I would suggest cleaining the derailleur pulley wheels, the cassette and chainrings BEFORE cleaning the chain to prevent dirt going on the cleaned chain.
Cleaning once a month? Best I can offer is once a year.
Yeah honestly once a year should be fine anyway
It depends on how often you cycle. If it's almost everyday best to clean the chain at least once or twice a month, if not, maybe every 6 months should suffice
Wait you guys clean your chains? 🫣
Just replace the chain once a year. Or better do bike maintenance in a bike shop once a year and get a new chain and clean drive train without any hassle.
@@darikfrye91no wonder your bike doesn’t peddle 😂
The Biodegradable Citrus ChainBrite solution has worked great as a general purpose cleaner on all my restorations.
The CM 5.2 is a cracking bit of kit! 10/10
I got here from watching drag racing videos. Now i wanna go buy a bike and clean its chain.
Lmao
no you don't. not the bike I had that is.
I bought similar bike clean tools a few days ago and it is also very nice.

Hahaha.. I have a bike.. And now one of these cleaners. And can't wait to clean my chain.
@@aidaan5393 have you used it? How well did it work?
Great vid. Super helpful. My bike chain is now so silent and smooth again!!!
Very informative and helpful to a new biker like me. It thought me how to clean my bike chains. Thank you!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How’s the riding going buddy?
love this series. very useful good job guys
THANKS your video helped me out very much! first time cleaning my chain using the Park Tool
Tool works very well. Really noticed the difference in the chain. Good as new.
Thank you for posting this video, Very Helpful
LOL the chain in the before shot looks like my chain *after* I clean it.
HAHAAHHA
Same :(

Thanks guys for a great vid, much appreciated. Another tool I can buy, love my tools. Big hi from Australia!
After solvent and washing water, I use a kettle of boiling water, poured over the chain while I back pedal. This gets rid of the last of the solvent and washing water, while helping the chain dry quicker. I get ride of any water by using GT85, which also ensures penetration of lube.
Now all I need is a repair stand.
If you are in Europe, ocaionally Lidl has them for less than 40€
Lol
I just turned my bike upside down
@@quezmiz736 King
either upside down on some cardboard to prevent scratching seat and handlebars, or get a workmate (sawhorse) and weigh it down, i use 35lb weights, then using the clamp and a couple hockey sticks, prop the bike up and boom, you have your own functional bike stand. sure it’s no articulating stand and it doesn’t hold the front tire off the ground, but it’s worked for 20+ bikes and still has yet to fail me. or a third hand to hold up the back tire works as well, just make sure to pay them good if you take that route
Good video with useful tips!
Hello, good to see your videos subtitled in Spanish, keep it that way. Greetings from Peru
Had your video playing in the background while degreasing my chain today for the first time! Thanks for the easy instructions
very nice video .... worked to me thanks ! I ride just on weekends ... i do this process every monday morning !
Wow this one was so awesome
OMG - I've never noticed the 2 holes on the top to fill the tool, what an idiot I am
Also thought that is no point to use it without the water, but never thought to fill it with water... not smart either...
Thank you so much !!! :)
great video!
very nice procedure
Awesome. Thanks.
Great video. I think hitting the chain with 1. Solvent degreaser, 2. Soapy water w/Oxyclean, then 3. 70% Rubbing Alcohol, drying completely, then lubing with the correct wet/dry lube is the way to go. Emphasis on wiping off all the excess lube! Too much lube is possibly worse than not enough, due to the dirt it can collect.
This video help me alot wauw its really not that hard. Everbody can do this thanks guy
Fantastic video good job
That oil dropper nozzle should be smaller to release just a dab oil. In this video too much is dispensed and drips off onto the floor.
Nah it’s fine I like a good coating.
Thats how you sell more oil...duh. Lol.
appreciate this guys 👏
Completely soothing ✨💐🥰
This is a must, saves so much effort when cleaning the bike.
It really does, I have a cheap one but it's also very helpful. You also get a brush for cleaning inbetween the gears. Costs a penny and is also very helpful.
Clean bike is definitely a happy bike.😎👍
Hands down best way to clean. Esp as a novice
Great video.
