The battle of the senators
Anakin: I'm so glad you don't have to go out on the front lines, it's so dangerous there and you'd never survive!
Padmé, who just saw two of her colleagues murdered: Uhhh
Honestly, the dangers for a Senator came from everywhere. In public, they were despised by the common people for their greed. In the Senate, their own Senators would stab them on the back. Even the people in charge of protecting them could (if paid enough) stab them in the backâŠ
Yep, you pretty much have to be alert your whole life.
Practically is a huge stabby stabby game
Caesar role-play.
No wonder the jedi wanted to avoid the senate. Itâs always the senate they keeps bringing the jedi back in to there flaming wreckage of a senate and beg them âyou have to help the republic will fall if you donâtâ
It's pretty sad Palpatine dissolved the Senate just when all the senators were leaving aside their differences in order to face together a common enemy: The Empire
Well I mean... palps is the senate
@@ajrobson2191 does that mean he dissolved himself? O_0
I mean that is the reason why Emperor Palpatine dissolved the Imperial Senate.
Almost makes you feel bad for the Coruscant Guard to deal with this...
Emphasis on almost.
I feel very bad for them
Good video. Maybe a "What happened to the Sith Empire after SWTOR" or "Why the New Republic didn't solve the Old's problems"?
I would love a video on what happened to the sith empire. Despite all its flaws, it possessed a sound and capable structure. So it being destroyed couldnât have been a easy feat.
Swtor: it takes time to write, you know.
Yes
Being a Senator in the SW universe is like a game of Among Us except everyone is imposter and the ones that did task often gets killed

If I remember that right, In 'Clone Wars' no one even asked why Padme came out of Hyperspace in tractor range of the Malevolence. The chances for that being an accident are higher than astronomical, starting with the mission that brought her out there. No one even suspected that it might have been Palpatine himself that sent her there. I guess everyone assumed that someone put the wrong coordinates into her astrogation computer. And with the number of Senators getting hurt and killed no one bothered to look deeper into it.
Wouldn't being a senator in Star wars is like a twitter user with a different opinion but with assassins included.
Indeed,
Palpatine: Congratulations Senators, you have just given me unlimited political power
Senators: Great, what do we win?
Palpatine: Nothing! Now get out
Senators:Uh, what?
Palpatine: Get out! All of you get out youâre spoiling my moment.
What's scary is that the people who go "durr space politics make my brain hurt and I can't follow the story" are alive and voting in our world.
What's even scarier is that some of them reproduce
Not really, one can find politics in media boring especially if you are seeking escapism.
I am not like that, but I know plenty of people who are.
Senators: I have so much power and so much money.
Also Senators: Help me, I'm in terrible danger. Everyone and anyone is out to get me.
Just two more to add to this: in the initial stages of the True Sithâs return ( _Star Wars: the Old Republic_ lore), senators were sent to negotiate, but were fired upon on sight⊠On a mission to Buy Count Dooku from Hondo Ohnaka & his pirates, a Senator told Binks about the last time he was on a ransom missionâŠ
To clarify, that senator weâre talking about, at least initially by you, @Mackenzie Bauroth, was about how things were before the start of the clone warsâŠ
This just goes to show that if you strip the Sith, Megacorporation and Droid Army influence from separatists, they might as well be the good guys. They were fighting for less corruption, less taxation and more freedom. Very similar to the American and initial stages of the French Revolution.
Why woudk the droid army be bad in and of itself? All the bad parts of it fall under with or corperated influence.
@@matthiuskoenig3378 all they had to do was set for stun, and the complaints go away.
The Separatists would never have formed naturally without the Sith and the megacorps. For one thing, everybody had their own issues. Not everyone were the regular folks ignored by the government thanks to the corruption. A lot of these more morally evil members were brought in just like the Separatist Council, thanks to Dooku. Now yes, several smaller separatist movements likely would have popped up eventually.
Then comes the military. Even without the Republic as an enemy, the Separatists would need an army tk defend all its worlds, many of which were usually attacked by pirates and crime gangs. They ran rings around most Separatist PDFâs because they were underfunded and lacked the best equipment. Now, whoâs going to supply the Separatists with modern equipment? Republic corporations? Probably not, especially if the Senate was hostile. They would have to rely on Separatidt megacorps, who no doubt would want much in return.
