It heavily leans into a mentality of enabling double standards. That is simply a disingenuous method of discourse.

This is a great tradition and the players and school take it seriously; it's not some sort of publicity "feel good" story to get fans or attention. For instance, this last year Tyler Linderbaum (who was drafted into the NFL) received $30k in NIL (name/image/license for NCAA). He wrote a $30k check to the hospital. Every cent he could have put in his bank account he instead gave it to the children's hospital. The Hawkeyes aren't my college team, but I definitely have an extreme amount of respect for how they do things there. They even let the hospital nominate a patient as a "captain" who gets to choose the song that will play during the wave each week. It's just a really nice touch of letting the kids be part of something that they can look forward to and think back on.

I assure you it is even more emotional than the video shows. We even wrote a book about the experience entitled "From Cancer to Kinnick: Love Finds a Wave" (Available on Amazon). All proceeds go to the Children's Hospital. Thankfully she is now in remission. This tradition is extra special for our family. Our son who is 3 now was up there in that hospital fighting for his life at 6 months old. I had days where I felt like I was on the verge of losing hope, but then a Saturday came and even though he wasn’t able to leave his room they invited us up to the top floor and words can’t describe it. The hope that it brought us was everything we needed in that moment. I still cry sometimes when I watch games and see the wave. Until you have been on the other side of it you have no idea how much that small gesture can change a family’s outlook.

I wish this video actually showed the wave from post 1st Qtr footage. It's awesome!!! I also appreciate the other college teams, and refs too....that ALL join in together for something bigger than themselves and the game. Def a the best college tradition today and the entire midwest, is pretty much the same as Iowa honestly. Good, down to earth, hardworking, humble people.

They were building the Children's Hospital and someone saw that it was right next to the stadium. It was early summer I think and she put on a Facebook Iowa Hawkeyes fan page wouldn't it be really great if at the time between 1st and 2nd quarters everyone in the stands just gets up and waves to the kids?! It was seen by the PR person for Iowa and started talking about it. All summer long. The top floor is where they made a tailgate part for the kids and they can see the game from there. They have games and make it fun for the kids. So the first game came and everyone wondered what would happen that during that first break. And sure enough EVERYONE got up and waved to the kids. Both teams players, refs, coaches, everyone in the stands. All waved to the kids. They have been doing ever since. It is also broadcasted each game as well. During the off season the some players, band people and cheerleaders get together and organize a small version at 11:25 or something when the wave would normally happen. Also the groundskeepers during the winter make drawings in the snow on the field for the kids with the plows. Sooooooo awesome!!!!!!!

Its the best tradition in college football! I am biased on this issue considering I'm a lifelong Hawkeye fan and even have a Hawkeye tattoo. The fact the opposing teams, refs, Hawkeyes, fans, and sick children and their families are all apart of it, that is why no other tradition holds a candle to this tradition.

My grandson was developing normally, doing everything an healthy 18 month old boy would do until one day he stopped walking and started crawling again. We took him to get checked and they did several tests and told us we needed to go to the children's hospital in Iowa City but didn't really tell us why just that they had made an appointment for him. We get there and get on the elevator to the 11th floor. I can't tell you the despair I felt when that door opened and saw the sign reading Children's Cancer Center. I felt like my whole world ended. Fortunately they told us he had a very treatable form of leukemia and after 3 years of treatment he is now cancer free. But now when I think I'm having a bad day I remember that feeling I had that at that moment and realize things can be worse, at least we still have our grandson. We appreciate everything they did for him there and how they treated him like a king.

Hi Beesleys, thank you for this reaction. I am Hawkeye. I have seen lots of reactions by outside USA people to the big college stadiums and tailgates, etc. Most reactors are dumbfounded that these colleges pull as much or more support as pro teams. This is an example of why. Except for the standard percentage of sports hounds in any sport, the people who tailgate and attend these games are not strictly there for the game. For example, here is my normal game day routine for a 1:00 PM kick-off for a home game: By 9:00 AM, I show-up at a house on Melrose Ave. (about 4 blocks from the stadium). My lifelong friends from my hometown an hour and a half away are showing up and driving their cars around the back of the house, where about 15 cars can park and still have room for several grills (which everyone shares and brings extra). After about an hour, with other friends popping over, because they know exactly where to find us, I always make my run to 3 or 4 other locations where I have lifelong friends that I don't see outside of football season. At about 11:30, I end up at a specific tailgate of my brother-in-law's family. He always has a great grill selection and we make a couple of runs through his "shot trailer," before the game. 90% of the people you see are wearing black and gold. If the football team was 8-1 or 1-8, it does not matter. The other 10% of the people are wearing the opposing colors that day and EVERYONE gets along. If the opponent is Iowa State (2-hour drive), Wisconsin (4-hour drive) or Minnesota (4-hour) there will be more of the opposing colors. The red and white Wisconsin Badgers are well known for partying both before and after, regardless of the outcome. It is about pride in your home and your university, as well as an important social event that keeps people connected.

I also want to note that I am proud that my fellow Virginia Tech Hokies stood in for the Iowa fans to give a respectful wave at the end of the story. Hokies fans are paying back the love we received in 2007 when the worst school shooting in US history happened on our campus (I was long graduated). My wife and I were at that game in 2017 (home-opener) against Wyoming and when they announced a new tradition at Kinnick Stadium I thought this was one of the coolest acts of appreciation and kindness ever. My nephew was actually treated there for a couple months for a serious bladder issue from birth of which he has since made a full recovery and can enjoy life as a kid. He saw a game with his grandfather (my dad) and it’s a perspective that when go from supporting a family member being treated there to actually seeing a game and the “Wave” starts it’s rrallly brings everything everything home. I really appreciate your comments and they are spot on. Keep up the great work on reviews! Go Hawks!
