    Funny enough, another trope that could fit Jack is that of the Black Knight - they too often lacked a master, or chose to hide their master's identity. Given that Jack is, basically, an exiled prince, he, as mentioned, has no master. Also, when first seen in Season 5, he's wearing dark black armor. While associated with more dishonorable types, painting your armor black (or painting it in general) was often a basic method to prevent one's armor from rusting. After all, in many cases, the average knight would have a squire, or some sort of servant, whose job was to maintain the knight's equipment. Given that the average black knight tended to lack even the most basic of servants, painting the armor helped to protect it. Also, on another practical side, black armor was easier to clean, and didn't stain as easily, as Jack's normal white robes. Since Jack's often by himself, armor that's easy to clean off is a good idea, given the environment he deals with.

    This is my opinion, but Jack was suppose to kill Aku and save his world, but was flung to the future, so he had to return to the past to complete what he was ordered to do...
    But he had to behave as a Ronin rather then a Samurai to get home, he had to do things outside of the "order" so in a way... he was indeed a Samurai, but failed, and in turn ended up as a Ronin without realizing it.
    He believes he is a Samurai, and with all knowledge of these things lost in the past and what little information people have about him... he is able to live as a human by not being around those forcing him to be a title.

      can I add that those warrior monks were a Military force using the Shoguns tax dollars to fund a large army while collected more "taxes" from the people living near the village to live morel luxurious lives. Nubunaga launched this attacked after they decalred war on him and killed a close friend of his. on Mt Hei the first monstrosity he burned down it was estimated that 40 000 people were killed however almost everybody who wrote about the account were in kyoto all they would have seen was the mountain an fire so many of the claims that the Dastardly Nubunaga killed them all are somewhat questionable. on top of the an archaeological dig found that there were only about 10 000 corpses all most all of whom were localized at the base of the mountain where the soldiers lived. so when given context not only was the attack completely justified but odds are it was not nearly as bad as people claim.
      Oda Nubunaga is a complex character who I recommend learning about yourself. He was hated for being the antithesis to what a samurai was supposed to be yet he would have been the leader of all of them had things played out a little differently.

    I've always thought that Jack was a sort of divine samurai. To me he's always represented the human ideal in the show, which is why he is established as being well-traveled and skilled in the arts of many cultures. The sword is the symbol of his master - justice. Similar to how King Arthur's sword made him a Knight of the Lord, even though he was an all powerful king the point of his character is his service to his divine master. There's a similar cosmology to Jack's position here. His character is what makes him WORTHY of this divine appointment, for sure, but having a magic sword is basically permission from heaven to go do whatever you want, you're a good person. It's what sets him apart from a Ronan and makes him a true samurai. Season 5 is about his personal journey to return to his master - because he definitely is a Ronan in self exile after losing the sword.

    • @weaverssystem
      @weaverssystem Před 7 lety +1

      @Yakshimara He *was* a samurai, but is not now. (By definition, a ronin is a former samurai.) A dead person cannot be a lord, and so if a samurai's master dies he's ronin unless he can get a new master. Jack never bothered with that step. This is why the death of that one dude led to 300 samurai becoming ronin (leading 47 of them to plot revenge).

    • @Yakshimara
      @Yakshimara Před 7 lety +2

      Yeah, time travel kind of puts him in a feudal-future limbo as far as his status of warrior. In one way of viewing it, unless his father died after Jack comes back to the past, it's presumed as long as there is even one portal in time, he's still a Samurai until there's no possible way at all to reunite with his family. In a way, we're both kind of right. I haven't seen how it ends yet, so this is all speculation as far as I know. If he stays in the future, you're right enough.

