Greatest Rivalries in Sumo Wrestling - Asashoryu vs Hakuho - Part 1

  • Asashoryu versus Hakuho for me is one of the most exciting and intense rivalries in Sumo History. Both wrestlers have the perfect combination of strength, speed, fighting spirit and elite grappling skills that made them almost unbeatable in their prime. So I decided to compile all of their bouts and made a breakdown for each match.
Hakuho and Asashoryu fought 29 times in their career and I broke it down to three parts series. Hope you enjoy this video and see you on the next one! Hakkeyoi!!

The absolute aggression Asashoryu displayed while fighting other rikishi, especially Mongolian rikishi, was insane. He didn’t care about looking like a bad guy, he only cared about two things: victory, and teaching the young Mongolians aggressive behaviors.

I am so happy you made this as I have seen many videos of Hakuho vs Asashoryu bouts, but none I have seen give the Year, Tournament Day, Record at that time of the tournament, and rank of each. This adds so much because it gives context to the bout. I never had even realized how much of a difference this makes while watching these bouts until I saw, this video. A match up where they are both undefeated vs on undefeated and the other with 4 losses completely changes the context. I found myself in the edge of my seat watching the playoff match because of the weight it carried. I am sure I had seen that match many times in other videos but didn't know the background. Makes all the difference in the world. Keep up the excellent work!!!!!!

Man, say what you will about Asa outside the ring but once he stepped in that dohyo he was an absolute MONSTER! No one else gave Hakuho a run for his money like he did, we're so lucky we got to see these two battle it out in their prime. Great compilation and break down Don Don!

      What happened outside the ring?

    • @barath4545
      @barath4545 Před rokem +3

@@MoejiiOsmanTV A lot. Asa punched a waiter (official note) and got forced retirement with a big payout. He was feuding with Kyokoshozan one of the first Mongolian Makuuchi rishiki and both tried to ruin the other constantly, but ppl like Hakuho and especially Haramafuji were friends with Kyoko so Asa kinda lost out but had a massive amount of behind the scenes pull and eventually got Kyoko fired in 2017. Asa was also a bit of an intimidating asshole and slapped his stablemate at his heya often and practiced the bullying a lot. He then also have said some controversial stuff lately and he is disliked as much as liked.
I focus on the Dohyo and the memories and he still stands, for me, as the greatest era and spectable in Sumo ever, especially when Hakuho came on the scene.
I mean 18 yrs (with 108 bashos) and 75+ basho wins between them, thats 70+ % of the wins OVER 18 YEARS of Sumo!

70-80% of mongolians stopped watching sumo after Asashoryu retired.

You just listed the impressive resume of Asa but didn't mention the even more impressive resume of hakoru. That's intentional misinformation my friend. 😉
Just because sb "did it first" it doesn't mean it's a more impressive achievement.
Young hakuo had a dominant Asa in front so of course he struggled more... Well "struggled" 😂😂😂

lol stats nerds... same as jordan was nevee even close to being good basketball player same hakuho is million times better than any other yokozuna, its not about stupid numbers, its about absolute domination and humiliation

The point is that Asa paved the way for him. Trained a lot together and if the only reason Hakuho was so successful post-2010 was that there was no Asa to challenge him.@@thomasmuller546

Don’t know a lot about Sumo but played American Football for a number of years. Specifically the O-Line. Asashoryu burst from his stance is dynamic. Seems like he beats guys in the first few seconds by exploding from his stance then using his balance and strength to finish the attack and defend against throws. Where his opponents beat him is by nullifying his burst by using their hands at the point of attack. If you can stalemate his burst, you have a chance to halt him, get position and grip, and begin to maneuver him to the ring edge. Easier said than done.

I come from an Aikido background and I was thinking the same thing. That burst is insane from a guy that size. He knew how to use it to finish early and his opponent knew he only had a chance if he managed to nullify it somehow, which he did with a lot of work in some of the matches. Only once he could actually dodge it cleanly though

I think it would be nice if you make sinilar videos with other rivalies, like:
    Kitanoumi vs Wajima
    Akebono vs Takanohana
    Musashimaru vs Takanohana

i know they had good matches and fantastic rivalry but takanohana is top 6th yokozuna and akebono is i dont know maybe top 20 yokozuna range he has only 11 yusho but hakuho is the fucking undisputed GOAT and asashoryu is 4th best yokozuna in history so asa hak rivalry should be greatest rivalry in sumo history
