. Our findings underscore the imminent need for large-scale trialson the complex interactions between low-carbohydrate diets andlong-term outcomes." - Well they are basically saying their findings are not enough to be trusted.

Eoin O'Chionnáigh been on the ketogenic diet myself I have heard some results of people who in with high cholesterol. Generally they say it gets higher before I get to lower depending on the length of time you've been on it. But my question for you is that did you eat a lot of vegetables while you were on the keto diet or not? Some people on the keto diet recommend at least 7 to 10 cups of vegetables a day. Specifically Dr. Berg. Just curious I'm on the ketogenic diet and it worked wonders for me. But I'm still experimenting.

Hey thanks for the comment! I think in retrospect, I should have eaten more vegetables, but I was scared to go over 20g net carbs a day, sometimes I'd go as high as 50g though. I ate a lot of nuts, and I mean a lot! So I thought with that fiber along with a tomato, some leafy green salad and a serving of cruciferous vegetables I would be okay, but it just didn't work out that way, I ended up getting very VERY high uric acid and pains in my knees. There was actually one week were I only ate meat, which was surprisingly easy. I would advise anyone on the keto diet to avoid burning their cheese (which is supposed to be really bad for you, i.e grilling), stick to boiling their meat, and try to get 30-50g fiber a day anyway you can. I think if I did that my cholesterol and uric acid would not have been so terrible. Good luck and stay open minded on your path to health!

I agree with your first point. I have to add, though, that there is no such thing as a 'vegan diet'. Veganism is simply the refusal to purchase or consume anything that comes from animals. A 'vegan diet' isn't really a thing. You get keto vegans, paleo vegans, high carb low fat vegans, whole food vegans, junk food vegans...
Some people do choose a plantbased diet for health and believe animal foods to be unhealthy. That's not what vegan means, though. I think Mic wasn't correct in comparing 'keto' to 'vegan' because to do so doesn't really make sense: You can be vegan and go into ketosis, and 'vegan' isn't a diet (although it is, in part, about what you eat).
      I hope that makes sense!

    • @ToasterTrain
      @ToasterTrain Před 7 lety +2

Agreed... I did a bit more research into the program I facilitate with a doctor (I focus on behavioural modification and he focusses on the nutritional science). The approach Mic is speaking of is INCREDIBLY extreme and not what a typical or average user of a ketogenic model would support. In fact, when done properly you can achieve ketosis while still eating 140 grams of green leafy veggies per day (measure that out, most people can't even eat that many in a day) as well as 6 servings (cups) of other veggies. It is also possible to be keto and vegan (in fact, I am and it's totally sustainable!). I love Mic's videos and will keep watching as I am only newly vegan but finding lots of options (i have not missed or craved meat even once.

    • @ToasterTrain
      @ToasterTrain Před 7 lety +2

I agree with you as well. I would also say that when done properly, Keto isn't a diet either. It's a term that is used to describe a state that the body goes into but it is also (in modern times) represented as a lifestyle, a choice in food, an attitude, and correct food behaviours. It's a fully sustainable model when applied correctly!

I have read through maybe half of the articles provided. I have a bachelors degree in kinesiology (the scientific study of human motion, and it's systems). I have been following a very low carbohydrate diet for 4 years now, breaking it every Christmas season to eat holidays meals with loved ones. Here are my thoughts, briefly summarized.
Many of these articles are specific to epileptic children. Any results from these studies CANNOT be applied to the general public, whose anatomy and physiology is not the same. The fact most do not describe what specifically is being fed to the patients is problematic. They claim nutritional deficiencies, and then fail to describe what the nutrient profile of their patient's diets. Keto diets especially come in many drastically different forms and cannot be all lumped into one category. On top of that, the trials appeared to be on the small end, with successful results in terms of reduced seizures. So definitely a route worth examining in greater detail still.
Cholesterol is it's own rabbit hole. No research supports the idea that LDL cholesterol correlates with heart disease at all. The recently discovered sub-fractions of LDL cholesterol (by Krauss in the 1980's) is a promising line of research exonerating the effect of saturates on LDL cholesterol, which makes the total amount of LDL measured in the blood immaterial in terms of CVD risk. But HDL cholesterol has been shown to be far more strongly correlated anyway, so is worth more attention than LDL cholesterol. But this fact has been strangely ignored by the mainstream research community for no apparent reason. Look up Krauss's work on LDL cholesterol, it's quite fascinating.

