Exploring the Lost Railway Viaduct of Ingleton

- Planned in 1846 to form part of a main route from London to Scotland it’s 3 county journey starts at Clapham stopping short 4 miles away at Ingleton laid by the Little NWR eager to reach a sought after spot Nth of Shap on the WCML.
Music used: 'Snowfall' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au
It only served 10 mths before the line closed thus the race was back on! Many railway companies were keen to see it completed as it would be quicker this way rather than the what the WCML had to offer due to the difficult terrain.
The final 18 miles was built by the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway from 1861 by 1600 Navies with 70 horses taking stone from a local quarry. I venture along this line to hunt out it's hidden secretes and features stopping short in awe at the stone and iron giant Waterside viaduct.

Gordon. I have to agree with everyone else. The quality of this edition is fantastic. Yes the famous structures on the line are at Ingleton and Low Gill. But, there will always be hidden gems and you've found them. As regards the 2 company's at Ingleton at one point the passengers had to walk between the 2 separate stations. But, to be awkward the LNWR as the LCR had become wouldn't hold their trains for the MR. Hence the S&C being built. Only when that got passed through Parliament. The LNWR consented to cooperate with the MR who then went back to Parliament to have the S&C order cancelled. Parliament refused and the S&C was built
Thank you buddy. Yes your spot on. Such a great tale on the rails. Off to Settle today 🚂👍
@@nodrog ooooo enjoy.
@@nodrog Shame you are not going tomorrow when I am driving the S and C !!
Oh no! I’m sure I’ll catch up with you soon buddy. Enjoy the trip 👍
@@nodrog Thanks Gordon, you have a good day up there and hope the rain doesn't ruin things for you !!
This feels like I'm watching an actual TV show!
It’s better than any tv show! 👍👍😊
Same
Same too
Gordon, I've just read the 8 comments to date relating to this contribution and I agree with them all 100%. I doubt any mainstream tv channel with a budget of £tens of thousands or more? could come up with anything more informative, entertaining and as articulately presented as this. One word - brilliant.
Really appreciate your kind comment. Thank you. I enjoy making these.
What a gorgeous bridge, Gordon!! I’m glad you’re able to show us these things .
My pleasure. Thank you for watching.
wow that was brilliant wish this was on tv your lost railway videos are miles better then the ones on tv great work and keep safe looking forward to the next one.
Really enjoying these Gordon, your doing an amazing job of showcasing the history of our rail network in the Northwest, great camera angles again show off some of the finest railway architecture in the country. Well done mate keep it up 👍👍
Gordon, your productions have reached a level which challenges that of major television companies. I like the combination of facts, anecdotes and appreciation of the beauty of the places you go to, not to mention the cinematography. Thank you once again for a fantastic episode.
Excellent and I’ve been both here and to Lowgill many times wondering, how they built such magnificent structures back then !!
I'd like to add that I too felt the quality of this video is on par with what one would expect from companies with huge budgets at their disposal - I really hope this video will get thousands and thousands of views and likes (I did not forget to leave one myself).
Absolutely fabulous video. That viaduct is amazing fantastic engineering.
Love the history ❤ some outstanding bridges and viaducts , excellent footage
For a while after closure the line remained fully maintained to act as a diversionary route for the S&C. One evening in the late 60s we were on the A65 when near Ingleton suddenly a Peak locomotive came over the embankment with a train of Mk1s with all the lights on and crossed the road bridge with its St Pancras to Glasgow service. It was a magnificent sight, and the last time I saw a train on the line.
Your work gets better and better, Gordon. I agree with all the comments, you should be on TV.
There were so many viaducts with iron sections cut up for scrap. Those are two remarkable survivors.
Why didn't they reinstate the bridge deck on the metal section when they were refurbishing the viaduct?
I would love to walk over those beautiful bridges.
Your excellent video captures the essence of disused railways for me 🚂
Glad you enjoyed it
My father was the "Pilotman" ,in charge of Train movements during the removal of the line from Clapham , and I had several footplate trips at the time . Just wish I had a camera then ! Great documentary .
Many thanks for sharing this!
Another brilliant episode Gordon 👍...many TV program maker’s could learn a few things from you...I never knew these amazing structures still stood..wow...and as ever very informative 👍looking forward to seeing what comes next 🙂..
Great production quality Gordon. Top notch 👍🏻
Wow only 3000 odd views of a broadcast quality video, this channel will explode shortly. Absolute quality 👍
A nice Viaduct & bridge 🙂🚂🚂🚂
As good as any tv documentary , love watching these videos .
Gordon A Absolutely Fantastic Video
What a well put together video, great job.
Thank you from New Zealand this was excellent love the drone shots
Another excellent and very informative video. thank you!
Brilliant presentation. Highly watchable. Nice one.
Some great comments already on here. I echo those. I’m lost for words now, trying to find the right words of praise, and trying to work out just how someone gets a ‘break’ to transition from this to being a major tv series and tv presenter. It’s all there already. Somehow the door just needs opening. Well done mate.
