- Whether you're gearing up for the winter sale, or looking back to find great games otherwise, there were a bunch of fantastic strategy, tactics, sim, and management games released in 2023, from Indie and AAA devs alike. It's very easy to miss out on some of the great gems from a year packed with so many great gems, so in today's video, we take a look at some of the games that released in 2023 that I personally enjoyed, and that I feel did not get enough attention (or have changed greatly since they first got attention). I hope this helps you find something you missed in 2023 - as usual, we take a look at strategy games, tactics games, simulation games, and management games primarily.

EDIT: View my TOP 5 of 2023 - czcams.com/video/LA8ot6WiH9c/video.html !
2023 was a packed year! Here are some excellent gems that may have slipped under your radar (or that you may have otherwise set aside for later). I'll share my top 5 of the year soon, but in the meantime, these are well worth checking out. Don't forget to add any you like to your wishlist so you get notifications when they go on sale (if you'd rather wait) - the Steam Winter Sale is right around the corner, after all!
Check out Urbek, it's a Voxel City builder with a couple of twists. There is no money aspect, everything is paid for by way of resources which need to be managed like a supply and demand puzzle. Also, the building you build will always be level 1 of its type. It will upgrade/downgrade/change depending on what's around it. Houses close to food, education and leisure can upgrade several times giving you more population and more skilled workers. If they are close to pollution they become shanty towns with less happiness and a chance for Rebel houses. You could have 2k worth of food in reserve, build a hospital and a bank and hundreds of homes upgrade several stories and all of a sudden you have no food left. It's good fun and time passes in an instant.
Great video as always!!
If you like city builders, you must try Against the Storm. It is a must play title that every city builder lover shouldn’t miss.
so true , one of the best games ever and the devs are awesome
Hell yeah so frickin good
agree. i started ats and anno complete and both are crazy good and very different.
Phantom Brigade definitely had some good moments. Combat is probably it's strongest point and while there's occasional buggy moments, overall I have to say I had a positive experience with the game.
Also, the Last Spell has come so far from when it came out in EA. It's pretty damn amazing watching how much it's changed!
This year had so many good games in my favourite genres, I could probably spend the next 2 years just catching up.
Great video as always!!
Saved the best for last, The Last Spell is an incredible game, and the music still makes my heart race.
one of my favorites lasr year
As always great compilation!
Just picked up the Wartales expansion and I too was pleasantly surprised with JA3
yeah i was highly skeptical but it was giga fun. i mean it is hemimont who are around since 25 yrs, did caesar early and survive mars recently. i was very skeptical going in tho but it super delivered.
Think I'm going to get Jagged Alliance 3, looks pretty good and it's on sale
Age of Wonders 4 has been great and only improving with expansions
One of my fave games this year.
It could be better
Well you're right about one thing, that I missed Cities 2. And I intend to miss it.
Your videos are great!
Thanks for the video
Honestly surprised Against the Storm isn't here. Haven't seen much fanfare about it around and that game is genuinely GOOD with great gameplay and a unique kind of charm to it.
Spoilers - I have a "top 5 of the year" video still to come ;)
Literally clicked just to see if its on the list lol. So frickin good
Just gonna drop this link here - czcams.com/video/LA8ot6WiH9c/video.html
Great video. Saw a few games I missed
You're one of the best out there, PE!
Happy Hollidays! And thanks for another of
Great content
The Last Spell is awesome. Can't wait to try some of the other games featured here if I can ever afford a better computer. Sigh.
Great video recommendation.
Some interesting ones on here I hadn't seen!
Park Beyond reminds me of Thrillville in a way with the crazy ride pieces that launch people in the air or smash through walls n' such. Anyone remember that game?
The last spell is fantastic!
Great video
Let's School is another game I would add to your list. A truly addictive game and so well made, even in early access.
Did Park Beyond add more rollercoasters? The fact it only had 3 types was what mostly drove me and many other away.
The flat rides are incredible, of course, but the coasters are the heart of the park games.
yes, wooden coasters and monorails were added just last week in a free update. Also, more coaster modules and a bunch of other stuff were added in previous updates
Thank you!
Fantastic list, clearly by someone who enjoys and knows the genre
Phantom Brigade devs didn't bother making a story for the game they pretty much abandoned it and industries of titan...
There is a patch incoming.
I did not missed Last Train home.... an amazing game. I highly recommend it.
Are you planing to do a lets play of rogue trader?
First of all, what a great video on this topic! Great presentation and above all great list, in contrast to almost allll other youtubers who name the same games, bad games, games that don't fit the genre of the list, games that everyone knows already etc.
Jagged Alliance 3 is nice. It really scratches the XCOM itch I had for a while, but it gets stale/boring pretty quick I have to say :(
When you have a great squad with great weapons and snipers you kind of rape every enemy squad and it feels too boring.
For Wartales I can say the same but to an more extreme point, it feels like a mobile version of M&B Bannerlord. Very little game, gets boring suuuper fast (10-25 hours).
100% would recommend Last Train Home
Nice, historical game.
Dwarf Fortress! Fun little sim , once you get the hang of it.