My ketone levels were high but I didnt feel the boost that people claim. I started the keto diet after a 3 day no food fast, and while that was hard at the beginning, one the 2nd day I wasnt having hunger pains and I had never felt so good in all my life. During the fast my ketones spiked up and my dark circles around my eyes disappeared and my skin looked flawless. I was standing up straight and tall and life felt effortless. I thought keto was a hack diet but thought it might extend this feeling. See my fast ended when I was making my daughter a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and by habit I licked the spoon which caused my hunger pains to return and I couldnt at that point resist eating. But keto made me feel about as bad as I have ever felt in my life.

This is a joke. The internet is filled with people pushing their own nutrition dogma, which is one of the biggest problems in following any nutrition advice. Often times the "guru" pushes what works best for them and people automatically assume they can achieve the same results when in fact everyone responds differently. The point is, some people will excel on a ketogenic diet while others will not. The serious folks who look at science and have extensive clinical experience will say that right away.
I'll just make two points from the first two minutes of your video which highlight your misunderstanding (and many others) about a ketogenic type diet.
1:10 - "meat, oil, dairy, eggs, and a few plants on the side". I've been following a ketogenic diet for over a year now and 2/3rd of my plate by volume is vegetables, 75% of which is leafy greens and fermented cabbage, typically at least 1 avocado a day as well. The point is, many people can make the mistake of not eating enough plant materials. That's the same for any diet.
1:13 - "just one banana would put you over your carb limit". Again, it's highly individualized. I can tolerate 50 - 70 grams daily of carbohydrates and still remain in a state of ketosis. Some people will need to be as low as 20 grams. I eat berries, citrus, and other seasonal fruits. I have no problem eating a banana, but would rather have the former.
I could go on and on, but I'm not going to waste any more time here. It's great that you know what works best for you, but there is a ton of valid information and science out there about the benefits of a ketogenic diet as it relates to health, athletic performance, and weight loss. But it's not for everyone. One of the best resources is "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" and "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance".
Don't be a fool and think that you've got it figured out. I get blood work done regularly and have seen tremendous benefits from a ketogenic diet, but like anything, you need to be informed about it and learn from your mistakes. One of the biggest mistakes for people starting out on a ketogenic diet (the phase that we call keto adaptation) is monitoring sodium levels and making sure to eat plenty of plants. Some of the benefits I've gotten from a ketogenic diet: increased athletic performance, fat loss (I'm below 10% body fat), increased mental focus/memory, lack of hunger cravings, and the list goes on.

I was seriously addicted to sugar having grown up in a family where sugar was a part of nearly everything we ate. We drank sodas, sweet tea, and gallons of Kool-Aid loaded with multiple cups of sugar per gallon. Both my mom and dad were expert cooks and bakers so there was no shortage of sweets at any time. I was never fat but my health began to turn for the worse after I turned 50 (currently 63). Since beginning a Keto diet I no longer eat or have cravings for sugar. My diet consists of tons of vegetables, moderate fats and protein, and low carbs. I eat one sometimes two meals per day then fast for at least 18 hours before the next cycle of meals. I only drink lemon water, tea, and coffee all unsweetened and I DON'T SNACK. My health has improved greatly since I started and I have no problems sticking to the diet because I no longer have cravings for anything sweet. My goal was not so much to lose weight (even though I did), but to wean myself from sugar which I did. The diet I'm on is touted as a "Healthy" Keto diet which implies there are unhealthy Keto diets. So even though the diet works for me, I do understand the reason for concern. Keto is great for losing weight but maybe it should not be used as a long term solution. One must use common sense based on knowledge and not just follow the Keto gurus. I think all diets must be tailored to the individual and no one knows you better than you. So just be careful, learn as much about the diet as possible and implement what works for you.

