    To me, as a lifelong Lakers fan this will always be the biggest WHAT IF? A close second would be the CP3 trade to the Lakers but I can only imagine if Shaq decided to take a backseat to Kobe who’s about to go into this prime

      That loss was Karl Malone and Horace Grant both getting injured right before the finals. The Lakers had no power forward. They had no one to guard rasheed Wallace. That Detroit team is the luckiest team ever. If Karl Malone got injured a series or two earlier, the Lakers would lost to the spurs or to the timberwolves and Detroit wasn't beating either of those teams.
      That Detroit team wouldn't have made it out of the second round if the nets had been healthy. And they wouldn't have beaten the pacers in the conference finals if the pacers were healthy. They were the sixth best team in the nba that year.

      @@jeremiahlewis4630 This is a story from Phil Jackson ill make it quick. Shaq was injured for a stretch of games. This turned into Kobe averaging 40 for a month. Phill calls Kobe in and says, “Hey Kobe we need you to dial it back so we can keep Shaq involved in the offense. When he’s having a good offensive night he plays better defense.” And Kobe obliged....
      I don’t understand where that narrative came from. It definitely didn’t come from anyone on the team. That’s a media thing. Shaq says they’d talk shit about each other to the media in the locker room then look across the room and wink at each other so...
      I think people should let go of that narrative now. It was entertaining but it’s not true.

      Wrong. Many of y'all are not aware that Shaq signed an extension with the Lakers in 2000. So in 2003 his contract from 1996 ended his new contract was starting and that was the problem along with Kobe's constant complaining

    Of course you wanted to be a laker for ever but the organization had to choose between you and Kobe.if they kept you Kobe would've leave because he wanted to build his own legacy and show that he can lead a team to championships as the alpha.     I feel like they maxed out at the 3 championships they won. It was at that point where Kobe knew it was now or never. If Shaq stayed it would never be his team so Kobe gave the ultimatum, either he leaves or I do and I dont blame Kobe for his Alpha mentality of wanting to be the top dog and leader of his own team. Kobe's one championship against the Celtics means more to him than the rest of his championships combined not just because of the caliber of the opposition, but because he was the general leading his soldiers. Again, just my opinion.

    This isn't 100 percent accurate. Kobe was a free agent at the time and told the lakers that it's me or Shaq. He was threatening to sign with the bulls or clippers. Kobe said that he had to get shaq traded out of LA in order to get out of Shaq's shadow. With Shaq there it would always be his team and Kobe would always be robin to Shaq's batman. In order for Kobe to ever make it and be considered a top 10 player of all time he had to do it without Shaq. That is how Kobe thought, he wanted to be the undisputed Alpha

    If you want the real Shaq Kobe story go read “three ring circus” by Jeff pearlman. You’ll get the real, Shaq and Kobe hated each other and Kobe said he didn’t wanna play with Shaq anymore after the 04 finals. Kobe had a deal done with the Clippers if the Lakers brought Shaq back, the traded Shaq and Kobe remained a laker.

      That’s an awful book, not the “real story”. Jeff Pearlmann is the writer version of Nick Wright - he has an agenda and always hated Kobe Bryant. He interviewed every person he could find who might say something bad about him, and ignored anyone else.
