I don't get it. I want to start doing these kinds of things, but it has been a LONG time since I sewed anything. I'm sure it's just me as to why your instructions don't make sense.
My university’s costume shop used to do this, but the shelters stopped accepting them because the dogs would rip them apart and the scraps would get into the drains and clog them :/ It’s unfortunate.
I love this!! Do you have any idea for fabrics that arents like pee/water-seep through kinda? My doggo well loves to pee on clothes so would love to make one but not want it be stinky? Can you help me out? What do you exactly use for the outer fabric
I did this a while ago I fully support it even though it turn out ridiculously heavy for the size which just means make sure the seams are good and strong
A heavy duty upholstery thread seems like it would be the way to go. And maybe an over cast stitch. I'm thinking of the abuse my 4 year old would give to an item like this, while also considering making one.
Making a heavier quilt is such a great idea! I've tried making a quilt once and it didn't have the "heft" of the quilts I used in childhood... I wonder if the batting of those hefty quilts was actually fabric, instead of the lofty batting I used.
@@hiddenkitty675It's also possible that they couldn't make batting as fine as they can today. I have a quilt I made, all cotton fabric, cotton thread, *and* cotton batting, and it's honestly very light.
I learned how to sew because I'm 5 foot nothing and need to hem every pair of pants I own. Yes even ones I buy petite. I'm saving all of my trimmings so I can make a whole new pair of pants out of them one day.
That's great, I'd love to see how they turn out! 😃 My daughter is 6 ft tall and has the opposite problem. Tall lengths for women are hard to find and then sometimes are ridiculously long (like for 6'4" women or something, very few of whom exist) maybe you can send your trimmed hems her ways so that her pants will actually be long enough!😂👖
You can also donate it to local programs. Mine goes to a women's prison were they teach them to quilt and sew. The quilt blankets and nicu covers that go home with the baby. They sew burial gowns for those who sadly do not go home. As a NICU mom, I love this program.
Oh wow I really appreciate this tip I do have a lot of scrap fabrics and usually just throw it away with a huge amount of guilt but this is a great thing to do thank you so much for the idea
You just gave me a wonderful idea for my grandbaby! I'm going to make her a love shaped bean bag style chair! Thank you for the inspiration! Happy sewing! 💚
One of the footstools I already have is looking a bit flat, I might just top it up with scrap fabric rather than buying more stuffing. Useful video, thanks! 👍
Oooh this is guna b my christmas gift to my sister. She lives 0 waste and ik she would love something like this for her new apartment ☠️ and I have a huge scrap fabric graveyard
What a fantastic idea!! I keep everything and usually use the fabric waste for little cross stitch pillows I make for myself. But I have so much and this idea is so useful! Thanks 👍🏻🙂👍🏻 🌷🌷
I am from India , in particularly our region, What we do is collects all scraps...old clothes work too...remove seams if any to avoid bumps... Make a blanket case (similar to pillow case) , Lay all the scrap clothes in even layers, turn the blanketcase inside out in a way that layers are not disturbed....and then without moving it too much...and handstitch all around the blanket.... I absolutely love the heavy and warm feel of this blanket. I guess quilt is the same? Not sure about it though...
Hi, how do the scraps inside the blanket stay evenly distributed ? So that when you move it the scraps don't just fall to the bottom? Are there stitches throughout the blanket? Thanks and have a great day🙂
@@marydc7625 like we put one scrap on other throughout the blanket and with had we sew it without moving any scrap , it takes so much time and patience 🙂
They used to do this years ago, every old lady I knew as a kid had a patchwork pouffe made out of pretty scraps and all the worn out, stained good for nothing clothes, bed sheets and towels were the stuffing. It is a good idea. I am not a sewer so would never get enough scraps, I sometimes make plaited cat toy, octopus things with old clothing no one else could wear and beyond my capability of repairing.
If you want to have a sustainable stuffing but don't have trashbags full of scraps, in some places you can source recycled denim. I have several large bags of recycled denim from when we were getting a low-waste meal kit delivery that insulated boxes with recycled denim (Sunbasket).
My jaw dropped. I need to do something like this! I've been throwing away the tiny pieces, thinking, "I can't make a quilt out of this," not realizing I can just use them for stuffing! Thank you for this awesome idea!
Good Idea and cute ! I use my scraps of fabric for stuffing for crochet plushes (amigurumi) but it doesn't work if you want to wash it because it wouldn't dry fast enough. So an Ottoman is great !
I keep all my tiny scraps and thread that comes off the edge of my server in jars - just yesterday I used a whole bunch as stuffing in a pillow I made!
Cute idea! Word of warning: Don't stuff things with scrap fabric that need to be washed once in a while. I.e. Pillows or children's stuffies. They get be soooo heavy when wet and will never get fully dry. I ended up replacing the scraps with regular cotton batting.
If it sags you fluff it by rolling it around to redistribute the insides, it's gonna last way longer than poly fill, and it's probably very heavy and dense, unlike poly fill which is mostly air which compacts easily and doesn't really ever fluff up entirely it's all fabric, so its much sturdier too
I used an obscene amount of scrap fabric to stuff my dogs beds. I mixed it with foam, and they both seem to enjoy them. It is crazy the amount of scrap bits you can stuff into a seemingly small space.
Oh my God thank you usually videos like this are pretty predictable to me. I did not expect that and I love that idea I have so much fabric that I’ve been “ meaning to do something with” and I think once I finally try out what I wanted to do with it, there’s definitely gonna be a lot of failures, and I could probably stuff and ottoman full of my failed attempts😂
I do the same thing with m scraps. I have a big box that I dump my scarp fabric & thread into, then use it for pillows, pincushions, padding, and so on. The first pillow I made actually wound up being the perfect thickness and density to either put under my head on nights that I sleep on my back, or prop up my hand on side-sleeping nights. (Yes, I need a hand-pillow, because all my joints are hypermobile, and my wrists and knees in particular will get overstretched and out-of-whack if not given proper support/kept at the correct angles.)
This is a wonderful idea. 💖 I actually wanted to do this, use saved scraps for projects .. but I simply have no space to store them. This is how I come to my conclusion. Little living space, equals more waste. 🤭
oh i love zero waste projects! And O just found this out because I've never seen one before!!! this will definitely help me not look like a hoarder to my husband. ❤
Your dialog is so similar to how me and my sisters speak. 💜 kindred spirit I just made a dog bed this way. It turned out looking like female anatomy somehow but it works!
The reason the scraps fit more when they're smaller is, well... because they're smaller. 😅 An easy way to visualize it is to picture a glass cup with sand and rocks. If the cup is filled with larger rocks first, there will be gaps for sand to fill. If the _sand_ is put in first, then there's no space between the grains for any rocks to occupy, and they'll just sit on top. The same concept applies to fabric -- bigger items have more folds and space between, while smaller things have less of both! 😄
I make denim pillows stuffed with cut up fabric scraps. I also weave, and make denim rugs by deconstructing old jeans donated by family and friends. Many a dorm room floor has been covered with 4'x8' rugs made from denim, or from thrift store sheets torn into strips.
This is such a great use of scrap fabric!! Love the mindset, and it’s cute!!!

@Chandra-sv2qe You could try a weatherproof canvas fabric or spray your fabric with a few coats of water repellent spray or a beeswax sealant.