Thank you buddy. Really great comment. I like sharing these experiences with you all - the best way they deserve.
Brilliant drone shots make for one very professional and informative video.
Another great video Gordon keep them coming as your knowledge of old railways is second to non and very interesting 👍
Thank you buddy 🚂👍
I love these trips out to the old railway lines Gordon, very professional indeed. These beautiful old bridges and viaducts are so fascinating to see. What a wonderful way to travel and so sad the line was never saved.
Brilliant journey across the Ingleton Branch alone, remember Paul and Rebecca looking at this and those viaduct/Bridges were impressive and watching this video those Bridges/Viaducts are still impressive to look at.
Outstanding and so professional in the presentation.
Absolutely stunning Gordon.. i was quite taken by your drone footage as it climbed above the viaduct bringing the lakeland mountains into view ..Thank you so much for these videos they truly are superb and even as walkers we are transfixed by the beauty not only in the line and viaducts but the surrounding countryside ...Some of your best work to date mate ....with our best regards Frank & Lee.......
I would like to see the Ingleton branch line to reopen and for Northern and Transpennine Express to operate on the branch line. And to serve the local community. Such a amazing video with amazing scenery. Very nice Nodrog.
Great watch mate loved it👍
Love your drone work, just allows you to show off the structures and the stunning countryside. Makes note: buy a drone....
Brilliant video Gordon. I loved this.
Fascinating Nodrog the story of 60103 Flying Scotsman must of told a huge impacted Sedburgh if the branch survived today it would follow a huge consist of Railway Enthusits and character events like those you see at the popular Preserved Heritage Railways like the Severn Valley Railway and its amazing to see some Railway Artifacts like the hidden water slopes which must of been another way to trespass water:)
Great photo of Edge Hill Patriot 45550.
Another quality video top man👍
I'm from ingleton had many ride on the steam engines when they used to to stop at ingleton Station taking there truck loads of sleepers and rails when the took the line up....
One of your best yet Gordon. Drone work superb 👍
Another beautiful one. By the way: Paul and Rebecca Whitewick have done one or more videos on that line and its structures too. :D
Auld lang the music played on the last journey of the CK&P, look at those bridges they are something else, and i fully agree had the axe not fallen many would be in use today
Cracking video as per! Class looking at lines near myself!
Another beautiful capture of our neck of the woods it's so worthy of a reveal to show how much we have not too far from our doorsteps .
Great video!
Very professional and informative video!
Glad you liked it!
@@nodrog I grew up in Ingleton so an added bonus for me!
I also have an interest in photography & video & as a new drone pilot am aiming to do some flying on my next visit.
Excellent! Enjoy buddy. These structures are awesome. I never get bored venturing along them.
Simply wonderful, thank you very much
My pleasure. Thank you for watching.
Amazing vlog proper enjoyed it
amazing video gordon
As a photographer, and retired railway man, who knows just a little of this part of the world, I say thank you for a wonderful video, and the research and passion that went into it. Thank you.
Every video i watch Gordon u just get better and better !! Will have to show Kate when she gets up Its not been a good last few days Her Mum Just passed away in hospital
Oh no! My family sends our love and thoughts.
I’m gonna have to click the bell icon
Absolute top class video Gordon. I applaude you for such beautiful work and the nice touch at the end with the heartstrings pulling final segment. Well done
What kind of decking was on the iron parts of the viaducts ? Outstanding presentation .Thanks for posting.
This Clapham is a very far cry from the Clapham I'm more familiar with, in Greater London, this one is far more beautiful :)
Another great vlog Gordon
What a great shame that these lines cant be relayed
After all aren't we all supposed to be going greener and using public transport? And what lovely countryside it goes through
watching this video makes me more kean to re-trace and find reminance of the lost crossgates - weatherby 10 mile branchline since i recently used a website to compare a station site at a very quietly peaceful and adilic village witch any other person would likely suspect a sertain spot was once a station with sadly no remains i find it sad that some lines never suvived but at the same time very intresting
This has to be one of your best vlogs yet including the Low gil one you did. I came across this structure while driving to Low Gil. These are magnificent structures. This is well documented, with a professional presentation to be told only by The Best on here. Your time and efforts are the best with scenery and fabulous locations with lots of history mentioned along the old line. Do you know if they do tours or open the gates at the top so you can take a closer look. ?
Great video Gorden and if I am honest you should be doing this sort of thing for the TV. We need more down to folk on the box.
My only issue is the number of ads does interrupt the flow, there were to many !
Thank you. Sometimes CZcams will hit some viewers with a full rake of adverts. Must of been your turn. Sorry.
@@nodrog CZcams are really becoming a pain as I know from my channel. Just thought I would mention it or you won't know. Looking forward to the next one.
Just saying, but lose the shades on the bald for more credibility. Bit silly