To put it simply, the same conditions that pushed Separatists to secede also make them dependent on the Sith, megacorps, and droid army to be a faction. This shouldnât erase from the fact they had good intentions, which is the point of why they seceded. Still, it just looks like they were screwed to either lose or make deals with the devils.
Extra Fact: A number of Separatist worlds were just planets belonging to megacorps. Think like how the Trade Federation would have ended its blockade of Pantora if they joined the CIS. Despite many planets bring coerced by these corporations into the CIS, other worlds seemed to have positive experiences. Most of the Abrion Sector seceded because the Separatists and likely the megacorps offered better deals for their food compared to the unfair ones with the Republicâs Core Worlds. And megacorps did protect many worlds before the war while the Republic sat back. Of course their were drawbacks.
Well, this explains a lot about the Senators.
Especially Orn Free Taa's bulk: stress eating.
Being a senator is dangerous, but being the senate gives you unlimited power!
Amen
the sad fact is that even if Padme and Anakin got away from the galactic crap shoot, turns out they would have had an unfortunate speeder accident over a rancor pit
Yh political curruption was just what palpatine thrived on.If you were a minor anti war senator you most likely would have an "accident" before or after your big speech
Without outright saying it, Star Wars is a Condemnation of Big Government.
Well played Mr. Lucas.
With less government, big corporations are also less powerful. If you have a bigger government lobby groups can bribe politicians to make decisions that help them. It is a win win for politicians and big companies but a loss for average civilians. Just look at how in the past tobbaco companies made gov say that smoking was good for you, or how sugar industry influences food guide causing obesity epidemic. Ironically people say the solution to this is more government. That creates more corruption. Just look at central Africa. The corruption is a result of too many regulations making it hard for business to survive, so they bribe the government. Also elites and big corporations who want to tax the rich will bypass the tax, making it harder for up and coming business to steal their spot.
@@noidea9133 that's not entirely true. Less government would only mean less people to bribe for big corporations. It would also mean less regulation and I think we can both agree we can't trust corporations to regulate themself. Real world government is far from being as bad as the star wars senate. In star wars, the senate is stupid big and represent thousands of worlds in one place.
@@Torlik11 well, to be fair, I don't believe that what American conservatives consider "small government" is just a government with less politicians, rather a government where politicians have less power so even if you bribe them they can't do much harm. I'm not american though, so I could be wrong.
@@noidea9133 also a small government is easier to over throw i.e what happened in star wars.
@10 Bears Americaâs current government is pretty corrupt. A lot of insider trading shapes what contracts are granted or restrictions are passed, from big thinks like energy regulation to random thinks your wouldnât think about like a credit card company stock. Then donât even get me started on the corruption of the current administration labeling everyday citizens as terrorists so they lose the right protest
4:34 Bringing in the subject of backstabbing makes everyone in this screenshot look dubious, Organa and Amidala included.
In other words, the Senators are playing the 'Game of Thrones' in the Galactic Republic.
Palpatine: I love Democracy. I am the senate.
Pov- you lost count of how many times someone tried to kill Padmé during the Clone Wars.
Jeramad Greyshade's death was one of the important events leading up to the clone wars.
His vote in the bill was said to be essential.
Puts the dissolution of the Imperial Senate in its proper context: Palpatine wanted the senators out of a dangerous environment! What a swell guy.
[insert crime and poverty reduction on Alderaan joke here]
During the clone wars Senators said that Padme was the hardest Senator to assassinate do her connections to the jedi.
I would of loved being on their protection detail in the Shock Troopers besides the cool uniforms the travel you'd get to do guarding Senators would be an awesome adventure.

"Which those without taste consider boring." Well played, well played
Indeed.
The Senate did not feel threatened by anything as he was all powerful.
i mean back in legend days palpi orchestrated to blow up a whole cruiser just to get rid of valorum
Last time I checked, as of June/July of 2021 there have been 86 political assassinations in Mexico by the cartels. Not exactly senators but I thought this could be related to the video.
1) I could be wrong but I think something akin to this happened in the Roman Republic/Empire
2) After hearing this, I don't know what was worse: the republic or the empire
The senate of the films was incredibly dull, it was only in the Clone Wars, when they had the chance to explore it more fully and flesh out key players and build up just how corrupt and inefficient the system was that it actually became interesting.