43 seconds in and you are already wrong about how ketosis works :(
A few of the studies you researched are with diets containing processed meats. I will not argue with you, they do cause harm. THAT BEING SAID meaningful correlations can be found by lowering inflammation through a proper keto diet. This will lower blood glucose and reduce LDL oxidisation.
Processed meats are bad - agreed
Other studies you cited: The dangers of saturated fat are real WHEN PRESENT IN THE BLOOD STREAM what causes this you ask? Insulin. Produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar.
Saturated fat in the diet while in ketosis with *no insulin* present in the bloodstream does not cause heart problems and is shown since the 20's to lower risk.
Saturated fats are bad - agreed (when eating carbs as well)
This is documented well. It is crucial to differentiate the studies based on those who are observed eating high fat and *low carbs* with those eating healthy fats and *no carbs * (aka no insulin production) there are huge differences and both were labelled as "keto" in this video. Please do not clump together results to make it fit your youtube channel.

Her claims are all bogus as they are a result of nutrient deficiency. That's not a result of keto. Anyone can have nutrient deficiency off any diet. It's actually more common on vegan because you aren't getting omega 3s without supplements. It's impossible to get omega 3 dha/epa from the vegan diet. Omega 3 ALA is only converted around 1 percent to DHA/EPA. Keto never requires any supplementation for their diet. Think about that.

Sarah's claims that keto has drug like effects is nonsense. There is actual science explaining the different metabolic pathways utilized for ketones vs glucose. The body using fat as fuel is very good in terms of health. Having low insulin most of the time is optiminal for health as advanced glycation end products thrive in the body when insulin is high. Viruses also feed off glucose. Ketones have many better effects for health than glucose. In fact the body considers excess glucose toxic. It immediately tries to get it out of the blood stream after 4 grams. That's why it spikes insulin and starts the process of de novo lipogenesis turning it into fat.
The only downside to keto is that you won't have any fat stores so if you go on a long period of fasting. The body will start feeding off muscles. However in modern society. You never need to fast for a long time as you always have access to food. I fast once in a while to reap the benefits of autophagy and growth hormone spikes. I will never fast more than 24 hrs.
I believe everyone can enter ketosis. When you don't eat any food. Your body will be forced to enter ketosis targeting your own fat storage. I averaged 5/8 Lbs ( 283g) of oraganic almonds per day .I was moving , remodeling a house and farming and I did not have time to cook so I just ate the almonds and salads

I noticed your channel bashes the ketogenic diet quite a bit. Let me explain my situation and why that diet works for me. During 1999 in Kuwait something happened that made my thyroid produce at the level of a 99 year old person. I think it was radiation since I was around that, but something changed when I got back. After 10 years of weight gain I went from 173 to 305. It has been hell to get the weight off over the years and I've had the opinion of a lot of doctors along the way. I developed type two diabetes about five years ago and have struggled with that a lot. I tried doing the vegan diet, but any grain products I ate would spike my blood sugar. Wheat was by far the worst, but the normal other grains always created a response. My dad went on the keto diet and has been eating that way for over two years. He lost 80 pounds the first year and stopped taking all medications. I figured that may help me so I tried it. I did it for three months and it made a world of difference. All my blood sugars stayed in the normal range without medication. My lipid panels all returned to normal ranges. The diet is hard to stay on for me. Vegan was even worse for me. I returned back to the normal diet trying to be more health conscious, but eventually my A1C went back to 14 and I started back on the insulin which really makes things worse. By diet and exercise changes I was able to get it back to around 8 but while taking two oral medications. I told the doctors I'd never take insulin again because of the weight gain that comes with it. So I came to a choice of either taking medications the rest of my life or going back on the keto diet. The whole problem with diabetes is being carb intolerant. If people are lactose intolerant, they cut out the lactose products. Being carb intolerant, it only makes sense to remove the carbohydrates from the diet. After two weeks of being back on the keto diet my blood sugars are normal again without the medications. I suppose if I did vegan without doing grains it would have a similar effect, but eating that way is very difficult for me. I'm definitely not knocking being vegan, but you should tone down the keto bashing because it does work for some of us out here with diabetes. I bought some cook books this time around for keto recipes and it's opened up a whole new world for me. I have made some tasty items using mainly almond flour that are low in carbs and high in fat/protein. If I want to remove the diabetes as a health factor and get off the medications, this is really the only choice I have that I can stick with for the rest of my life.

