  • Dorothy Alberta Ghost Town Walking Tour | Inside All the Buildings | Walking Tour
Dorothy Alberta is a ghost town that is just about 30 minutes from Drumheller along the Red Deer River Valley. This area is often overlooked by tourists, but is one of the most photographed places in Alberta because of the two iconic historical churches. But Dorothy is much more than that. Let’s explore all the buildings here and tour the interiors as well.Dorothy was a hamlet of about 100 residents in its prime. Today, there are less than 8 people living in the area. This small community sprang up around a post office ran by Percy McBeath - and he wanted the town named after him - Percyville. But the name was officially Dorothy - named after the daughter of a local rancher Jack Wilson who settled her in 1900.Dorothy’s heydays were in the 1920s when a rail line came right through town. Three gran elevators sprang up - of which one remains today. A general store, a pool hall, butcher shop, a telephone room, a school house, 32 houses and two churches sprang up between 1908 and 1937.When coal started to phase out, so did Dorothy and today we see the remains of what was. Right now we are driving East from Drumheller on hwy 570. We went past the exit to Wayne and past the Atlas Coal Mine. When the valley opens slightly you will see a bridge on your right, a grain elevator on the left and a tiny sign that says Dorothy. Take the exit before the town. The road here is gravel but is well suited for any automobile. There is a park here for children, rest area pic nic tables and a washroom. This little rest area is perfect, but if you would like to stay longer there is a Bed and Breakfast as well as a campground nearby. Remember if you visit to be very considerate of the people that still live here. Respect their privacy and do not trespass. Also respect all the buildings and artifacts. This community is allowing us to enjoy history first hand - and at no cost.We will be wondering about town, and going inside every building so enjoy this unique area with us. Thank you. Another location to pin on my photo tour map for next summer. A week became two weeks. Two weeks is looking more like a month. The physical and cultural geography is very different to Yukon. I'm absolutely fascinated with the potential of southern Alberta.

I recall that at one time, Dorothy used to get letters from overseas asking in there were lonely cowboys who would like a wife or girlfriend. I wonder if this is still happening or if the letters have stopped coming and when the last letter came.

This was back in the early 50s. A news article was published in a Toronto newspaper about the lonely cowboys in Dinosaur Valley. A NY magazine picked up the article and republished and yes, the post office was flooded. Only one eligible bachelor got to meet one of the women, as she was flown in by the magazine. As it turns out the couple didn't marry.

Correction: The Store closed in 1979. The Post Office Closed in the 1960s and was relocated to the store for some time.

Ghostbusters Afterlife has a snippet of Dorothy and the grain elevator. A movie called Tin Star was also filmed in Dorothy.

Useless trivia : The church at 9:50 and some of the other surrounding buildings in Dorothy were backdrops in Tom Cochrane's music video "Life is a Highway"

Are you originally from Alberta? Your accent sounds from elsewhere in Canada

I have lived all across Canada and some parts in the US. I was born in BC, lived in Alberta from 77-82 and have been here since 2006.