Gotta love those tool names
good stuff thank yiu
TIP : If you want to make cleaning more efficient 1.apply solvent on the chain. Clean the dirt, then loose the chain from all the rotors, clean the rotors first then the chain.
i love this video from 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Nice video. I have a CM-5.2 and it works well on my 11 speed chain. Unfortunatelly i also have an 8 speed bike and the CM-5.2 does not work so good on that. The brushes get stuck on the chain rollers and many end up being cut off by the chain :( what can i do?
Thanks!
Awesome & Thanks :)
In a million years I’d never be able to get a wheel off as easy as that.
Mind you I haven’t got a stand.
Anyway.
Great detailed and tip filled video.
Yes cycle good clean 👍👍👍
Park tool is a good physical design but it recycles dirty fluid. Muc off version uses clean fluid from a top feed but it feels sparingly. But I think if you combine the build quality of the park and the top feed of the muc off that would be the best design
I've never seen a mechanic lube each roll like that. And I've worked in many shops. Think I'm gonna give one of these a shot though.
@@Bungle2010 exactly ☝️😂
Here's a tip to speed up lubrication of the chain, use a paintbrush dipped in lube. It really works the lube in well and uses a minimal amount.
Been getting into some 'amateur' bike repair this summer and I can't tell you how annoying it is finding a bike that someone gobbed up with a heavy weight automotive grease. You get dirtier from a single touch of the chain than anything else you repair on the bike. Found that brake cleaner works best to cut through that sort of grease buildup.
Grease is best product for chain
i literally wipe my drivetrain down after every ride, using fresh dry lube (the "carrier" for the teflon fluoropolymer also acts as a cleaning agent) a clean rag and two toothbrushes duct taped together , takes about 15 minutes to do the cassette, chain, jocky wheels, and chainring... my drive train stays as new ... saves a lot of wear and tear as well as a nasty greasy mess
Are you saying that you dry lube thr chain after each ride? I do wipe down the cassette, chain, etc. after each ride but don't lube the chain.
@@andrewbarker1686 yep ... the "carrier" for the teflon fluoropolymer also acts as a cleaning agent
@@flyingtiger4991, thank you. Which dry lube do you use? Do you just put the dry lube on a rag and rub it into the chain etc.? Sorry for all the questions but I would like to try this. As I mentioned before I clean the chain and cassette after each ride but feel like I am stripping the lube off the chain when I do so.
@@andrewbarker1686 no need for sorry bruv ... we exchange techniques and ideas , that's how we try and experience different stuff to see what works best for our own purposes ... finish line dry lube , the 2 oz. bottle has a nice spray nozzle ... hose the chain , scrub with tooth brushes (see Seth's bike hacks for how to make the duct tape two brush tool) ... wipe off the excess with a clean(ish) towel , let dry ... hit it after every ride ... it will appear shiny and shift "as new" on every ride
I just got one of those chain cleaner tools and I can't believe how stupid I was doing it without one. Money well spent.
I have this kit and similar brushes and hub, it worked great, chain it much cleaner than the way I did it back in the day, I also think its easier. I like to take good care of my mt. bike as I don't like to break down on the trail or have shifting issues. I use Simply Green and it seem to do the job and the cost is low. I am not sure on what the best lube is through?
They say soaking in parafin wax is the very best chain lube, and it's more inexpensive than the oil-based lube. If you want a video let me know and I'll provide one.
rock 'n' roll gold
@@mctg9043 thanks
I always had good results just putting ISO Dry in the chain cleaner. lol. Anhydrous isopropyl. Run it through twice. It dries in like 2 minutes. Then lube with some sort of dry chain lube

Hi....I just picked up this chain cleaner. Using it for the first time, I had some bristles come off on the chain, is this normal first time?
how do you separate the solvent on top to reuse it.?
Which model of Park Bicycle repair stand are you using?
do I need to change the fluid after every chain cleaning in my cm25? I have 5 bikes. thx
nice
He wipes the chain off way too soon. Instead, backpedal for at least 1-2 minutes. As the rollers pass over the cogs and jockey wheels, they'll rotate slightly within the chain and that will help draw the new lube into where it needs to be inside the roller. Wipe off then repeat a few hours later on a freshly cleaned chain.
