💪 DIY RV Slide Floor Support // Prevention

  • The rollers on our large RV slide are starting to dig into the wooden slide floor. The floor is not rotten but we wanted to add some additional support to prevent future problems with the RV slide floor. We have already had this floor replaced twice due to washer/drain leakage that caused the floor to rot.

    Another great video! I am in the process of installing rollers on our dining/living room slide since the wear bar (think 2" piece of plastic) is now digging into the Darco (think Tyvek house wrap) vapor barrier. I have already installed slide skis on it but the Darco still drags on the wear bar in the middle of the slide so I am installing rollers this weekend. That should aid the slide skis and get some weight off of them. I read some specs somewhere that these slide-outs up to 12' in length can weigh upwards of 800 pounds. That's crazy of these RV manufacturers to think that much weight can glide along a sheet of Darco and a piece of plastic. In Dave and Karen's case with their slide-out housing a washer & dryer and the bed, that slide-out has to weigh upwards of 1000 lbs.

    Great video guys! I recently replaced our slide floor, the same one as yours, because it rotted out. I too used marine grade plywood, but I put white "Formica" on the underside instead of paint. I was told by James, @azexpert, that the Formica would not hold up in this situation, so I put "runners" like you did. I used 14ga stainless, I know, overkill, but it is nice and solid. And with it being stainless, I did not paint them. The paint would just be another wear item. I had the steel custom cut to 10"x30" so that they would go all the way under each roller with no step. I saw this done as standard on the underside of a Tiffin slide. That's what gave me the idea to add the metal. Hopefully I will never have to replace this floor again. I am now more diligent with the caulking in that area. Well, all areas. Thanks for sharing your videos. The whole floor replacement project would be valued as a keg of beer if you were to do it yourself.😉🍺🍻

Was there ever a thought to butt it up to the rollers and then butt a small piece up to the 3"-4" to the end of the sheet metal & that would be missing at the West end ? I did the same thing about two years ago. I used an aluminum sheet and it works but is too soft and is cupping just a bit where the rollers ride. If you added a short piece from the end of your original steel that was just a bit thinner and pushed it between the roller and the floor you decrease the stress as it hits all of those edges. I had to jack up the slide just a bit to slip it under there, not a problem. ( probably a 3 beer ). You're doing great work.

  • @brianclemens2707
    @brianclemens2707 Před rokem +2

    Dave, you need stainless steel on the slide bottoms. I did my Landmark the first month I had it. Used stainless fasteners too. Silicone the whole underside to prevent any water ingress and rot. I jacked up the side and slide the stainless higher over the rollers so they stay on steel all the time.

    Dave, when we purchased our DRV Estate, the bottom of the bedroom floor with washer/dryer was rotten enough that you could push up on floor with your hand and see it move. We found out about Interstate RV up in Indiana and had a new floor put in. There is 1 inch of plywood and teflon for the floor which is sold by DRV as a kit. Easy fix when you know what to do. The cause is the trim around the slide in the form of a picture frame. The caulk starts to crack and then the water penetrates the floor and rots it out. I like what you did, but do not like the fact that the slide has a little issue with coming out at that difference in height. I would also worry that you did change the height of the slide now and you may have a leak somewhere else. I would make sure that there are no issues with the seal all the way around that slide. Just for giggles sake! Take care and see you down the road!

    • @WattsOnWheels
      @WattsOnWheels  Před rokem

      We actually had the seals replaced last year. We checked the height change and have plenty of room...no leaks. We have had Indiana Interstate replace that slide twice and the kitchen slide once as well. I plan to swap out the metal for longer pieces in the future to prevent the hop.

    I like it except for that little "hop" it has to do when coming in. You could see the slide hesitate for just a fraction of a second. What about adding thin strips on that end to maybe 3 of them, every other 1, so it's not taking the full lift of all 6 at once?