"Little" 😂
😂
WarTales is Brilliant!
I do not feel like Xenonauts 2 should be on this list:
I'm one of the original backers and I feel disappointed by what was delivered. Feels like a reskin of original, small pieces here and there are just a little bit better but that is it. And the game is still unfinished. I expected a new game, not just a remaster of the first one.
Xenonauts 2 itself is not a bad game, but taking into account the first Xenonauts, the time and the money... It should be something much better.
Last train home would be great if set in snowpiercer world or any other fictional world...
you recommend park beyond over planet coaster? only played parkitekt so far.
that was actually all fantastic suggestions, thanks partyelite !
Yeah...wouldn't put Xenonauts 2 on the list if you played X1 before. Goldhawk played it wayyyy to safe given the amount of time X2 has been in development.
I was genuinely disappointed. 5 years and all we got was reskin.
Infraspace!
Considering how long Phantom Brigade has been out, feels like the devs have taken a long time to address the concerns.
If they've literally "just announced" changes, what have they been doing in the meantime?
They had to lay off as much as half their staff shortly after the game released, unfortunately. So to commit to those changes for the relatively small number of players is a heavy business decision.
@@PartyElite I was unaware of that. Completely changes the perspective of it now, appreciate you taking the time to reply.
I've really wanted to pick it up but just kept finding reasons not to.
Perhaps now is the time with the small discount on steam
@@damo_c yep totally understandable - with so many layoffs in the industry this year, it's been hard to keep a track of it all. Always happy to reply and provide insight where I can - if you do pick it up, I hope you enjoy it!
@@PartyElite I've just this second bought it on Steam. Reading through the patch notes and the upcoming plans. Seems like they're putting the work in.
Just need to find time to play all the amazing games this year!
yes, i missed the greatest blockbusters -.-
Day 5 of asking for a new planet zoo playthrough
Most disagree with your judgement of park beyond, based on the reviews.
damn how could i have missed last train home
I only own th least spell of the game here which I suck at.
how is dotage not here
I am quite a bit confused how one can miss a game in 2023, when it is still in early access in late december 2023. I would consider these games to be going to be released in 2024. So how can I miss them in 2023?
0/10 Missed
2/10 Great games
I tried to play Jagged Alliance 2 recently and dang, that game aged poorly on a technical level. I hope JA3 will get as much love from modders.
I just play it in pure ignorance and enjoy it for what it is. I’m not going to get worked up by someone else’s politics
Citites Skylines 2 shouldn't be on this list... maybe next year when they fixed their broken alpha game.
Great video, could be funny tho, tell more jokes.
Did yo get payed for the CS 2 Part? It felt like you were defending the game and almost feels like an add. And Park Beyond is just bad.
5:12 this is just simply a lie. The game didnt deliver at all on release and continues to be stuck on mixed reviews on steam for example. The game released with really bad perfomance and lots of bugs and glitches.
To be honest, none of these games interest me.. It's absolutely not my taste.. For those who want more mature, immersive, realistic games:
- Excellent new dlc for Crusader Kings 3 introducing the Iranian, Abassid Intermezzo with all historical context and new struggle feature
- Excellent new Liberation DLC for Gates of hell, (most realistic real time WW2 comprehensive tactical strategy game ever made)
- Decent new DLC released for Hearts of Iron 4 (most realistic, immersive WW2 grand strategy game that exists. Black Ice mod, makes it even far more realistic)
- Victoria 3, new update that completed revamped the military and war aspect, absolutely worth playing if you are into 1870 to infinite grand strategy games
- Kenshi a massive survival game, where you can be whoever you want, the world lives and you are nothing.. less than nothing.. The world moves on with or without you. But if you put your heart and mind into it, you can become a mighty leader, merc, trader, king, military commander, roge, assassin, psycho path, sociopath, tyrant, drug dealer, creat a massive drug empire ranging from production to processing to selling, construct from scratch an outpost, turn it into whatever you want, hire people, turn them into mercs, guards, soldiers..etc Possibilities are endless (highly recommended if you never tried it)
Games to look out for:
- Manor Lord, Medieval real time strategy, immersive, realsitic, looks very impressive
I can't imagine anyone missing any of these titles.
And to call Cities Skylines 2 a "great game" is pretty big stretch. It's so broken, it's basically just pieces.
I missed several of them, and even some of the ones I had heard of I hadn't seen in this much detail, so the video was useful for me.
xenonaughts 2 a great game? nice joke
Last Train Home has interesting mechanics and can be fun, but unfortunately too much right wing propaganda garbage for me. Unfortunate that everything has to be so political for those with conservative leanings.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Cope more tankie
It's based on true story. Read it and learn history!
Ha ha ha 😂 Gold
Yeah, but nobody really cares about your opinion anyway
last train home is a pure rightwing nationalistic propaganda, I wouldn't recommend it, but gameplay is okay.
That sounds awesome! Thanks for letting me know. I have to let all my buddies know.
I wasn't gonna play it but now I will. Thanks!
Sounds perfect to me
How so?
Yikes. How so?
