    people ask why they are coming out after more than 200 years. I hope this helps to answer that question:
    The closest I could come to answering “why?“ Is using mathematics : here’s your answer,
    13 x 17 = 221 years
    What this means is that every 221 years this particular brood of 13 year periodical cicadas emerge at the same time as the 17 year periodical cicada brood.
    The last time this occurred was in 1803 & the next time they’ll emerge together will be 2245.
    But in between those double emergence events the two individual broods emerge regularly by themselves either every 13 or 17 years
    There are also 19 year periodical cicadas and of course the regular (non-periodical) cicadas that emerge every single year. take care and don’t worry I live in the middle of rural North Carolina and yes, the bugs are noisy and yes, very annoying but they’re very safe. They don’t bite. They don’t sting and they’re really really important for the environment. I live in an area of both woodland next to farmland, and they have been flying around for the last two weeks, throwing up a racket, but they haven’t hurt any of our crops nor have they hurt any of the trees around here… they’re just noisy

      I know right? 😂 😂

    • @madyjules
      @madyjules Před měsícem

      😂 they’re not lying I promise you… there’s two different kinds of cicadas: the first type is the regular annual cicadas that DO certainly come out every single year and then there’s the second type (which they’re discussing in this news cast) and they’re called periodical cicadas.
      I was taught that the periodical cicadas only emerged every 17 or 19 years. Then I just read an article in a scientific journal that stated scientists recently identified a new periodical cicada that had a 13 year emergence lifespan.
      The entomologist she interviewed for this clip was being honest when he said, “it is possible with a 13 year brood emerging at the same time as a 19 year brood.; there may be some interbreeding between the two and we’re just gonna have to see what happens” that’s how science works a lot of the time. No one is lying you’re just seeing science in action.
