I recently bought three from China. And they’re flawless.
Everything straight out of the box. Sent them in for a set up. And was told. All three were perfect. Just a string change.
The Rickenbacker bass 4001 the 360 and the 12 string !
But Dave. I would still send my Gibsons to you !
Love the videos. I never miss a one. Thank you.

I see this video is about 4 years old... but it really helped me out today. The way you took multiple measurements and double checked everything to be as accurate as possible and explaining why was so thorough ... I learned something. I will do that on every guitar that I will work on. I am not a luthier, but I can see that I need to buy those tools you used that I don't have. Excellent video and Thank you so much.

I actually have a Chickenbacker, & if that’s all you had to do to it, their quality has come WAY up since I got mine! I think you expect a little too much from these guitars that mostly cost around $200 shipped. They are what they are, & to be honest, that one actually looks pretty decent. Even seemed like it might sound good, just from the little bit of twanging on it ya did. Guy prolly paid around $300 for that, when a real one is prolly about $3-4 grand. I understand why there is a market for these, but if I had to do it over, I wouldn’t

Reminds me of a 1990 B.C. Rich Platinum Series guitar I bought (new) out of desperation and played at a gig (which we got fired from after the first set) when my main guitar and back up got broken. I had no time for changing my presets so I played it thru what I had. It sounded like cats fighting. Now referred to as...The Catostraster! Lol. Also, I knew a guy who I played with back in the day and he became a crackhead for a while and he kept pawning stuff to support it. He had a Rick bass and he would pawn it, get it back, pawn it etc. until finally he let it go for good. I saw him after those times and asked him whatever happened to his Rick and he told me the story of how he pawned it for crack. Ah! I said, so you lost The Crackenbacher! Too effin funny!

Had FB do the same thing to a group I had...30,000+ members...one morning, just gone and never a response as to why. I kept it moderated closely too to make sure no FB rules were broken. So will always remain a mystery and I didn't bother putting up a new group page, fed up with FB.
On another note, I am waiting on tuners to finish up a 12 string project from parts guitars I had laying around. Mid 60's Baldwin 335 copy body with a Vox 12 string neck, P90's, trapeze tailpiece (and like Ric used to do, maybe still does, use one slot for 2 strings), original Baldwin bridge that has nylon saddles with serrations on each saddle so string placement is adjustable which makes it perfect for 12 stings instead of the original 6. Chinese electronics...So all in it will be under a $100...probably give the guitar to one of my grandkids. Fun stuff!

Back in the 60s I put Balwin tuners and PUPs on my Hoffner. TBH, I think I downgraded that poor guitar! Back then, I knew practically nothing, as there was no InterWeb. Or crowned frets, just file 'em down. Actually, the Slide-About-O-Matic bridge, which was totally unattached and had no intonation adjustment, was the real vagina, but someone somewhere will probably swear Hoffners were the Cat's Pyjamas, and will say all solid guitars should have a trapeze-type tailpiece.

    • @glenchoitz9497

@@Ndlanding I actually started this Vox/Baldwin project about 20 years ago...pretty sure I had all of the original Baldwin parts back then, guitar had a broken scroll headstock when I got it, no idea where all that stuff got off to. Vox neck must have come off of something, but I can't remember what or when I even got it. Probably owned over 50 guitars since then, still have about 30, so things get a little fuzzy as to when or where I got them. I do own a Baldwin built Gretsch after they sold out to Baldwin around 1972 and moved to Arkansas, Country Club model near mint and is one nice guitar, 1979. Got it in a part trade for a 1960 Gibson ES345 plus a shit ton of cash. Actually like the Gretsch better than the 345. By then they had their fit/finish and building down pat versus the old Baldwin stuff and not as fragile as the Gibson, worth way less money so not as worried about it as you had to be with the 345 either. Now that I've got old (sneaks up on ya) I have more time to finish off projects started years ago....IF I can keep the Honey Do's under control around here.

The band is in their lodging for the night and beverages are being consumed. The bathroom is occupado, and Gino can't wait. It's a ground floor room, and it's night time, who's gonna see him draining the weasel right? He goes outside, walks behind a tree, falls into a hole, and breaks his leg! I've got a friend who owns a guitar store and someone can in with a Chibson Jimmy Page 1275, wanted $200.00 for it. He explained the he couldn't sell a counterfeit or tribute guitar, so no deal. He called me and asked if I'd be interested. So I said yeah, I'd take a look, he said he wanted to trade it for an Epiphone 12 string and fifty bucks. . I got there with my Samick 12 string and case. I asked my friend to do a once over. He said the necks actually looked good, he tuned it and checked the intonation. I offered the guy my Samick and $25.00, he took it. I had my friend do a set up a few frets needed leveling, and restring it. He said it's close, as good as an Epiphone 1275. So I had about $80.00 cash into the guitar. I wound up replacing the 6 string bridge, the tuners, and the nuts. Funny thing is, I have a friend who plays in a few bands and she has the real Gibson. She told me that most people regret buying these after a few months, but they are incredibly difficult to sell and not take a bath on. I got over the thrill in about two months.

Is the neck wider on the Chickenbacker than a normal Ric neck? If so, it may be worth having just for that reason alone...I never could get used to that extreme narrow finger spacing on a Ric, something Ric refuses to change though people have complained about it for years. I have a 60's 360 12 Japanese copy that is very accurate except for an 1/8th inch wider neck...plays better for me than any Ric I have owned and plenty jangly.

    The STRINGS ARE ON WRONG.
For this model of Rick starting with the 620 THE LOW STRING IS FIRST opposite to the usual high string on top it should be on the bottom. That's Rickenbacker's design for this series of 12's.

@dave Wish you had played a few chords after you fiddled with the string height. The clone is not a neck-through as the original 660, wrong tailpiece. Seen some MIC 660 TP's with the wrong pickup spacing. A difficult body to build IMO. Originals of these go for 8 grand. Better strings are night and day for these MIC units. There's no video of this particular 660/12 solid body clone I can find to hear what the guitar sounds like after set-up. The semi-hollow "cat's eye" ones of the Ric 12 seen on YT sound awful. And the people playing them in the videos can't tell the difference.
