  • In The Crown Season 4 Episode 9, Princess Diana and Prince Charles have been called in to speak to The Queen and Prince Philip about the state of their marriage. When asked whether they want their marriage to work, Charles and Diana have seemingly opposing views.
The score playing sounds like 'War' by Martin Phipps, found in 'The Crown: Season Four (Soundtrack from the Netflix Original Series)'

I like he shut him up too... But that was part of the problem in the first place. This marriage took place because no one respected the feelings involved and basically told everyone else to suck it up. While Charles is a jerk, all parties had a part in the downfall.

@@rachelsunqvist6430 I think you hit an important point here. It's worth remembering that his family pushed him hard into marrying her, even when he started having doubts. They also utterly ignored Diana when she tried to bring up her doubts to them. These two are in this scene doing what they have always done, only listened to to what they wanted to hear and then ignored or shut down anything that isn't what they want to hear. While Charles may be a spoiled brat, he still has the right to say he wants to leave a marriage he is unhappy with. Honestly that is a right that everyone should have. Honestly It would have been better for literally everyone involved had they at least let him say his peace. Even if he's being selfish, petty, whiny, spoiled, etc, allowing only one half of the marriage to speak at what essentially is a marriage intervention is a really terrible idea.

Charles was not jealous of Diana as some are claiming in here. He was furious. He thought this would be the moment of liberation at last for him, in which both would make clear to the queen that the marriage was a failure and had to end. He had written his set of demands for the separation and his plans were destroyed when Diana said that she wanted to save the marriage. For him, her (correct) decision was an atrocious insolence and mistake. It destroyed any chance of freedom for him.
Now, regarding the queen and her husband’s focus on Diana and not on Charles: they are not stupid. It’s not like they think that Diana was to be blamed for everything. It’s because they knew that Charles would just complain and blame others and try the easy way out. When they saw Diana stepping in and making the correct call the royal couple saw best to ignore Charles and “force” him (by shaming him implicitly) into accepting Diana’s decision to save the marriage.

I love how well-crafted Phillip and Diana's relationship was in this show. They really captured the nuance of the two of them being outsiders together. I liked the subtext there, of how Phillip was always so supportive of her because he understood the strain of being the consort of a future monarch.
Since watching Season 4, I've been under the impression that the foundation of Phillip's support of Diana was that unique understanding of her struggle (which he also faced early on, having to fight for his right to do anything and having to push to be heard) as well as a deeply rooted disdain for Charles' constant over-emotional whining. While he lucked out by marrying The Queen, who always tried her best to make him feel useful in his role and gave him opportunities, Diana had the misfortune of marrying a narcissistic, self-involved priss. I like to think Phillip gave her his support so that he could help her feel validated by someone, anyone, because he knew what it felt like to need that at one point and he knew that Charles simply wasn't capable of giving her that.

Even in another episode Elizabeth tells him that NO ONE cares about what he has to say, not the country and not his family. No wonder he ignored Diana after this, he clearly wasn't happy, he never was. This whole conversation is so shallow. No marriage can recover with just a 5 minute conversation. People try to say Diana was very naive and didn't knew what she was doing or that he loved, the truth is this is all fiction and it's an interpretation of what might have happened, but history has told us that royal marriages to an prince or princess of Wales has always been very transactional and that both parties knew it, I'm sure that as young as Diana was she knew what she would get from it and her family also, in the series her grandma evens says her stay at Balmoral is the most important moment in her life, also the scene where she "meets" the queen in Buckingham palace is so inaccurate in portraying her as if she didn't knew how to address them, her family was no stranger to aristocracy, since her father was a Duke and they even knew the royal family from renting houses in their states

Wait a minute. I mean I despise Charles for all the abuse he inflicted upon Diana but it absolutely wasn't right to say "to say what? What more there is to say?" because even though Charles's voice is an irritating one you can't make a marriage work if only one side wants it to! It's dumb not to let Charles say his piece - I mean he is unhappy, prepared notes or letter or lists or whatever because he is 100% certain he doesn't want this marriage to work. So ignoring him makes no sense because it only prolongs the inevitable while hurting Diana even harder. I get that everyone hates Charles but for fuck sakes we're talking about HIS marriage. He gets a vote in his marriage. He is certain and prepare for ending this relationship yet he is denied the chance to speak. How is that in anyway right or fair? To him or Diana? It's an absolute horror and Philip (who also dislikes Charles lol) made an awful comment that can do no good in the long run. Basically Elizabeth and Philip are experimenting on humans and Diana is the subject. When Diana came to Elizabeth to ask for help she was denied. So was Charles. Yet they insist that the marriage goes on despite it hurting everyone involved. I mean Charles is an abuser. Why would you like to trap the victim even longer with the abuser? Just... no.

