  • Snap shot review of the Hyperlite protective, gloves, elbows, pants and shoulders. Bauer really missed the boat on this gear release and the quality has suffered. I give the full honest run down and give you my thoughts on what gear to get if you need the lightest and most mobile protective instead.

I have been a big bauer fan for years but replaced a lot of my bauer gear in the last month with ccm tacks equipment due to all this quality and fitting aspects. bauer should change priorities. 1st = quality, 2nd= quality, 3rd = invest in marketing and influencers.

This is interesting because I have the hyper lite gloves, skates and stick and love them all. I had tried ccm products prior to and found their gear was terrible. Sticks broke easily, gloves fell apart and my skates started wearing out at the ankles which I’ve never seen before. I made the switch back to Bauer and have been happy so far however I don’t have all of the hyperlite gear.

I’m just getting back into playing hockey after 12 years of not playing, and I’m loving your honest reviews. When I started looking up gear since my bag from high school is in a storage unit across the state in Montrose, all of these videos including yours started popping up, and in every other video everyone is just promoting the best most expensive gear and saying how awesome it is, and how great these flex sticks are blah, blah, blah.
I played from 1994-95 in my first real league when I was 4-5yo up until 2008 when I left high school and always used used equipment. I remember playing against rich people and their teams with all the fancy new gear, and I’m still to this day a strong believer that skill outweighs expensive gear, but expensive gear could possibly give a skilled player a bigger edge.
This video is exactly that because I recently just bought an entire bag off a guy who was older and taller than me for only $50 ( came with two wood sticks too but unfortunately righty’s ), and his gear is old school like what’s in my storage unit, and seems to be built better just like how older vehicles are easier to fix and built way better, but everyone buys these new fancy electronic computer ran vehicles because they think they’re better.
A lot of the sticks I see are for sure better now than using an old woody, 2 piece, and even the early versions of the now dominant lite one pieces, but as far as skates and pads go I kinda believe it’s a lot of hype.
I’m personally going to buy all brand new equipment here soon both a set of the cheapest CCM gear, and their most expensive gear ( I’ve just always used CCM, and I owned 1 Bauer helmet, now 2 with recent gear bag purchase ) and do a test of all 4 sets.
I have my high school gear which is from around 2003-2004ish and still have my two Easton Synergy Modano sticks. I have this guys gear which is from around the same time except 2 old wood sticks, I have my friends pair of Bauer 3x skates still he lent me in 2010 or so to go creek skating around town, and then will use the new gear and new sticks.
I already have a feeling I know what the outcome will be. Keep the new sticks, possibly skates and some gear, but will store the rest because it’s just hype. Just my opinion and thoughts as of now. I actually found 2 lefty’s at Goodwill a week ago for $5-6 total on sale. One’s a two piece Synergy 2 which needs a new blade, and the other is called a GEAR Hornet which I’ve never heard of or seen before, and it’s actually pretty nice and lite.
Either way keep up the great video content and honesty on your actual experiences using the gear and sticks.

Thanks for the video and prior comments steering me away from these. I, like you, am always trying to find the perfect gear in terms of not thinking about it whatsoever when out on the ice but still have great protection.
I started with almost all Bauer gear when I got back into playing hockey last year after 15 years of not playing. At this point the only Bauer gear I have and like is the X2.9 shinnies. I actually love those - they fit perfectly compared to all the CCM and Warrior ones I tried. I will possibly look into the Hyperlite shin pads later but I’m in no rush.
Pretty disappointed in Bauer these days. They seem to be spending more money on rebranding and marketing than quality material and design.

They did the same thing on the previous 2x pro elbow pad and it looks completely ridiculous under a jersey. I’m currently using CCM as-v pro elbow pads and they are great so far. @andersborum9267 Před rokem +2

