  • Road Test: 1998 SEAT Ibiza GTI Cupra Sport
The Giugiaro-designed Mk2 SEAT Ibiza was released in 1993.
We're featuring the GTI Cupra Sport model which was powered by a 2.0 8v engine.
It uses the same VW A03 platform as the Cordoba, Polo Mk3, Caddy Van etc. as well as the Mk2 Golf GTi suspension.
    Looks:
The SEATs styling is typical of the late 90's, the slab-sided bodywork is smooth but one could argue a little dull.
Inside, the VW connection is highly evident with the Polo instrument panel and switch gear. The lack of passenger airbag means the instrument panel can sit much closer to the bulkhead. This in turn makes the interior feel quite spacious, you soon forget that you're in a car that's a only a few mm larger than the new Fiat 500.
    Driving:
The seats grip well yet provide comfort on long journeys, unfortunately the same can't be said for the steering wheel due to its lack of reach adjustment.
The little SEAT provided a lot more entertainment on its test drive than expected:- get enthusiastic around the bends and the Ibiza will lift a rear wheel with ease, try the same trick in the wet and you'd better be ready to catch the oversteer!
This particular car is in need of a new set of engine mounts, currently the engine rocks too much making the low speed drivability poor.
    Stats:
    Power: 115bhp
    Weight: 1,045kg
    0-60mph: 9.4secs
    Top Speed: 123mph
    Costs:
This particular Ibiza was bought for £300! Factor in tyres that cost £30 a corner and an average mpg in the high 30's and you begin to understand that there is quite a lot of bang for your buck!
