The Holland 2 - 2 draw with Northern Ireland I remember listening to the radio that night as all matches in those times were covered on radio. I was listening to an England match and it kept reporting from Holland. I recall I couldn’t believe that Northern Ireland had got a great draw and they came close to winning it.

It was never easier to become world champion than in Argentina. No real top team! Also Holland played a very weak group Phase! Why did Cruijff resist to play?
@@markbrandis5684 He didn't want to leave his family after an armed kidnap attempt on his family in Barcelona in 1977. He said he couldn't be 100% focussed on Oranje if he was away from his family. He also didn't want to give positive publicity to the military regime in charge of Argentina at that time.

They would've won it even without Cruyff and Van Hanegem if Rensenbrink's last-minute hit against the post had been an inch to the right.
Ruud Geels scored so many goals, it's a pity he wasn't selected for the Mundial. Another problem that team had was the uncertainty for the goalkeeper. Their best player, Van Beveren, was hated by Cruyff. And without a solid GK, troubles came on crucial matches.

Jan van Beveren was by far Holland's best keeper for a decade, but as you said, Ajax had far too much say in who got selected for Oranje. I'm confident Holland would have won the 1974 world cup if van Beveren had played. Jongbloed was a very average keeper at best. Cruyff was the important absentee in 1978, along with van Hanegem and van Beveren, otherwise they would likely have won in 1978.
@@gustaaf1892That would be true if it had been the Cruyff of six years before. With Cruyff 1978 vintage he would have dropped back into midfield, where his skill would have entertained and made Holland LOOK better but what they needed was somebody in the middle snapping up goals. They struggled at times because they played with 3 wingers Rep, Rene van der Kerkhof and Rensenbrink. Given a real centre-forward like Ruud Geels, Holland would have been transformed but he declined to go to Argentina apparently because of political reasons.

Al margen de las ausencias de CRUYFF y Van Haneguem,Q hacen recordar el caso de Gullit para 1994, pero si somos realistas, Holanda estubo a centímetros de ser campeón sin los dos, y en 1994 llegaron más lejos que en el 90 con Gullit y Van Basten.Ahora bien las ausencias de Van Beveren por mucho el mejor arquero de Holanda en esa época,(un caso muy similar al de mi país El Salvador para las eliminatorias del 86/90/94 y 98 nuestra mejor arquero siempre fue medido con una vara diferente a los demás y eso promocionó a otros arqueros favoritos de los federativos,a tal grado q incluso no fue tomado en cuenta para las de 1994.),otra ausencia fue Van ser Kjuilin, desconozco la razón,Geels, Peters,
En 1990, Michels impidió que Cruijff se convirtiera en entrenador. Miedo de que Holanda se convirtiera en campeón. Todo el equipo quería a Cruijff. El éxito de 1988 hizo que Holanda estuviera desmotivada para la copa de 1990, con el entrenador Beenhakker al que nadie quería.

Johan Cruijff had been kidknapped a year prior to the tournament (with a gun to his face) and stayed home because he did not feel safe enough, and thought it would ruin his focus on the game.
