      Great song.
The story is about the virtues of sacrifice. It's almost a biblical them.
I recall an old WWII movie. Think Robert Mitchum was lead actor. At the end the a Japanese pilot was about to bomb the shit out of Mitchum's young family but suddenly a Catholic priest fires up the truck on a suicide run. The Japanese gunner destroys the priest and his truck then flies off. Thinking that his work is done.
And with the enemy gone Mitchum takes his family to safety.

But you fo realize the folks that sing about truck drivers never drove a truck, right? Honestly I don't think too much of drivers today. I started driving in '86 and in the seventies learned how to twin stick in a bad ass Freight shaker that you literally had to climb into the sleeper. Still know how to twin stick and climbed doghouse into a sleeper. Walking were a luxury and I hate condo's. And... I will cut my own through before I would ever drive an automatic. I own many times over a 78 K100 big bunk flat top with a now 18 speed tranny. Can't put a 6×4 Spicer in in a cabover. Not enough room. But if it had a hood I would damn sure have a hole cut out. My truck originally had a 365 Kitty Cat in front of a 15 speed. Still got the deep reduction switch for looks though on the dash. The only difference is I can split the bottom and top ends instead of just the top. So hard to keep the truck original now. The steering wheel is a hard plastic Beige thee spoke. That is even special order. Even the high low switch has to be special ordered. Always park where the lot lizards are on "partyrow" 'cause all the curb sniffer drivers can't walk that far. Right?
Before anyone ever goes out and rescues an older truck think insurance. A 78 K100 is just a 78 K100 no matter how much money you dump into it. You can fight Swift's insurance company if you wanna try but you won't win if your truck is totalled out by them. Insurance is a tax write off. So insurance it. I have dumped probably estimating 700 thousand dollars in this truck to keep it like new not to mention 100 thousand on a 15 thousand dollar purchase. I pay extra insurance.
I probably love my truck as much as I love my wife. My wife is 50 and my truck looks brand new. Thank God I am old because it's getting harder and harder to keep her looking like new. But she's like me. The interior is the original KW high end diamond tuck even the doghouse. Harder and harder to find upholstered to keep it original nowdays.

I know the daughter of the truck driver that saved those kids..she was just tellin me the story because I asked her why she had a pin of a dime on her badge. She told me the whole story. She told me to listen to the song Phantom 309, because it was about her father. So I came to listen to the song myself. And I almost cried. When you really know the story from someone related to the one in the song, it hits real deep. God bless you “Big Joe” for saving those children in the cost of your own life. ♥️ may you rest in peace 🌹

My first rig was a 69 R model, R cab on a B glider (No kidding! Mack still had B parts to use up!) Naturally sucking 711 with the unbreakable Duplex, 2 gear levers, 5 'n 2. Million miles at least, NOT A PENNY ON THE POWER TRAIN, EVER! NOT A SINGLE CENT! Touch the key: BOOM! On one turnover! I did bust the trunnions (Cast) and cracked a leaf spring (I was always overloaded with fine Indiana Timber.) Top speed was 54 miles an hour, 2200 rpm. 40 ton plus, 6 mpg. I can see that Bulldog's azz in my sleep. I always wanted a B, so I kinda had one. Just looked like an R. Would still be running today, if the 1.5 inch line to the luberfiner handna busted 'n pumped the CC dry in about 20 seconds. Spun a bearing... Never sold the Old Yellow Dog. Parked on my Yard... Say Hi to your Grandpa next time in your prayers from another Mack man. My next rig was a CH, 300 Plus, 10 speed RR. MG, what power! 45 ton, 85 mph. I look at these look-a-like rigs today and think, those boys missed the Truckin Glory Days. They still run those old Macks in OZ, bull hauling.
