- While accompanying the Gardiners (Penelope Wilton & Peter Wight) on their road trip through the Peak District, Elizabeth (Kiera Knightley) takes them on a tour of Darcy's (Matthew MacFayden) estate at Pemberley. Unaware that he is still in town and staying at the estate, Elizabeth has an awkward run-in with Darcy that she wasn't expecting.
FILM SYNOPSIS:
One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFayden), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish" (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times).

Mr. Darcy, in my opinion, gets better looking as the movie progresses, as he falls more in love with Elizabeth every time he sees her. Matthew MacFayden conveys so much with his eyes. Perfect movie.
When we first see him, hes all buttoned up and formal and stuffy. Almost as if he dipped his clothes in startch. As he falls in love, his clothes soften, loosen, go from dark blacks to navys and blues. The changes in his wardrobe that reflect his growing love for Elizabeth was well done
I read in a documentary that his evolution and facial features change in tandem with his wardrobe. His shirts and coat colors become softer and are opened to bear his chest (and heart). 😉
I’ve just noticed it.
Oh, you spoke my mind...I feel Darcy gets better looking because his character evolves through the course of the film and moment by moment I fell for Darcy and he became irresistible.
@@shaniadirstein3650 Great, another excuse for me to go back and watch again. I hadn't noticed the color changes, as I have focused on his face. Good catch!
@@Alusnovalotus I have to go back and watch now for the wardrobe changes! His face changes so much, I hadn't noticed the clothing. Thanks for tip.
When she apologizes for intruding, the way he shakes his head, as if it breaks his heart to hear her say that. Love it.
Ugh yes 😭
yes.
I know it’s so heartbreaking
Huh, I know how she feels. Told that the house was open so she entered then found out her timing was all wrong! Hurried to make herself scarce and give Darcy time to find his way, while she languidly walks away down the verdant path to find hers. Really is between a rock and a hard place with these two. I truly believe that the road is paved with the best of intentions. Hope they both find what they’re looking for.
Yessss 🥲😍🥰
Mr. Darcy's enthusiastic "YES!" right after Lizzie tells him she likes walking is beyond adorable, it shows he's been paying attention to the things she likes and was happy to hear her confirm it
Also the scene they learned that she walked to see her sick sister is when he fell in love with her as I remember
@@basakbalc5169 ohhhhhhh! I thought he meant to walk her but she assumed he meant by carriage and didn’t think he’d walk such a long distance
@@wiggilytaco7570 that's exactly what it was
He’s say “Yes I know” is pleased he knows her so well.
I think he wanted to walk with her but that would make her so uncomfortable, that’s why she smile and hurriedly said, Goodbye Mr. Darcy! She already felt so nervous and awkward because he caught her in his house peaking through a small opening in the door. I wanted her to keep running when he called her name. I wouldn’t want to stop, too embarrassing!😳🫣🫨😬😵💫🥴 I thought she was very brave to go to his house the following day when he invited her to meet his sister by talking to her uncle and aunt. By this time she loved him and felt very nervous around him, but she did want to see him again and meet his sister. So cute! I love it, too much!🥰
I'll never get over Matthew Macfadyen's Mr. Darcy
Colin Firth’s is iconic as it should be, but Macfayden’s is the most✨ accurate✨
Oh yes, me too.
@@ginevragaitor9319 I don’t know if it’s my age, I was too young to watch the Colin Firth version on tv, or because the actors are much older than the characters they are supposed to be so it looks less realistic to me, but the couple interactions in the 1995 version sometimes make me cringe. Especially the proposal at the end!
@@Mimi-si6qk the ‘95 proposal was the worst part for me! Seems rushed
No one will 🥰
“Let’s go to his house” they said
“He won’t be there anyway, these great men are never at home” they said…. And in walks Darcy 🤦🏻♀️
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Well, they were deeply wrong 🤣😂😂😂
Haha :)))
She’s supposed to be so proud, so I kind of prefer how she makes it a point to ensure he wouldn’t be home herself before agreeing to visit Pemberly in the book - yet the way she gets caught intruding here was a great change. Just one of the many great choices Wright and the filmmakers made in adapting it.
Hhhaaa