Note to self
1. Degrease with c4
2. Run through with soapy water
3. Grease
I always forget #2
I already bought a gallon of Simple Green, does that work very well?
Sweet can’t wait! All I need is a bike…
There are e-bikes with chains that cannot been turned backwards. In that case remove the handle of the Park Tool Chain cleaner and turn the tool so that the place where the handle usually is mounted faces the frame of the bike. Now you can turn the chain forward and the tool is as useful as it is for normal bikes. I do it like that and I am very happy and my chain is easily cleaned.
Damn e bikes can't do anything right
Or use the proper tool to block the drivetrain in order to rotate the chain backwards:
czcams.com/video/eOPr8dWi2GQ/video.html
Good tip. Never thought of doing it that way. Thanks!
Lol, proper tool.. you mean a stick?
Everyone owns a Allen key right? Now you can back pedal your e-bike on a stand.
Great video! do you recommend using wax lube on road bike chains or should one be looking at other lubes?
This is probably three years too late but waxing a chain should be fine for road bikes. Although the process is much more tedious than using regular chain lube and requires removing the chain every 300km you ride
@@alihaleem8264 I believe wax lubes attract more crap than light oils. I wud use light sewing machine oil or similar and be done with it
My chain is 10 years I still use it until now
Is there a chain cleaner that will twist the chain while cleaning it, instead of simply running it straight? There is dirt between the links where they jntersect, you can see it @ 3:36
do i need a c02z1 rag or a special e46hj rag,or the delux 01yw58883 rag,or just a rag?
do you have to pop off the back wheel to clean the chain - new rider thanks
Hi, i have a question, if my chain is rusty, i have to change it or i still can to clean it ?
Get the metal body CM25. It's pricey but unless you do something stupid to it you'll never have to buy another one, only on rare occasion have to replace components. The plastic scrubbers work but eventually develop cracks. Put a magnetic strip or a small magnet in the bottom to pick up metallic particles - the CM 5.2 has a magnet built in.
Didn't know Daniel Bryan from WWE was so passionate about chain cleaning!!
🤣🤣
Thanks for another awesome video Park Tool! I tried this for the first time today with this video on beside me for reference, and it worked like a dream! 🤩
Can I ask a quick question please off the back of this?
Would it do any harm to leave the rear wheel on while cleaning? I guess that removing the wheel makes it easier to clean a full cassette etc (and maybe keep disc brake components away from splashes too?), but I was doing this on a single speed with a 17th hub and wasn't sure if it was totally necessary? My bike does have disc brakes but I used a Muc-Off covers to sheild them before I started cleaning the chain.
Thanks a lot and best wishes!
Gavin
I use Tool Chain cleaner ( different brand ) , chain last longer , about 4 k miles/per year , and its very silent. I use it twice a week
Highly recomm.
What a total waste of resources and time. Even if you live in a salty area that is way too much.
hey, I've seen you around the comments and it looks like you don't belong in the biking community. For you i suggest going over to PETA and other climate change/eco sites. You'll feel much more happy there.
park tool, can you change to all gears straight after lubricating the chain, or let it work for 1 hour and then change to all gears?
👌👌👌
Neat. I have none of these things. Where’s the Russian blog that will show me how to do this with tide and a toothbrush? FML
А у меня есть. Вот только реально удобно пользоваться только на даче. В квартире не вариант. Всё засрёшь только. И он говорит о компрессоре - только в условиях СВОЕГО гаража и т.п. Отдайте в мастерскую - вам начистят как следует.
So what chain cleaner, lube, degreaser and chain cleaner can I get cheap on Amazon ?
when talks about solvent, does he mean the degreaser? so first run it 30 revs through degreaser, then repeat with regular dish soap water?
also what's the difference between the CM 5.2 or CM 25 ? I got the CM 5.2 without knowing there might be differences i may have to watch out for.
Great video, but what’d y’all do with Calvin!?!?
Back in the day my father actually cooked his motorcycle chain in motor oil. Can I do the same with my bike chain?
I maintain my bike by always keeping it dirty
I maintain my bike by always leaving it out in the rain.
I maintain my bike by locking it inside a dusty warehouse.