I think movies made a good job. I always thought that CW didn't flesh out the senate as great as they could.
It makes me wonder how principled Senators like Bail Organa and Padme Amidala stayed safe...
I think it's great that you do videos about aspects that, most likely,, almost no one thinks about.
The lack of security is surprising. Don't think the Republic even had an army before the clone wars
They did disband their military years before they receive clone troopers due to lack of warrior culture since they no longer have troopers cause of peace, as well supposed end of sith
Guess the CIS faced similiar issues and the assassination of Mina Bonteri was just the top of the iceberg... maybe the major difference was that senators of the CIS didn't tend to kill each other, but rather got secretly killed by Dooku's command (or anyone else on the CIS's military council), when they opposed anything the CIS did.
Another great video. By far my favorite Star Wars channel.
Funny how Iâve watched so many of your videos but these rare gem made me a subscriber
It's an absolute miracle that moral paragons like Padme, Bail Organa and Mon Mothma ever stood a chance at getting elected into the Galactic Senate.
I guess in Organa's case there is the fact that the house of Organa is one of the most prominent aristocratic dynasties on Alderaan so he was likely able to afford his own election campaign and not be beholden to donors.
In the case of Padme she was already widely popular in her sector owing to her term as Queen of Naboo and I figure she also factored into Palpatine's schemes... especially after Anakin fell in love with her.
Mon Mothma's family was politically connected with her father being an Arbiter-General and her mother being the Governor of Chandrila.
But at the end of the day, Palpatine likely had a hand in all three of them and others like them beating the odds, as he needed a divided Senate that's constantly in deadlock in order for the case for him being granted emergency powers was stronger once the Separatist Crisis came to a head.
Gee, I wonder if all the backstabbings and trying to surpass each other also contributed to the senate being paralyzed before the new sith wars started (obvious sarcasm).
You'd probably have an easier time surviving as a battle droid on a ship with Grevous than as a sentator, haha
So the harem and the senate are not so much different at all.
Except there's no reward with sleeping with the Sultan/Chinese emperor to produce an heir. And not everyone is pretty.
Let's not forget about the assassination of Senator Vidar Kim, the attempted assassination of then Senator Palpatine, and the murder of Senator Pax Teem and the entire Gran Protectorate Embassy. It was a particularly interesting series of events since it involved a complicated matter of adding new Senators to the Senate and how the elimination of an entire Senatorial team was quickly brushed to the side and a return to business as usual.
You forgot to mention Senator Kharrus, who casually mentioned being imprisoned for weeks before dying when his shuttle was shot down. His replacement was gunned down by Cad Bane within a year's time. Shortly before being hired as the prime clone, Jango tossed Connus Trell off the top of a skyscraper and never suffered any consequences, concluding Trell wouldn't be missed.
And this isn't even a reflection of how dangerous being a senator was in wartime. Or under the Empire, where you might be killed by Darth Vader for opposing the Emperor, like Fang Zar, or get killed by an Inquisitor for moving in on their turf, like Daho Sahjan.
Hey man, could you do a video on the star wars black market? Like where was it, was it hidden? If it was how did they keep it hidden. What did they sell on it? Spice, weapons and what other stuff? I think it would be interesting.
This is the true difference between the Senate and the senators
Serving in the Senate is practically being a Twitter user.
Having a opinion & being persecuted for it.

I realized how dangerous it was when Padme had Ahsoka with her and when her uncle was poisoned.
the more Senate intrigue, the better please :)
I conceal carry a RPG when I worked in the senate
This was clearly inspired by the Roman Republic.
Just show me the river Rubicon so I don't cross it with my clone army. I would hate to upset the royal purple clad Coruscanti Home Guard....oops I mean the Pretorian.
I now understand why Padme thought having Obi-Wan and Anakin protecting her was overkill, senators dropped like flies pretty much every month for all Coruscant knew

PadmĂš, bail, mon mothma, farr, chuchi, and yarua are all good senators.
my questions is why not dismantle that system to try to make a new and not broken system ?
Here's my question, how could it be otherwise given how big the SW galaxy is in terms of population and size?