Or “Mr. Wickham who? What was I thinking 🥴”
Yeah Mrs Bennett probably would have had a heart attack if she knew that Elizabeth turned down Darcy at first
The part where she was truly admiring his sculpture was incredible.
The longing in her eyes...
I have seen that veiled statue in real life as a young girl, and was utterly amazed by it. That part was very realistic.
the very picture of devotion
Yeah, by then she was hopelessly in love with him 🥰
It s very symbolic as she first saw him as cold and cruel but now she is seeing inside the sclupture how soft and loving he really is
That "may I see you back to the village" was so endearing. It was like now that he saw her, he wants to spend more time with her because he missed her
He was also a little protective (caring)which l LOVE
Omg...Yes!!!
how did she say no
to that beautiful offer ???
MacFadyen is the best Darcy ever. He played his shyness/sweetness perceived as pride to perfection.
To me it’s a tie between him and Colin Firth (1995). Perfect in a different way.
Reserved rather than shy. Kindness rather than sweetness.
@@JGalegriaAgree!
i think seeing Elizabeth in his home really hit something in Darcy, like he wants her to be there always, it could be her home if she wanted it to be. you can see it in the desperate little head shake he does when she apologizes for being there. he wants her there so badly and it make his heart ache when she is but she wants to leave.

This truly is so inexplicable romantic. The way they look at each other, admiring and longing but not being able to speak with words of their true feelings. Elizabeth is confused and tries to flee from it while Darcy is finally, in his awkward way, making an effort of looking out for her. His eyes says everything and the perfect example of the female gaze is the picture in the end of his hand, remembering how it felt to touch hers.
Yes you say it perfectly!
I LOVE the female gaze. Sensual and rich instead of sexy and cheap.
And Lizzy usually have so much to say, all of the sudden don't have much to say LOL
Thank you, no need to tell us what we all saw.
There aren't many movies like this.
Since we’re pointing out things we love about this scene, I think it says a lot of how fondly the woman working at the house speaks of him and his sister. Even in such a small interaction you can hear the warmth in her voice when she mentions Mr. Darcy and Georgiana and I’ve always thought that said a lot about the type of person he is and his character
In the book, the way his housekeeper speaks so fondly about him is actually one of the cementing factors that makes Lizzie realize she had interpreted him wrongly and what ultimately causes her opinion about Mr Darcy to change to a more admirable one!
Yes! Lizzie is lovestruck by this intimate knoedge of his kind nature
@@donaldstanfield8862*knowledge
Given how house staff in those days could be witnesses in court for or against their masters, given how much they would see while doing their job … it is of note that his housekeeper spoke well of him. Says that his good guy quotient ought to go up.
everything about this movie makes me feel warm and fuzzy I can’t explain how much I love it

I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched this film. I practically have it memorized. And yet as soon as I come across it I have to watch the entire film. The only other film I love as much - if not more - is Emma Thompson’s Sense & Sensibility.
Male chauvinist that I am, I almost never like women novelists, but I dislike novels in general. Jane Austin, however, is one of my great pleasures. Clarity and wit. As for these movies, I find it amazing that there is a market for them.

He started the movie as a rock, finished as melting butter. He is so handsome, classy, beautiful, cute, energetic, sweet, charming.....etc.
The piece that Georgiana plays here, is the same one from the beginning of the film when Elizabeth is reading a book while taking a stroll, and enters her house; foreshadowing that this too, will eventually be home for her. 🥺🥺❤️❤️
Oh my god that’s amazing I never noticed that
It is also the peice that lizzie played at lady catherine’s house. It is the original soundtrack of the film, dawn. Many of the other songs in the film are modelled after it.
@@rosemaryflame6863*piece
Actually, Lizzy approached the place where the music came from when she arrived, she smiles a little because Georgina was playing the same piece on the piano that she played at Catherine's house. In other words, it means that Darcy hummed what Lizzy touched. Darcy memorized what his beloved had touched and that means that he gave him all the attention in the world in addition to the fact that he had already talked to his sister about his beloved Lizzy
@@perlabarrerac 🤣
“By heavens, Lizzie. What a snob you are. Rejecting to poor Mr. Darcy because of his wealth. The poor man can’t help it.”

Because he is so rich!
Very satirical indeed!

It’s just so inconsiderate of him to return to his own home like that, ruined the trip for her tbh.