The mechanics of insulin resistance is TOO MUCH INSULIN. Understand? Too much insulin flooding your system causes the cells to become resistant to that insulin hormone. What causes your pancreas to pump out excessive insulin? A high carb (sugar) diet will cause insulin spikes that spike higher and last longer flooding your system with this excessive insulin. Does consuming saturated fat cause excessive insulin spikes? NO IT DOES NOT. Sugar/carbs cause these excessive spikes. To say "the best research" is a joke. You understand there is no good research on this topic? And NEVER will be? The only way would be to lock a substantial number (1,000?) of people up and tightly control what they eat for a significant amount of time which would be just too expensive and therefore will NEVER happen.

No, that is not true, and in fact, you kind of have the causal arrows backwards--to much insulin release is a direct by-product of insulin resistance.
When you eat lots of fat--especially saturated fat--the cells in your muscles get full of fat, so then if you eat some carbs, insulin ferries the resulting glucose to the muscle cells, "knocks on the door" of the muscle cell, but insulin signaling is impaired, and the cell doesn't let the glucose in, as if it is saying to the insulin "Go away, I am already full of fat so I can't take your glucose)." But the body can't have all that excess glucose hanging out in the bloodstream, so it releases even more insulin to try to force the glucose into the cells.
Experimental studies, some going back over 80 years, clearly establish that ingesting fat creates insulin resistance within just 3 hours of eating it.
This 5-minutes video explains it, with links to the research summarized underneath:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/what-causes-insulin-resistance/
      This one is helpful too:
      nutritionfacts.org/video/diabetes-as-a-disease-of-fat-toxicity/
People can rapidly reverse their diabetes by eating diets that are very low in fat (~10% of calories, not 30%) and eating lots of high-fiber WHOLE food carbs.

If you feel better than you have for a long time then I wouldn't let anyones rethoric deter you from what you are doing, be it the Keto Camp or the Vegan. The one thing that is missing from all of the Vegan / Keto discussions is the part that your individual Heritage and migration of your ancestral Paternal and Maternal Haplogroups play. I come from a family laden with Autoimmune disfunction and all of them have improved dramatically on the Ketogenic Diet - one of my sisters continues to eat Vegan on medical advice and is now looking down the barrel of a liver transplant (having been very active her whole life, not drank or abused her body whatsoever - only 37). I reviewed our Haplogroups, discovered we have 20000 years of Heritage on the British Isles, primarily Ireland. What was available year 'round to eat here? Cold weather vegetables, small amount of edible root weeds (dandelion for example) certain perrenial plants and berry bushes, meat and fish. I don't think eating 2lbs of steak every day is the way to go by any stretch as historically none of ancestors would have turned up food that was readily available, be it plant of animal based. Just keep going with what makes you feel good, occassionally come out of ketosis for periods to improve your metabolic flexibility (think seasonal eating of fruit for example) and enjoy your life. The medical industry is turning on to value of nutrition and I suspect the standard advice will cange in the future regarding the role of Cholesterol relative to heart disease

