  • Join me for a walk around the picturesque village of Ingleton, located at the foot of Ingleborough mountain on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Famous for its stunning waterfalls, the village is also full of fascinating history, and an unexpected connection to Sherlock Holmes, one of Britain's most famous literary characters!
As we walk around Ingleton, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Ingleton Viaduct, Joseph Carr Memorial Fountain, St. Mary's Church, Ingleton War Memorial, Ingleton Village Square, Ingleborough Nursing Home, The Wheatsheaf Hotel, Ingleton Literary Institute, St. Mary's Churchyard, the River Doe, and then towards the River Twiss, Pecca Falls, Holly Bush Spout, and Thornton Force Waterfall.

Thanks for this video. Showing Ingleton’s charm. I’m Vicar of Ingleton and look after St Mary’s Church. As you mention there have been concerns about the site’s stability. We had an engineer out and did excavations 4 years ago. He said the church was robust and that it actually helped stabilise the site by taking away rain water through gutters and into the drains rather than into the ground. Everyone’s welcome at the church. Open for services and during the week. We do online services too.

Fascinating to hear! It's quite the impressive job that has been done preserving St. Mary's Church over the years, and I'm delighted that it remains the heart of the community after all this time, it's a wonderful place to visit and I'm sure you are responsible for so much of that :)
Thank you so much for watching the video and for your very kind words - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Thank you for your retelling of the history of Ingleton. Randall Hopley Sherlock was only a local resident for a very brief time - just a few days. He had retired to Ingleton after editing a Liverpool newspaper for some years. He had gone to the railway station to enquire after his luggage which had not yet arrived. While walking home he was killed by lightening. His son and wife paid for the window in his memory.

Beautiful falls! Good for the locals for keeping the church as it is. I have several books on Yorkshire, and one of them gives the history of how the names of places came to be. A lot of them come from old Norse, some from Anglo-Saxon times. Endings like -ton refer to a farm or village. There are lots of other meanings like -thorpe, -by, -ham, etc. I love finding the history of words in the English language.
Thanks again for doing these walks. I never get tired of them.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - Ingleton really is one of those places that seems like a simple and quaint Yorkshire village at first glance, but is rich in history the deeper you dig and dig. And like you I love discovering the history of English place names, it's so fascinating :)

Good evening! Thank you very much for tuning in - and thank you very much for helping us reach 3,300 subscribers - it really means a lot to see your support :)
Now for some bonus info on Ingleton: we mentioned that the area below the viaduct was named 'Holmes', possibly linking it to the detective himself, but it was also the site of a major settlement of navvies (railway builders), who occupied the area while building the viaduct in the 1870s, as well as the famous Settle-Carlisle line that runs through the Yorkshire Dales. Millennia before, in prehistoric times, the area was used as land for farming - meaning that it's been the site of activity for a long time indeed!

Spectacular indeed! I understand folk wanting to fly out to sunnier climes, particularly after the last year or so of weirdness with this godawful pandemic. But there are so many stunning locations around the UK combined with ancient history. I hope the hotel business here receives a massive injection of support now we're able to move around more freely. Always assuming ol' Boris doesn't change what's become known as the 'day of liberty', the 21st June. Fingers crossed. Another splendiferous walk, sir.

Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words - I'm so glad you enjoy watching these videos :)
I do receive many comments asking for audio narration - and it's something I'm looking towards, though it's in rather early stages of development at the moment simply due to time constraints. Either way I'll certainly give it a go alongside the non-audio narrated walks, which I know a lot of people enjoy too!
Thank you for watching and your suggestion!

what time of year did you do this walk?
and at what time of year do you think the waterfalls will be most powerful?

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  Před 2 lety +1

Hi there! This walk was filmed at the end of May this year - just as the foliage around the area reaches its fullest point :)
As for the waterfalls, they're pretty impressive to see all year round, but they're at their most powerful after rain, or after snow has melted from on top of the Dales, so perhaps March would be a good time to visit if you're happy to wrap up for the cold!
Thank you so much for watching - and I do hope I helped answer your question!