LMAO!
Ikr. The audacity!!
How dare you, Mr. Darcy!
The way Mr. Darcy reply right away to Lizzie even when she just finished her sentences in this conversation really shows the longing that Mr. Darcy felt until he finally could speak to Lizzie again. Like he could pour his heart anytime and tell her he loved her, but still too many walls between them. Loved every scene in this movie where they interact to each other. Truly masterpiece
You can feel Mr. Darcy’s kindness to people when he allowed his house to be open publicly where anyone can visit it and see its magnificence
Tbh I thought of it differently as in his pride, Mr. Darcy opened it to flaunt his extravagant wealth
It was usual for the country houses to accept visitors if they were respectable and well dressed. The housekeeper would show them around in exchange for a tip of about 5 shillings. They certainly weren't open to all as they are today
The fact that he runs after her just sealed the romantic scene in my head😊
I love listening to have skip the steps. She takes them all he skips most.
Their body language is the best thing about their acting. Manners, eyes, voices. I love these period movies cause you can see how the actors become the characters. But honestly, i've never seen someone that did as good as these two, everything about it is so ridiculously good, i travel to another world/time just watching their chemistry.
The line of this scene to me is Lizzy saying "I thought you were in London!"
Just perfectly delivered, the right blend of embarrassment, irritation, and hint of friendly intimacy.

A lot of readers don’t like this version. But I love it for everything that it is!
I’m also one of those readers who didn’t like this version only for one reason.I didn’t liked this actor playing Darcy. For me he was not fit for the role. Besides I’ve accepted every little changes director made in the movie. Even Kiara is the best ever Lizi I have ever seen.
@@nusratfattah1000 Just the way he looks at her with such guarded longing after he totally screwed up with her with his first proposal sells me on MacFayden as Darcy. A portrayal that's less concerned with what Austen wrote as how people relate to each other back then and added more humanity of how people were when not being observed.
I don’t understand people who hate on this version.
The 1995 version is a long form tv adaptation faithful to the text, this is a romanticised film version that has to distill the essence of the novel. They are supposed to be different.
It’s almost like those people that hate this movie aren’t happy with anything less than the exact same faithful reproduction of the text. That would have been so dull!
As a reader I love this version, but I don't mind changes to fit the format. I also love the two leads.
@@nusratfattah1000 I'm neutral toward the actor but you'd have to be blind to not see how brilliant his portrayal of Darcy was. Was it completely faithful to the books? Maybe not. But his performance was without flaws, he emotes so much with his face and eyes in this movie.

I love the relationship between Lizzie and the Gardiners. You can tell they’re like second parents to her
If you’ve ever adored someone with no certainty as to what their feelings for you may be at that precise moment (or maybe even your own towards them), then you know why this scene arises such palpable emotions
Yeah. Because he’s still uncertain of her feelings. He’s still not sure if her perception of him already changed. So much uncertainty but he loves her. So much longing. Perfect acting.
I stopped counting how many times I have watched this movie. It has everything: beautiful scenery, costumes, good acting and relaxing atmosphere in general. Good escape from cruel reality.

This scene of her standing on the edge of the cliff is iconic. Just gorgeous, and one of my favorites.
Yep.. the windows wallpaper
I never really wanted to watch this movie. But for some reason, nothing could be found to interest me one evening. So I turned it on. IT has truly become my favorite film ever. I love, love, I love it. It's soothing and has a way of showing humanity. As I watch it in the evening now before bed, it comforts me and I fall asleep. Not because I am bored but the film makes me feel warm, loved and makes me feel comforted.
Everyone’s talking about how he fell in love with her, but I love how she fell in love with him overtime. The way she slowly becomes infatuated with his features, she becomes more shy around him, smiles more at him, the tiny hint of jealousy she feels when she sees his sister hugging him (not knowing who she is), just a beautiful story of two people falling for each other.
I am sure she figured out it was Georgiana, she was simply surprised to see him and to witness the exhibition of warmth and love towards his sister.
I cannot explain how much comfort this movie brings me.
First time I saw this scene in the cinema was just plain painful. He's trying to hang out with her but she's too embarassed. Come on Lizzie, Darcy is happy to see you :)
Yes, but having been in a part of the house uninvited was a huge breach of propriety, and to have been caught by him, of all people, who couldn’t even propose to her without sneering about her family’s lack of propriety, it’s no wonder she was too mortified to see that he was anything but bothered.
I mean...I'd be embarrassed too, I don't want to come across as a stalker.
Knightley is just so good in this role, imo.
Every scene is like a painting in this film. So beautiful

That little laugh Elizabeth gives as she gets out of the carriage. It was such a succinct way of saying, "Oh, fiddlesticks. This is what I rejected? I love it." And it forces the viewer to realize that it's not the property that she regrets turning down.

