It's not a remake. It's another film version of the Broadway musical.
Just like Baz Luhrman's Romeo+Juliet is not a remake of Zefirelli's Romeo and Juliet. The 1992 Dracula is not a remake of the 1931 Dracula. The "original" source being remade is not necessarily the preceding film, even though it may look like it and sound like it.
A Star is Born is a remake. The Disney live-action films are remakes. That's not what this is.

A technicality in this case. They wrote a role specifically for Rita Moreno, Anita in the 1961 film -- and she's getting Oscar buzz for it right alongside the new Anita, Ariana DeBose. Just singing "Somewhere", the musical's most famous song, at almost 90 (the movie drops the day before her 90th birthday) may itself be worthy of another Oscar nomination.

At first I was scared shitless that this classic would be ruined... but the moment it opened I knew it was going to kick ass, from the choreography, to the songs, all of it made me very happy. It's literally like you're back in time. The scenes and atmosphere just capture that old school style film.

Yeah, so even that wasn't the thing to get me totally excited for this movie, since even the creators of certain anime have given their stamp of approval to pretty profusely hated live-action adaptations in the U.S. Yeah, I heard he worked on some of it with Spielberg for this new version, but it still meant jack up until I heard some early reviews. Plus, the soundtrack for this one at least to me, didn't sound as good as the original up until I actually saw the film. I am glad to say that this film is as good as it was, because even the trailers are something I felt did this movie kind of wrong. It showed the bare minimum in terms of the quality of the musical numbers and the dancing.

    • @nickdorenkamp959

@@thefirstbourne149 Well I think the marketing team might have overlooked that oh we're we are making a trailer to a Steven Spielberg movie where they probably should've realized no we need to make a trailer to a film adaptation of a Stephen Sondheim musical. Because when you compare this to let's say Tim Burton's adaptation of Sweeney Todd or Disney's 2014 adaptation of Into the woods. The marketing teams for those movies knew how those movies needed to be marketed.
That said the soundtrack was incredible especially the America number which had the best dance sequence in the film.

I agree, it does feel like watching a real life 'star is born' moment. Ms. DeBose is also riveting, she has an energy to her scenes in the trailers. Cinematography, choreography, costume design, it makes for scenes that are beautiful and energetic. I suspect if the movie as a whole is reflected in the trailers, the movie will be raking in Oscar nominations and wins. Part of the location shooting was also done not only in NYC but also in East Los Angeles to capture a richer bi-coastal tableau of the Latino immigrant experience in America. Add these to the Latino actors portraying the Latino characters-and you get more authenticity than the ‘61 production.

I come to this review after having seen the film on its first night of release, 12/10/21. I’m 69 and saw the 1961 original within a week of its initial release. It changed my life. When I first heard Spielberg was re-making it, I thought it was a joke, something from The Onion. When I realized it was real, I was offended and determined to boycott the film, but curiosity got the better of me. I rejoice in saying I absolutely love this movie. It’s everything you say. I’ve only one tiny quibble with your review. This remake doesn’t cut a single one of the original songs. It does reorder some, but also reinstates part of the 2nd Act ballet music as underscoring for Maria’s hasty morning prep while A Boy Like That/I Have a Love is performed in full, a number the 1961 film shortens.

Just watched this movie and it was great!!!. I enjoyed the original West Side Story and this New Version from one of my favorite produces Steven Spielberg was definitely not disappointing. Living in New York in the 60s in the South Bronx it brought about a lot of memories as I remember playing stick ball in a dead end street, between several 6 story buildings and using the parked vehicle fenders and bumpers as baseball bases. The soft balls bouncing off the tall 6 story structures as we would run at full speed to catch the ball before it dropped to the floor, sometimes we would dangerously launching over obstacles to make the catch(DOM LOL) but fun. I want to give the movie a plus as there were no Spanish Captions on screen when the actors spoke in Spanish(WOW). The actors Latino NY PR cultural genre was of what I remember growing up hearing with friends and family, that almost made it feel a private joke for those in the audience like myself that spoke both English and Spanish and understood the comical language that was used at the time (60s and 70s). Fell in love Rachel Zegler a mix Hispanic actress and soon to be a "STAR"... The movie was funny , entertaining, romantic and full of energy. Would definitely recommend to see. (A+)

In that moment, I saw Moreno as Anita again, having lived a long life, and there was a beautiful combination of hope and sadness in the way she sang. That said, I missed hearing Maria sing those lines in the final scene.

This remake is grittier and darker and for me, the dancing whilst still fab, isn’t as balletic (which was the best part of the original movie) as I would’ve liked but it’s still fab chorey. Putting it back on film is like translating from French to English back to French. And then throw in the live performance... however, it didn't bother me nearly as much with that musical style as it would with almost anything else.
The project was regarded as successful, though...
The identity of the show that gets adapted matters a lot. Maybe few enough people have seen the products of the MGM musical machine that they can be profitable again?