Of course after such "altruistic", "forgiving", "inspiring" speech you can not say anything, and that's a trap. They're intentionally forcing him into a situation where he has to oblige with their intent and incapable of refusal, because by saying anything otherwise, he would be a "mean" and "bad" dude.
Despite those speeches, Diana never means what she says, otherwise she would be doing it instead of talking it. This is just an act to cover the whole thing and to deny responsibility for both sides.
The supervisor criticize, the employee say they're sorry, both goes along but nothing changes. The stagnation of progress.
Charles in the end ask whether he has a voice is not a question, it's a complaint. He's asking them,
"Are you intentionally forcing me into doing this, despite knowing it's all fake and I'll continue to suffer?",
and these "royalties" answered straight to his face.
"Yes, we are asking you to do that, now shove it."
    Very royal-like.

She wanted to make the marriage work through the end but the saddest part of that was, she was the only side between the two of them, who was willing to make an enormous effort, while Charles, being Charles, was completely taken by Carmilla at this point. On the famous interview, (You can search it on youtube) Diana stated that she didn't want to have the divorce, because in her perspective, she knew so well, the pain of coming from a divorced family background. She loved him earnestly though it wasn't enough to keep him and their marriage alive. Being "unwanted" by the same man who married you, who you let be the father of your children, who you loved and loved to the point of depression...it is, a dreadful feeling and experience. As much as I understand and feel sorry for Diana, I also feel sorry for Charles who was forced to marry someone he did like but with a broken heart of not spending his life with the one he really loves. His soul was forced to love someone else, then his soul started hating the mother of his sons. We cant force anyone to love. I do believe he like Diana, but she was always so obsessed over him, obsessed by the idea of having his attention.... she did feel sorry for being in between Charles and Camilla, she knew he was still in love with Camilla but like she said several times and I agree with her that Camilla was the one harassing Charles. As soon as Charles had eyes on some girls, Camilla would contact him back. Camilla was already married, Charles had started to move on by going out with many girls, but Camilla kept contacting him in between.
Did Camilla love Charles? Yes of course, but she was very selfish for not respecting herself, her own marriage, her kids and Charles' marriage. As for Charles, he was way too immature and underestimate himself to not be able to respect his own marriage.
The royal should have try to stop Camilla to contact Charles. I guess saying the royal family have killed Diana is plain wrong, otherwise for the sake of Charles marriage they would have killed Camilla way before William comes in thid world. The royal cannot control everything and everyone. They have duties. Yes they are very powerful, but not to the point of wanting to erase people's life, they could but the Queen rather consult her family and doesnt mind other people's marriages or families business'.

Philipp in particular was said to have taken his frustration out on his sons about always having to walk three steps behind his wife and being subordinate to her.

People want to be sympathetic to diana but she destroyed men's careers by having affairs several of whom were married themselves. Meanwhile Charles is still with the woman he had an affair with to this day.

Wasn’t Camilla married as well? Same discourse goes for Charles then.
The difference is that Diana loved Charles with all her heart despite the hell he put her through since she was 19. Had he been a faithful husband, she would have never thought of laying eyes somewhere else. And she realized her mistake, stopped having affairs and tried once again to make the marriage work, yet he didn’t. What would you have done in her place?

It would have been the kind thing to do in response to Diana's apology. They are both culpable. But Charles has clearly conflicting views here. He's somewhat touched by Diana's fear of his possible death in the avalanche. But he's also angry at her because he walked in with his list of demands for a separation, but knows he won't be able to present them after Diana's speech. He knows his parents don't actually want them to divorce, and he just lost his playing hand in the discussion, so to speak.

'The Crown' should reflect reality. King Charles III's first marriage was a tragic mistake, yet monarchy shouldn't be used as real-life soap opera.
The achievement of the British monarchy should become clear in comparison with the histories of other countries. In the 19th & 20th centuries the U.S.A, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Spain and Greece suffered in various ways civil wars, political storms, and dictatorships. This shows what can go wrong in the absence of a head of state which is above politics, and which opposes illegal dictatorship. If there are many reasons England, Wales, and Scotland have had no civil war since Culloden in 1746, having a constitutional monarchy to unify all the people is an important reason. In the UK, 'peace' in formal speech is "The King's Peace".
Of course Prince Philip could be tactless, and he & Elizabeth II made mistakes as parents. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the unity the monarchy gives in the UK & the world. By stabilizing Britain & the commonwealth (e.g. Canada & Australia), it promotes peace in the world. The sea around it didn't protect the U.S.A. against civil war in the 1860s, and the UK could have suffered civil war over slavery in the 19th century; likewise over world war, loss of empire, economic failure, or race in the 20th. There will always be violence and political problems in the world, and billions of people who know or understand nothing of the British monarchy and the stability it brings. Since the 1700s, billions of people have lived under the British crown without civil war, lynching, dictatorship in their lives. God save King Charles III, and his successors.

Not really. Diana's wishes dovetailed with what the Queen and Prince Phillip want, which is the end of hostilities between Charles and Diana and an attempt to make the marriage work. That's why they are responding to what she's saying.