I can only speak to the wonderful results my wife and I have encountered with a low-carb (20-50 grams fat per day, not ketogenic) manner of eating. My wife reversed pre-diabetes and related skin, arthritis, and breathing difficulties, and lost significant weight. My short eight-week low carb adventure resulted in weight loss, vascular improvements in my mild edema-prone left leg, and significant improvements in mental clarity. I have maintained my fat adaptation and take bike rides of 50-100 miles with only water and no carbs and that is starting in the morning fully fasted. All of these benefits require that you give up most of the junk you have been mistakenly calling food. Removal of junk food can be a deal breaker for some.

me personally, i never understood the point of all these weight loss diets that arent even sustainable long term. Eat a balanced whole food diet (animal products are optional) from all the food groups that you can tolerate and watch how many calories you consume. Weight loss is calories in, calories out. All these restrictive diets for weight loss make no sense and its just full of people who want a quick results without the hard work.

I am confused however about whether the ketogenic diet is the actual cause of the enlarged heart and heart attack examples that you mentioned. The resource materials that you posted state that the cardiomyopathy resulted because of selenium deficiency instead of what I would expect it to state. I would have expected it to state that the ketogenic diet caused the heart attacks. Can you please clarify?

Selenium deficiency could be more common in a diet that excludes many starches, which are common sources of selenium. A ketogenic diet doesn't make that inevitable, but it does make micronutrient deficiency a real risk.

These kinds of videos crack me up, I found out I had type 2 diabetes in January my A1C was 10 and my blood glucose was 240. They put me on medications that I stopped taking within weeks, there was no need for them after I found out about the ketogenic diet. I went low carb high fat and within a few days my blood sugar was in the normal range for a non diabetic, I had blood work done in April, My A1C dropped to 6 and next time it'll likely be in the low 5 to mid 4 range. My triglycerides dropped 50 points, my total cholesterol dropped 20 points but was already in the normal range, HDL and LDL stayed the same but those were normal anyway. I did this eating bacon, eggs, steaks, butter, heavy cream, full fat cheese and chicken with the skin on. I also eat a large serving of vegetables with butter at dinner and an avocado with lunch. Even right after a large meal my blood glucose never goes over 110 and after 2 hours it's always back in the 80's. I have also lost 80lbs in just over 3 months without doing any extra exercise, when your body has to use the fat for fuel it will burn off pretty quickly, when you load up on carbs your body can't get to the fat burning because the carbs will burn first. As far as people who are vegans you do what you like I have no problem with that, but PLEASE stop coming up with these BS videos to try to convert people, you are doing a disservice to other people's health.

@HM Fitness Once you get fat adapted, you'll know the answer. It gives a consistent energy level without crashing.
On a side note, keto is good for endurance and prolonged activities like running, and trailing but it doesn't shine as much for super strenuous activities that require fast energy use, such as mountain climbing and circuits.
Keto diet still requires carbs. 20 to 50g is already enough to fuel your body. You may increase your carb intakes depending on the activity at hand.

    • @vexcarius7100
      @vexcarius7100 Před 5 lety +5

@HM Fitness You don't need to tell me that I'm stupid. I'm just stating studies done regarding keto. You can do whatever you like. You can even go High carb low fat and it will still work.
Why are people nowadays get easily triggered? Like wtf is wrong with you? I'm not even stating that what you think is wrong. The length of your comment tells a lot of story about you.
I've done keto (done 3 months) and high carb diet (2 months) and now back to keto. Both works. It still depends on your preference. What I strongly believe is that you can't be high fat and high carb the same time because of health and high insulin issues.
Keto works. That's a fact. I've reversed my hypertension, and blood sugar level. I even lost 48 lbs in just 3 1/2 months coupled with HIIT sessions. I also do half marathons, Sundays once every 2 weeks.
The first month of keto will suck. As you will feel so bad and a bit dizzy, I did not finish my runs during that month as it felt so bad. But the 2nd month is amazing. It felt normal and I can do my routines well like I used to. I shifted to High carb after some months because a friend told me to try it and it was also nice, but I went to back to keto after a couple of months because I missed eating meat.
It will depend on your body still. Just listen to it.

