    I installed a Pioneer Head Unit in my XTerra. The cool thing is that you can change the splash screen, so I put a Nissan screen on it, and it has color schemes, so I was able to change it to orange and it matches the instrument panel. It honestly looks like it came with the XTerra. I ran my backup camera to that and it works great.

    Whew, after watching that I'm going underneath the car, to the firewall and then through a grommet somewhere there, then to the back of the new radio. I'll encase the wire in some of that black plastic wire loom that is split down the side the whole way and ribbed. Ty rap it as I move forward. This is in a 2010 Xterra. I did something similar to run power back to a connector for a powered winch to pull my boat onto it's trailer on my '04 Chevy Blazer. It was easy to attach it to some existing wiring heading back to the rear. I'll route it over near the rear tail light to pick up the back up light power, then head south down to bottom of the car and move forward. I don't want to take all those panels apart inside.

Does that button in the middle shut off the monitor? the reason I ask is because I pull a trailer sometimes but can't see it out my back window. Sharky B yes, you could also have multiple inputs on that monitor. So you could mount a camera higher. Maybe inside behind the window and you can switch sources when you want to see the trailer and back to the first source when you want to use a backup camera.

    What color is the reverse wire?

    • @mickcarson8504
      @mickcarson8504 Před 6 lety

      Hello. Don't worry about what color is the wire. The best you can do is to buy a cheap 12 V pinch tester. It has one wire with an alligator clip at the end of the wire and a tester with a pin pointed tip to punch a hole in the wires no bigger than a pin hole. The tester has a 12 V light inside. Clamp the alligator clip to an exposed metal, bolt head of unpainted part of the car chassis. If you're in the US, the wires going to the tail lights are generally to the right of the tail lights. If you're elsewhere, such as SA, AU, NZ, etc., the tail lights wires (bundles) are on the real left. Access to these wires is a little complicated, as you have to remove most of the plastic trims. You remove first the rear bottom panel, then the top trim (you need further assistance on this). Then (apply the hand brakes), turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine and put the gear in reverse. The reverse lights should be coming on. With a small, powerful LED torch and a small mirror, see if you can trace the wires leading to each tail light cluster from inside the chassis gaps. You should be able to tell which wire goes to the reverse light. Note the color and then prick the wire insulation with the pin pointed part of the tester and see if the light inside the tester glows. If it glows, have someone to disengage the reverse and return to Park (automatic) or Neutral (both automatic and manual gearbox). If the light goes out, that's the live wire for the reverse lights. To connect the reverse camera red wire, you can splice the reverse light wire and join the camera red wire (it's usually red) with either wrapping it around of add a clip connector by placing the two wires into two slots that strip the insulation when the other half is pressed firmly above it. These clamp connectors are sold from car accessory shops. In some cases, such as cameras installed on the tail gates above the licence plates, you have to direct both the video and power cable through the tailgate frame. But, like I said, in some cases, the video cable already has the two RCA connectors on each end. One connector has to be cut off so that it can be inserted and transferred through the tight spot in the tailgate window frame because it has to go to the tailgate through that flexible rubber hose that protects the wires going to the tailgate for the rear window washer/wiper, licence light, etc. You must first insert a 2 mm plastic coated solid wire with the end bent like a squashed hook to facilitate easy flow through the openings without punching or jamming into tight spots. Gently push the wire through that top grommet hole of the tailgate and down alongside the window frame of the tailgate. You have to remove the two bolts that hold the tailgate handle on the inside and then pull out the trim to expose the openings of the tailgate. Next, depending on whether it is a right hand drive or left hand, carefully peel off the plastic sheet stuck on the tailgate shell with a black sticky gum. Only need to peel off half of that plastic so that you can work inside the tailgate. So, once you have peeled the plastic sheet, It's time to guide the camera wires by taping the camera's red/black wire to the plastic coated 2 mm wire that you inserted earlier with a strong sticky tape. Do not make the tape too thick or it may not fit inside certain passages. Pull the solid wire and help the camera's wire to flow through the tailgate channel. Once it has reached the upper end, pull out about 6-8 inches and separate the wires. Next, insert the 2 mm plastic coated wire in the lower grommet and work its way towards the upper grommet of the flexible rubber hose/wire protector. Knead the hose sideways and note the flow of the wire through it, as there is limited room after you've inserted all the camera wires, so be careful not to punch the rubber hose. Once the plastic coated solid wire exits at the top end of the other grommet, re-tape the camera wire with the solid wire. Make sure it is not too thick but have a strong bond so that it doesn't separate when you pull the wires down through the tube (the flexible hose), After pulling the camera wire out, separate it from the plastic coated solid wire and then pull with one hand down and the other hand align the camera wire so that it continues to enter the hose flush and without any kinks. Re-insert the plastic coated wire through the tailgate grommet hole and guide it all the way down the tailgate. Nonce the tip has reached the bottom, tape the cut end of the video cable (you must cut the end to remove the connector or it will not fit inside the grommet and the flexible rubber hose), Make sure that the take can hold the video wire to the plastic coated solid wire but do not make it too thick. Now, gently pull the solid wire to pull the video wire to the top and through the hole. Once it has exited, pull about 8-10 inches further and leave it. Re-insert the solid wire through the bottom grommet of the flexible hose all the way up, kneading and being carefully you do not use force because the solid wire can easily punch a hole, and you don't want that to happen and invite rain water in. So, when the solid wire has exited at the top end of the rubber hose, pull about 5-6 inches and then re-tape the video wire to it, making sure it is not going to separate but do not make a thick bind or it will not fit through the rubber hose. Then, pull down the solid wire and as you do, make sure you give a bit of squeeze, nudge and knead and, at the same time, straighten the video wire as it is being pulled in. When done, guide all the wires through the lower grommet hole and through the inner hole inside the rear column where the other wires are and going down along the column, except the solid wire which now you have finished with it. The next part is, reconnecting the video wire by solder. This is a delicate job that requires skill. So, unless you're in this type of project, ask and I'll help. And, finally, we go back to finding the reverse lights wire to connect the red to live and black to a firm chassis ground. My camera is placed under cover below the Pathfinder name and above the licence plate. Perfect height. installed on the bumper bar, the video seen is too low. so, unless you have the time and patience, the best you can to for a better viewing angle and height, is to install it higher so that it covers a greater area. A reminder, this also applies to the installation of dash cams. Hope this helps. Cheers.

      If you can't figure it out based on his extremely detailed instructions and showing you how to do the only real tricky parts then I'm sorry you really shouldn't be doing any wiring on a car. It can potentially be dangerous and cause fires if done wrong. Just do yourself a favor and take it to Best buy and have them do it.
