    At the end of the day, the cost of a wall mount, maybe even the build quality, is insignificant when compared to the mounting/hanging process. I'm suprised this video skippied right over mounting because it seems to imply that this would be about how one can safely hang a guitar. Regardless, when thinking about how to safely hang a guitar, there's nothing more important than the mounting process and the screws that are used to hold the mount. Before anything, all guitar wall mounts should be driven into a stud - no exceptions. If you have no stud, then don't hang the guitar! Understand this, if a guitar mount goes into drywall without utilizing a stud, it WILL FALL! It is only a matter of time. A guitar can hang on drywall safely for 10-years, but it will eventually fall! One should also never use the screws that are provided. You should go out and buy the same sized screws, but about two inches longer. The point is that you want to go deep into the wall stud and the provided screws are usually too short. They might work fine, but do you really want to hang a $5,000.00 Gibson when a couple of longer $0.10 screws could have guaranteed better results? Personally, I have a rule that I try not to hang guitars because I believe that the closer the guitars are to the floor, the least amount of damage they will sustain. However, I do have some guitars mount on my wall but the mounts are so strong, I can literally hang off of each one myself! The point is that the actual mounts themselves, are insignificant when compared to the process of mounting and the screws that are used. By the way, cotton Is a natural fiber and that's why it ate through the guitar finish. Always use foam instead. Tip: when tossing out old guitar stands, always save the top part, especially the foam piece. It can come in handy when hanging guitars later.

      Hey mate, thanks for the comment. Great advice. Yes, you are right... I probably should have mentioned the actual installation process. I live in a house with brick walls so having the find a stud was not an issue (and I must say didn't even cross my mind - I've lived here for 20 years), but I would absolutely reiterate your advice. Find the stud and install. If you have a brick wall, it's pretty straight-forward. I would disagree on the insignificance of the actual mounts though. These Hercules ones are way better than anything else I found. Thanks again for the helpful comments! All the best Simon

      @@SimonMorelguitar Thanks for the reply! I appreciate your response. It's a funny thing about hanging guitars, most people believe that the items in the kit are enough to ensure a safe hang. I have more than a few friends who have had expensive guitar drops. I'm talking about a couple of Tele's a few Strats, a Gibson or two! It's pretty painful stuff! People forget that every movement and vibration in the house is corrupting anything that hangs on a wall. The heavier, the better the chances that it's coming down!
      What I did fail to mention, and you might agree, is these single, multi-guitar hangers. The kind where you can stretch five or six guitars across....Man, those things really scare me! People easily forget that if these things fail it's not just one guitar coming down, it's five or six, depending on how many are hung up! Some years ago a friend of mine had five guitars come down at once. Although they were all playable, they all sustained heavy cosmetic damage! I always tell people to stay away from those.
      I must say that I actually like the European set-up of going into brick, with no studs. I am a former contractor, so I know that fastening directly into brick can be just as safe, if not better, than going into a stud! Thanks again, mate!

      @HCkev Před 2 lety +1

      Good point. The included screws are probably implying you're screwing it directly into some wood and not drywall. Obviously, you need to account for the thickness of the drywall before it reach the stud, and yeah, I'd go with a slightly longer screw than necessary just to be safe. Also, it's important to use good quality, sturdy screws. Drywall screws, for example, will likely snap off!

    I live in a small apartment where I keep the main window open all the time, year round, wet or dry, cold or hot. I feel most comfortable keeping my $3000 Martin acoustic in its hard case, propped up against my bookcase. One thing I know, it keeps the dust and other accumulation off of it. I rarely ever have to think about cleaning it. And it's easily accessible, right there. I have a few old guitars - and horns - I can hang up to make my apartment look music cool. I have owned a few folding floor guitar stands, and they also have that toxic rubber that will eat away at nitro, and other thin finishes. I'm glad that you brought this up. I have an SG special that this happed to on the bottom of the body, where guitar rested on 2 hooks. It doesn't really bother since these models were made to wear out quicker, but anyone who has a high end guitar, and doesn't want it to get damaged should do some research before buying wall hangers, or floor stands. I have high end Strats some nitro, and some poly finish. I'm glad that I learned this lesson years ago on a less expensive guitar. 😆

    Get a humidity monitor (hygrometer) if you are going to leave them out. I moved from from cold, dry Melbourne to hot and humid Brisbane and I kept my guitar in my air conditioned office (air conditioners dry the air). What I didn't realise was this meant my guitar was in a room whose humidity was fluctuating wildly. The top of the bridge on my takamine acoustic split off (and went flying across the room). The first question my Lutiher asked me was whether my music room was air conditioned.
    So I am back to storing my guitars in their cases with those Boveda packs that keep the case between 45 and 55 percent humidity.
    I may invest in dehumidifier and a humidifier at some point.

    I recently bought a Martin 00018 and I’m loving it but one thing the paper work that it came with said was to never hang them on an exterior wall because the differences in temperature between outside and inside can cause problems. All of my hangers just so happened to be on exterior walls and I did have a 12 string where the soundboard began to separate from the side towards the bottom of the guitar. Might have happened anyway but maybe there’s something to that.

    • @SimonMorelguitar

      That is interesting. Mine are all on internal walls, so can't verify that. Was the 12-string in the sun? I guess it also depends where you live and temperature variations night to day. Thanks for watching and congrats on the Martin! Beautiful guitar

      It wasn't in the sun and I live in a relatively mild climate. 12 strings have a notoriously large amount of string tension on them and I suspect that was the real culprit. You can't be too careful though, especially with expensive guitars. I figured it was worth mentioning.

    So my personal opinion, I have had issues as warping etc. Let me explain: I live in a very old apartment. All the walls are solid brick walls, no drywall, nothing. When the guitars where hanging on the wall to the outside of the house, you do notice it, especially in the winter times. The wall gets pretty cold. So I placed everything on the opposite side, where's another room behind it. I haven't had any troubles since. But also I am very picky with my guitar setups. I play at very low action and I also prefer a slight front bow so the strings can vibrate freely. Just be wary where you mount the guitars. Having them on the wall is an absolute eye candy and looks way better than simply placing them on the ground :)

      One explanation that I saw for why wall hanging shouldn't harm a guitar is that the weight of the guitar is almost always significantly less than the tensile forces imparted by the strings. Basically the gravity is cancelled out by the tension.
      Google says that the weight of an electric guitar is usually around 3-4kg, while the tensile force is usually the equivalent of about 50-100kg in the opposite direction.

    I understand humidity is what destroys guitars, especially low humidity. If you hang a guitar, don't hang it above a heat source like a radiator or fire place or an appliance that makes heat like a TV. External walls can be bad if they heat up or if there's moisture or mold. Obviously, keep the guitar out of any sunlight. Use a humidifier if the humidity is low.

    • @SimonMorelguitar
      @SimonMorelguitar  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi @Artemis, thanks for watching the video. Firstly it depends where you live and what the weather conditions are like. Generally if you are comfortable in the room, your guitars will be. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from hearing and cooling sources. If you live in a particularly damp climate, guitars don't like that. There are remedies available though. Re your question 2m should be fine as long as they are not directly in front. I'm my room I have a split system on the wall to my left in this video. The stream does not hit the guitars but it's less than 2m away. I've had no problems. Check out this article for more info.