Dark circles around the eyes are a sign of lack of infraorbital support, caused, at the same time, by a non-projecting maxilla. He clearly has this, as evidenced by the long face, aka midface ratio. On top of that, acanthosis nigricans doesn't show on the eyes alone.

Sorry Mic but I have to give you a thumbs down on this one. I went keto on Nov 6th and lost 20lbs in the first month, I have before and after pics to prove it, never once restricted or even counted calories. While I am not on strict (20gr of carbs or less) keto at the moment since I am trying to put on more muscle mass (you are right about that point) I still eat high fat and I have never felt better.
Yes I did have one adverse reaction, my daily vitamin D3 would give me nausea for some unknown reason, easy fix, got my D3 from the sun.
Funny that you mention adverse effects because a strict vegan diet made me very ill, like not even functional for a whole month ill, yet on keto I was hitting the gym after 12hr days at work, so much for your argument there. Not calling you a liar, just saying that everyone is wired a little differently and I responded VERY well to keto, looking to try vegan keto for next time I cut.

Going keto took all that bloat off of me and then went to work on underlying fat so fast that I had people ask me if I was on meth LOL By December 16th I was down 25lbs and I shifted gears to my muscle growth program which involves some carbs pre and post workouts to control cortisol levels, I have been very successful with that, hit a 26.3 FFMI (Fat free mass index) which according to some (Vegan Gains) is not even possible for a person not using steroids, oh how I love proving internet myths wrong.

Enigma, exactly. The truth is out. Human beings are made to eat fat and protein and minimal carbohydrate. We store 5 grams of glucose in the blood and only 2000 calories of glycogen in the muscle. We also cannot store proteins. If human beings were not mean to eat fat and burn fat, we would not store 50000 calories of fat in the average person. Vegan Mick has not done enough reading to know he is wrong.

I agree, Avocados, nuts, greens, ground flax, vegetables, blackberries, strawberries and plenty of other whole foods. Also, when eating a higher fat diet, fat assists with regularity. What the vegans cannot grasp is that not all calories are absorbed. When I was vegan, I was eating a lot of fat. Thank you so much for your videos about Keto. I am a fellow vegan who was recently put on a ketogenic diet by my doctor for weight loss purposes. I have been vegan for 7 years and vegetarian for 13 years. For most of my life, I was a healthy weight until I gained about 70 pounds in less than a year after I was prescribed an atypical antipsychotic to help with insomnia. For me, personally, it was one of the worst experiences of my life. However, coming in a close second to that would be my 5 day flirtation with a vegan ketogenic diet. I found it was virtually impossible to get a reasonable caloric intake and could not manage to eat even 1000 calories per day for those 5 days. I was shocked by how few vegetables I was actually able to eat...and I am talking about all above ground vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli. The fact is that the only vegan “foods” that are carb-free are oil, margarine and hard liquor. So unless I started doing shots of vegetable oil (and I didn’t...gross) it became very difficult to eat a non-starvation diet. Nonetheless, the first two days were fine because I had my glycogen stores, presumably. But after those were gone...it wasn’t pretty. I started getting daily migraines, which I expected from when I had restricted carbs before (but not to the same extent). I had insane constipation... the likes of which I had never experienced, but I expected that because the doctor had warned me. What I didn’t expect were the intense panic attacks I experienced, which made me feel like I was drowning. I have had panic attacks before, but these were entirely different and truly terrifying. On the fifth day, I had the mother of all panic attacks and I said to myself, “How can something that makes you feel this terrible be good for you?” And I quit Keto that very evening and began doing my own research about healthy eating. I am now aiming to cut out most sugar and refined carbohydrates, and focus on carb-containing foods low on the glycemic index. Hopefully my doctor understands, but the truth is I just couldn’t live that way.
