Doody has explained multiple times that Phil's enjoyment of games is solely dependent on how much money he receives. When he gets a lot, he enjoys the game. When he doesn't get a lot, he does not enjoy the game.
It's sad that his mood and enjoyment of games directly pertains to how much money he can get from his audience.