Justin, thanks for the honest review; it's super important to get as unbiased an oppinion as possible for those players shopping for upgrades or are coming into the sport. It's overall really not a surprise that Bauer is marketing flimsy protective products as the overall consensus from a range of their product lines (sticks, skates etc.) definitely has been inferior quality wise (especially around sticks where CCM is pulling off great improvements in durability).
I just don't get (as in "what the actual f..") why a company the size of Bauer finds it completely viable to design, produce and market protective gear like the Hyperlite series you're reviewing despite it's obvious flaws; are the designers even hockey players or are they just completely deaf to player feedback?
I get it, all the companies wants to make protective gear that makes the average rec hockey player look like a f.. transformer under the jersey, so they come up with all these futuristic plastic and carbon designs, velcro strap systems and strange "this and that" flaps. In all honesty, who f.. cares? I'd argue that if you put together a group of experienced rec hockey players and were allowed to pick from all types of material etc., you'd end up with a design that was focused entirely on function rather than form. Again, who in their right minds would even consider using a shoulder velcro system as found on the Hyperlite series? (a kind reminder to the Bauer frankenshins I'm rocking, including heavy velcro modification of the CCM body armour as well)
If I were you Justin, I'd use this opportunity to direct proper feedback to Bauer and remind them that there's actually growing concern about Bauer's product quality lack of awareness of what hockey players actually ask for. I see a huge opportunity for a 3rd party vendor to basically corner the entire market here.
Sorry for the huge rant but I'm just getting sick of the forced product designs and "improvements"; also, you're totally spot on with the FT4 Pro series, especially for pants. I have two pairs of FT4 Pro in different colors as I play on two teams and I'd recommend them to anybody looking for lightweight, protective and especially super quick drying gear.

Ok so….As much as I appreciate your efforts and the excellent video you made, I must say I have never disagreed more with a review! I think there is a lack of understanding in what Bauer is looking to accomplish with their different lines. You are not a vapor line guy at all but you are clearly a supreme line guy! So my guess is with the shoulder pads that the bicep guard is for players like myself that wish they could remove it completely. I hate Restrictive equipment. I want the absolute latest equipment on the market and top performance. I know I will never get the quality and longevity in the gear I’m looking for and I understand it’s a choice… Especially with skates and sticks… I actually cut the cuff out of my gloves. (Unless they are eagle X 50s from 20 years ago with the massive open cuff) I currently use the bauer 2n pro with the adjustable cuff and cut the cuff out of every pair. The 2X pro line was by far better for me than the 1x 2x pro is my favorite Bauer line ever. As a 6’4 240lb man still playing high-level tournament hockey for ice & roller but at my age protection is becoming a concern and the 2x elbow guards are much more protective when falling on roller. Ice the 1x was fine but for roller I almost broke my elbow 2-3 times and upgraded to the 2x pro and haven’t had a problem again. It’s at full speed when a stick gets caught in your skates and you land all your weight on your elbow type of situations where you really test the equipment. That is the reason for the massive bulge, that interior space is the protection rather than a ton of extra padding which increases weight. I do agree with it bunching my jersey. Lastly The material that you’re speaking of is made not to absorb the sweat keeping bacteria and smell to a minimum by Being a protective layer between the sweat and the more absorbing materials

    • @beerleaguebumhockeyreviews
      @beerleaguebumhockeyreviews  Před rokem

All good we can agree to disagree that’s the Beauty of it. Overall I always liked the Vapor line protective through the years but it did go side ways as time went on. The 2xpro elbows started that weird trend and they were awful. Your explanation on the bludgeoned is weird ccm and true and others don’t use that and I’ve never hurt my elbow falling on my pads. Making a bicep guard terribly in case you remove it is weird, the material being a spounge is weird as ccm doesn’t do that and the pants floating system digs into your sides. Over all it’s just not great but if you like it awesome man it’s all subjective anyway

At least they fixed the terrible palms on the gloves, but other than that it looks like they just took the 2X Pro gloves and messed around with them. Same with the elbow pads.

This is why you always take these reviews with a grain of salt, everyone is so much different than the next guy and i’ll explain why. I have these hyperlite pants, have been using them for 4 months now 6 days a week and there the best, most comfortable pants i’ve ever owned. I came from the CCM super tacks which in retrospect really aren’t far off from the current CCM ASV’s so i have experience with CCM’s but i just don’t think there up to par with the hyperlites (and yes i tried on the ASV Pro’s before i purchased the hyperlights) It’s weird that this guy gets apparently so wet in this liner that’s particularly ment to wick away moisture, which it does, (i’ve never had a problem with these being wet whatsoever) i got an idea, maybe stop falling, you probably spending to much time on your ass if your getting “soaking wet” in these pants, try taping your ankles bro bro and to top it off the floating back piece and straps don’t bother me at all, even my inside pieces hold there shape fine so idk if you got the worst pair ever coincidentally but these are the best pants i’ve ever used and i’ve played AAA ice hockey my whole life so
The only thing i will agree with you on is the fact that the straps in the front do kinda just bog around and sit there, there really should be somewhere to tuck them in or some shit, kinda lame but far af from being a deal breaker by any means