You could see that love, reluctance & longing in Darcy’s eyes as he just wanted so much again to express his undying love for her. Elizabeth was so awkward & hesitant 😁 I do wish they showed more scenes of him staring at her as in the book, but nevertheless an epic romance.
I remember the first time I saw Pemberley, I thought "Is Mr Darcy living in a museum?" 😱

So I wondered about that. Do you have to call ahead or somehow make sure that the house was open for visitors? Also how would the housekeeper determine who's to be allowed? Elizabeth's uncle was in the trades in London, which the landed gentry looked down upon. But since they're wealthy enough to take a vacation in the country, would that make them 'suitable' enough?
@@VCT3333 Some houses had set days that they were open, sometimes the garden was. Often the Inn would know or you could always send an errand boy to check. More often then not the gardens were open so you would check to visit the gardens (you would first stop at the side servants entrance for a visit) and find out that the house was open that day as well. The housekeepers job was to eyeball visitors and it would be left to their discretion. It wasn't about money on who was suitable, but rather how they handled themselves.

Nah they made Lizzy look dumpy half the time, they made Charlotte downright ugly with greasy hair, and they completely ruimed the only actual time she and Darcy enjoyed each other's company (at Rosings).
The scene where she is looking at the statue of the veiled woman just took on a larger significance related to Elizabeth's conflicting feelings and needing to keep them concealed from others.
Omg I never realised despite watching this movie 2000 times, thank you
I absolutely love it when the scenes between Eliza and Darcy ends with an emphasis on either Darcy clenching his hands or stretching it or letting it loose. It portrays the resilience cinema makers have envisaged through this classic romance novel. ✨

One of the most beautiful renditions of the famous book. Its brevity as a movie meant that a lot of the story had to be pared away, but nothing was lost in this superbly directed abbreviation. I love, love, love this version of Pride and Prejudice, however I wish it was as long and in depth as the BBC mini-series with Colin Firth. I could easily sit through 5 hours of this.
Definitely ❤
This movie really indulged in the romance of the regency era. It feels so rich even now, after nearly 20 years since it was made.
It was awkward AF because in their last interaction, he confessed his feelings for her and not only did she NOT kindly turn him down, she lambasted him (in her prejudice) because she heard and believed he was of another character. Only to learn his true character after and apparently got caught visiting his home after scorching him with her as harsh as possible rejection.
I laughed out loud for like 30 seconds when I read this because OMG YEAAAH SHE DID REJECT HIM THE LAST TIME THEY MET LMAO
It's his vulnerability over time that gets to me, he makes you fall for him. Love him ❤️ ❤️
LOVE this movie. For so many reasons. Knightley/Macfadyen are perfect!
My question is how did he catch up to her so quickly and the walk to get to her melts everything in me.
It's his house, he probably knew secret passageway for a shortcut lol
It's like he was jumping down several steps at a time to catch up with her.
The song at the beginning is “Lizzie on top of the world” and that’s what I walked down the aisle to when I got married almost 14 years ago. ♥️
as a former near peak district resident, that gorgeous cliff shot almost brings me to tears everytime
My fav scene is when she closes her eyes and the trees shadow her vision. It's so so wonderful and relatable. Joe Wright has a beautiful mind. Gorgeous❤❤
This movie is perfection in every way: setting, cast, music and the beautiful language used in each dialog...superb!
The book is amazing and the movie follows it quite a bit. Watched the movie before reading the book and the actors gave a great visual representation of the Characters. Great help for someone who is dyslexic and needs a visual help when reading.
Kiera Knightley is also dyslexic! Idk if you already knew that but it's so cool that she got to play Elizabeth
@@danielasanchez4674 actually I didn't know that but that makes her an amazing choice.
i’m not dyslexic but i do have adhd, austen has a very complicated way of writing especially for me because i’m not a native english speaker, this movie was so so helpful to get a hang of the story
This movie follows the dialogue, but this an interpretation of that dialogue, for the most part, in different settings. The 1995 TV episodes more closely follows the book.
May we take a moment to acknowledge Dario Marianelli? Score, and the individual songs, splendid.
I love this film so much. courtship between men and women should always be like this with grace
The way he says "YES...yes... I know" it's si cute
The small gestures he makes with his head add so much more to his emotions, it’s so sweet when she says she loves walking and he says I know 😊
