  • How can you get more clients by networking? Networking has some negative connotations and seems insincere. So how do you get more clients? How do you build a powerful network? Meet people and help them in a genuine way. Start with your classmate and grow to expand from there.
    Reciprocity-
the practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit, especially privileges granted by one country or organization to another.
Do something for someone without expecting anything in return. If you approach relationships this way, you build much stronger friendships that might benefit you in the long run.

I’ve always hated hearing the word “networking” because it gives me so much anxiety. One of the main things they encourage in college is to network and I always worry that I’m not talking to the right person, or doing enough to get myself out there. Hence, the anxiety. I really like the take on focusing on relationships, because that’s something you can’t bs, you know. I like that it’s a different mindset than just “networking” if that makes sense.

Fabulous insight! Before the notion of “networking” I used to team up people all the time...and then all of a sudden this became something that was happening in places like BNI, etc.. Organic and authentic networking is much easier.
Chris Do, you’re already one of my mentors. Maybe cybermentor is a better word. 😁

Definitely one of the kickass advice ever. I have seen myself coming from a Mechanical Engg background and yet gaining the trust of a lot of my peer group who are into marketing and business development. All because of some genuine help in video production during my college days. Added to that, a couple of good video projects in my portfolio has built even more trust. But yes, a major percentage of my project leads are still due to word of mouth recommendations by my college peer group.
Absolutely a golden piece of advice. "Meet people and help them in a genuine way. Start with your classmate and grow to expand from there."

I don't understand with the mentor issue: if you try to "close the gap", what is the point of having a mentor? Isn't a mentor supposed to be someone who helps you get to a higher level? If you're already progressing on your own, why do you need a mentor?
Also I think having a designer you admire doesn't mean they can actually help you. I've realized that I don't want someone to influence my individual style as a person, regardless of whether or not I like them. Some people I've seen, not just designer but also artists, have been artist's assistants, but then they become almost consumed by their style as an assistant/apprentice/student that they loose their individual identity in a way.

Network with the mindset to offer values and help. Give. Never go into a networking to hunt. Or expect to get sales. Typical mistake. Become that bridge that connects people with the things they want.

We have to know where we are in our career. So invest in learning from the best out there and work for free to build relationships and then help those who are moving up the ladder below you.
Chris once said in a video, hijack your mentors. (With books and who are their influences). 100% true

Hi Chris (or the person who replies to these comments) this is a bit unrelated but I am at a bit of a standstill right now, I know I want to go into branding and the plan is to work @ a brand agency when I finish school, The only thing is that i'm not sure what exactly to include in my portfolio (I have branding projects of course with fake client identity presentations etc. ) but I also have a love for font design too. I know it's best to be specific in my niche to have the best chance of success, I guess what i'm asking is for some clarity on the balance between projects that show Design thinking (required specifically for the job I would be doing) and other projects that are more "soulful" and that are for pleasure. Thanks ;-) BTW loving the bitesize clips, really really helpful.

    • @thefutur

it's me Josh. why can't design thinking be soulful?

    • @shuax
      @shuax Pƙed 6 lety

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply as always, It's kind of hard to say what I mean, I love Design thinking, and I feel a real sense of gratitude and personal growth every time I learn a piece of new information/strategy.
Talking about showing this in my portfolio I think it may come down to that basic psychological thing of because I have to show this, I lose some of that interest temporarily. That and not having the real clients to showcase my work more passionately.