    You missed the biggest point in the first episode (I believe it was episode 1 where a trained Jack arrived home to gain his father sword). His father was still alive and the Lord of the land. The quest Jack set out on could be seen as an order from his father, the Lord. When we see Jack again in the current season, one of the faces we see in his self doubt/grief is his father. His father even says "have you forgotten your purpose."
    You could argue that Jack is a samurai and he is serving his father, the current lord. His father sent him on a quest to kill Aku and free his people. Despite being sent to the future, he's been trying to do exactly that. Now you could argue that his noble virtues hinders his samurai duty by how many time he fail to go home because he was saving a life. But even though Jack got the name "Samurai Jack" by some random people calling him that, it doesn't take away that he is still a Japanese warrior serving under his father, the lord, on a quest or duty. Sound like a Samurai to me.

    • @forestelfranger
      @forestelfranger Před 7 lety +4

      yeah Jack is a very special case. Given well how many times have you heard of a being send into the future?
      That and there have been cases of samurai who even after failure and honor should demand they kill their selves, have been able to get out of it due to them living would allow them to do harm to the enemy. petty much they would be more useful alive than dead and would still be able to make up for their past dishonor by striking at and harming their lord's foe. In Jack's case, he has the only sword known to harm Aku and Aku is the enemy of both Jack and His father. Which he has done gteat harm to Aku, by freeing people enslaved under him, harming Aku's minions and allies.

Samurais and knights were like conquering colonizers, and government police, from the past, terrorizing, attacking, conquering, and controlling a vulnerable populace according to the will of rich, selfish nobility. And ninja, samurai’s worst enemies, were people fighting back against the government- some of them selfish, yes, (mostly the ones hired by the rich to attack other rich) but plenty of them just trying to stand up again a controlling government for themselves or their tribes. An example would be Minamoto no Makoto, seventh son of Emperor Saga and the first son to be given the surname Minamoto; essentially demoting him from the title of Imperial Prince. Other clans can be descended from such Noble clans. The Oda clan, the clan name for Oda Nobunaga, for example, descended from the Taira. There are also many other clans that are in-turn descended from such clans still. For example, the Tokugawa clan, founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu, descended from both the Nitta clan and the Matsudaira clan, both of which in-turn descended from the Minamoto clan (which in-turn descended from the Imperial house).

      +RetroFilth Because it just isn't. Genndy Tartakovsky made it clear that this was the fifth and final season concluding the story of Samurai Jack. If this was a reboot, then we would've seen a complete rewrite of the show's first episode and have it build on from there.

    I always thought if you were beheaded by a close associate during seppaku it became: harakiri.

    • @MtSpider
      @MtSpider Před 7 lety +2

      both translate to the same, one is a much older word than the other. both mean to "cut belly" or "horizontal belly slice".
      the person standing behind you was called A kaishakunin, and his function is to quicken the death and help you avoid a slow painful end if you accidentally fucked up. they also cut your head off before you showed pain, as pain was considered weakness.
      if you absolutely need to distinguish the two: your lord would command you to commit seppuku instead of dishonor. but you would decide to commit harakiri yourself, to avoid being captured by the enemy, tortured and dishonorably killed.

    When you mentioned that Jack never killed another human being until season 5 I can't help but think of one episode in particular where several well respected bounty hunters and a princess trying to reclaim her kingdom from the horde of Aku, they built up this plan to defeat Jack but failed. Yet they are suspected to have survived. One fan theory I read on Reddit suggests that Jack was trained to defeat his enemies by non-lethal methods. The reason for this training is to ensure that he remains worthy to wield the magic blade given to him by the primordial gods. Jack loses the sword in season 5, and he suspects that he has to find the sword when in actuality he needs to earn the sword. This is especially damning for Jack because he refused to kill Ashi after already killing all her sisters. His alter ego conscious advises against this

    But Jack is trying to defeat Aku because of his father’s wishes. It’s not like Jack is doing this on a personal whim, and he was consumed with grief later on in the series when he believed he failed his father and his people. Jack was going through the process of seppuku, or harakiri, which is closely associated with samurai whom have failed in their duties. Overall, title of a samurai is still valid because he’s serving a lord by defeating Aku and almost killed himself thinking that his father deemed him to be a failure.