I maintain my bike by letting it soak in sea water.
I maintain my bike by peeing on it
I maintain it by letting sit all winter with the wheels off while waiting for parts
If i clean chain often can i use cooking oil?
I have a electric bike/moped, and I wanted to know how will I know when to replace my bikes drive train ?
But, how do one clean the chain cleaner?
mnyheim you buy a park tool chain cleaner cleaner
mnyheim a good quality one can go in the dishwasher
but how to clean the park tool chain cleaner cleaner?
Entering Park Tool CCCCM-5.2 chain cleaner cleaner for chain cleaner.
You have to guy the park tool chain cleaner cleaner cleaner.
If you wanna clean that, than...
You cant.
What's the general consensus about using Simple Green in the CM25 Chain Cleaner to clean the chain instead of Park Tool solvent?
Park Tools says "No" lol
Use diesel fuel - it cleans the chain, and lubricates it at the same time.
Thank you, I have done this a few times with this video. Why spin all backwards, there must be a reason?
the lower section on chain is being pulled directly by the chainring when pedaling backwards. When pedaling forwards the bottom section of chain will be routed through the rear derailleur so it will be pulled forward due to the derailleur.
My chain falls off when I pedal backwards. Any help? Thanks
I’d say it’s better to leave the wheel on that way when lubing the chain, backpedal to get the excess lube into the cassette.
I tried for the first couple of years with my latest bike (I have only owned and ridden a single bike at a time)... to keep it clean and shiny all the time, immaculate. I obsessed over the chain to the point of cleaning it during rides. This is all while averaging over 7K miles a year, 20 to 120 mile rides year around. That means for me, living in the Pacific Northwest, 4 to 6 months of riding in the rain and on muddy wet surfaces. I have a Rohloff Speedhub mounted on a full-suspension touring bike coupled to a BBSHD mid-drive and it's amazing. It's broken me to ever owning another bike without a Rohloff. The mid-drive and the Speedhub are made for each other, they go together like lamb and tuna fish. @ The 1st year I rode I changed the chain 8 times... whenever it got to 0.5% wear as tested with a Park tool. After another 25K miles and 4 years riding I now wipe the chain clean daily and swap my chains every 6 months. Drop the chain, flip or replace the Rohloff gear, mount a new chain, and ride. Always having a straight chain line makes it amazingly easy to maintain.

One word OCD
@@zeez9053 Do you even realize how stupid that... attempt at a sentence is Ms. Anonymous?
Ebikes I understand can't move chain back pedal. Can I use chain cleaner tool forward motion? What was the purpose of backward motion in video?
If you flip the bike upside down you can use the CM-5.2 as the bike is being pedaled forward. Stay tuned tho....
I take the chain off and put it in degreaser and then clean the rest of the drive train. Then rinse the chain and hang it to let it dry overnight
Need to make a video for a gill hubs with free Wheels you need to do videos on three wheel trike bikes on tricycles on tricycle apparel
Does anyone have any real-numbers on what this can do to extend a roadbike's chain mileage to (referencing something like a CC-3 gauge)? I mean, that chain in this video looked like a timing chain out of a 1964 buick - with baked on grease. From installing a chain, I use a good chain lube, my bike never sees off-road or rain (I live in the desert), and I can get a consistent 2k miles on a chain before 'stretch' overtakes me (cassettes on every 2nd chain). How does 'chain cleaning' actually benefit me, when you couldn't tell one of my old 2k mile chains from a new in-box, until you put a gauge on it?
Ur chain isnt stretching, is dirt and grit wearing out the roller and connecting pins. Keeping the chain religiously clean will probably double the life of it and increase.thenlife of the cassette too.
What kind of soap is safe to use when you go over it again after the degreaser?
I wud think regular detergent same as u wash ur dishes as u just wants to wash away the solvent. Rinse it well with clean water then let dry b4 adding the oil
methalated spirits is much cheaper than park tool degreaser and works very well
How to use the wheel sickle hook?
You said that i should shift to the smallest cog on the front and back. But won't this put stress on the chain and damage the drive chain ?
There is effectively no stress at all as the pedals are turned backward. Chains can easily handle this.
Hola!!
