The album came out in '77. I believe they're in their late 20's. Explain how they could have possibly known that album reference. I'm lucky I know, and I'm only slightly older than them. Not knowing every Pink Floyd reference in pop culture, obvious or not, doesn't need a "kids these days" statement. Also, vinyls are outselling CDs for the first time in 30+ years, so "the time of vinyl" isn't over just because it isn't the only way to get music these days.

This is by far the most underrated sci-fi film of all time. It’s exceptional. The original novel was written by my favorite cozy-mystery author, P.D. James (if you like Agatha Christie, you’ll LOVE James). This novel was a really different one for James, but it’s excellent as per. The film is a perfect translation of the original story. One of my fave details in this movie is in the very beginning, when the reason he gives to his boss for why he wants to leave work isn't because he was almost in a bombing, but because Baby Diego died. He knew which excuse would be more believable. The other shot I love is when Kee first reveals her pregnancy and she's standing amid a bunch of dairy cows talking cutting off udders. It's pretty telling that the reveal is surrounded by a visual reminder of the way humans will essentially torture these poor animals to get what we want from their bodies. Not exactly a subtle metaphor, but a brilliant one.

Fun Fact: This film came out on December 25th, 2006. The title comes from Psalm 90. Also, the name Theo is, of course, derived from the Greek word for God (theos). So Kee gives birth to the God-baby that will save humanity. Her pregnancy reveal happens in a barn/manger. The rebel group is called the "Fishes." The fish was a common symbol in early Christianity.

I believe we'll see more, as it's a real threat right now. Worldwide sperm counts have dropped by more than half since 1973, with the rate accelerating since 2000.
While sperm count isn't the sole predictor of fertility (motility is the big one), it can cause delay in conception. So yeah, since films generally reflect the times we're living in, I imagine more writers and directors are going to tackle this.

  • @bobbyclarkston8836
    @bobbyclarkston8836 Před rokem +7

The point of the illegality of avoiding fertility tests has to do with many things. First, people want to avoid them because they feel it’s no one’s business but their own if they can get pregnant; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and all that but it would also be seen as your civic duty to become a baby factory since fertility is nearly nonexistent. God knows what the government would do with you if they knew about you. A suspension of your civil liberties for the greater good would be only the start.

It's not a 2006 concept, as the novel was written in 1992, by PD James. It was a one off for her as her main focus was the detective novels featuring her character Adam Dalgliesh, this was her only Sci fi story, written when she was in her seventies. Essentially the societal collapse because if there is no future what is the point, is hers, though in her version it is the men that are infertile, hence the title. It's a great novel, more of a political thriller than an action film, but then that's the difference in the medium.

06:57 on the guy with the dread locks: I just want to say I was so happy to have that FCUK jacket ack in 2005 and I wore it until it was threadbare. A villain in one of the Bourne movies also wears one.

Not sure if you realized about the building as they are carrying the baby out is called Pierrepoint Tower. The link is to that Albert Pierrepoint was Britain's official hangman for the last 50 years that it was being carried out.

Alfonso Cuarón is such a brilliant director. I'm so excited that you're one step closer to Y Tu Mama Tambien. It's so beautiful and real. So brilliant.

I remember going to see this movie on my birthday and when it ended just sitting there stunned as the sound of those kids at play filled the theater. Meanwhile I can't even remember what movie it was I had watched earlier that day.

Maybe the most underrated movie of all time. Also a big inspiration for Hideo Kojima and the way he filmed MGS5 and told Death Stranding.

You should watch Clive Owen in King Arthur. It has a great supporting cast and is as close to real history as we have gotten.

Should do sci-fi sections. Dystopian, space, time travel,
And for that list I suggest “predestination.”

I loved that of all the scenes you did skip over to fit the DMCA requirement you left in Theo breaking down by the tree after Julianne Moore's character dies. That to me has always been one of the best, most understated scenes in the entire film, really glad you guys seemingly thought so as well. Also, you guys (and anyone else) should absolutely look up the behind the scenes work that went into filming the long take car scene. They had to create a massive rig to be mounted on the car to achieve that long take.

28:38 Which scene in 'Goodfellas' is being referred to? I was under the impression 'Hunger' has one of the most highly-praised one-take scenes although that's static whereas all its rivals will presumably be in motion.

The flying pig is a reference to the album cover of the Pink Floyd's 1977 album ANIMALS. Mostly a Roger Waters' project, the album is a harsh critique of the growing authoritaniism and anti-workers of british politics as brought by Margareth Thatcher's premiership. The influence of that album can be felt throughout the entire film even if no song from it is used.

This movie is in my top 5. From amazing camera work, amazing world-building set design, amazingly terrible premise--what does a species do when it can see it's extinction coming. You both are right that there is some dense imagery in the film that would worth picking apart for meaning. I also love that Clive Owen our narrative focus is in no way some sort of action hero--in fact the only time he does something other than run away is hitting the guy in the doorway. The final big set piece with everyone stopping the fighting gives me chills every time. I'd be upper 9's as well in ratings.
