      One of my favorite people in the world was Randy...from Randy's Records in Pomona, CA. We used to hang out with beers after he closed shop...and listened to records while he vented his agonies about most of his customers who came in looking for the worst fucking music possible.
      He lived in the back, sorted nothing...and had hundreds of boxes just stuffed with 45's in his "personal" room.
      I really miss him. If you see this Randy...the Art Colony just isn't the same without you.

  • @MICKEYISLOWD
    @MICKEYISLOWD Před 7 lety +1

    With a neck like this it's best to clamp it up forcing a back bow and use lots of heat with Irons ect so you get a back bow when the truss rod is at full loose. Then the truss rod will engage earlier with string on and up to tension. Only thing to watch out for is scalf jointed necks can come apart so you need to clamp the joint real solid before you go with the heat. It's a permanent fix though. If the neck can come off ie a bolt on you can do it in the oven for a quicker result. It also works for twisted or 'S' shaped necks if you can clamp it to a solid straight edge.

      Often? Try always. You remember Fender doing a Mexican reissue of the Antigua Strat? I own an original ('79 Antigua Strat). Was in my local dealer who had one hung up. Sales kid was amazed when I told him it was better than the original. I've a Tokai from the same 'era' and peeps always ignore the Tokai and drool over the Fender - the Tokai is better in every way. If it weren't for Ibanez, Tokai, Yamaha etc we'd be paying five times as much for Fenders and Gibsons of lower quality than what we currently get for £100.

    It's an Electra too! Corsair 2278. Or a Greco, and like 12 other companies that got them from the Matsumoku factory and threw their logo on the truss rod cover. I just bought one. Noticed the hotter humbucker pickips, a slightly longer neck scale, a screw on neck, the smaller metal hunk around the back pickup, the non-dual truss rod and decided... Well hey, I like all those changes, it's got the looks, it keeps the other things I like about Ricks like the pickup placement, controls and maple neck and body, I found one with an upgraded bridge that included a video demo showing it plays great with a non-gooched neck and all the electronics working fine, and it was a third of the price made in Japan. Sign me up!

      Take a good look again at the opening sequence around 20 seconds in- Pretty sure the truss rod cover on this one also said Ibanez before someone went after it with white-out and sharpie. I’ve almost bought a Rickenbacher a couple of times through the years now, as a lover of early Geddy Lee tones, and as someone who always thought it would be fun to mess around with Rickosound stereo outputs, but I could never quite get past how overpriced the Ricks seem to be for what they are. I’ve had lots of Ibanez branded products through the years, from a classical acoustic through to several basses, and have yet to find one I didn’t think was a fantastic instrument for the price point. Probably the favourite bass I ever had was a lawsuit era Ibanez Fender Jazz copy that I bought used in the late 70s and sold for peanuts when I went back to school in the late 80s, after having at various times through the years ignorantly sanded down the beautiful original sunburst finish which came to me with a bit of genuinely earned distress patina, and replacing that with first white automotive rattle can, then black, then stripping and sanding everything down again and going to a lightish stain and clear lacquer . My first crack at it with the white rattlecan when I was 16 or so probably wasn’t much better quality work than the truss rod cover on this one, and I certainly now regret having messed with the original finish, but the final product actually looked pretty good overall, and I definitely regret ever letting that one go- it might have something to do with where my personal case of “guitar acquisition syndrome” came from……

  • @ZeekDuff
    @ZeekDuff Před 7 lety +2

    You can put a flat washer on the truss rod, I fixed a Gibson CS-356 like that when the truss rod wouldn't tighten any more, the threads were just bottoming out. Hard part is finding one that fits, I just happened to have... 😉 It should never be that hard to twist to achieve a back-bow. When you're twisting that hard, you're probably making new threads on the rod, too much of that & bye-bye threads, stripped. Oops... MAJOR repair ahead. 😳

    1. I think I saw in Dan Erlewine’s repair book where he took the nut off a Gibson truss rod and added a couple washers to give it more room to work. I know I has been some time since this repair but do you think this may be an effective solution for similar situations in the future?
    2. Any idea why in the hell Rickenbacker would choose to put finish (I am assuming urethane?) on a rosewood fretboard? Who else does this (besides those making a “Rick” copy)?
    3. Big advantage with that Ibanez copy is a bolt-on neck where you can easily adjust the neck angle with shims as necessary!
    Looks like it would be a nice bass (nicer than an actual “Rick” if you sort out the issues.

    • @TheSteveSteele
      @TheSteveSteele Před 4 lety

      Ray Sauter Ricks have had gloss finishes on their fretboards forever. Why they do it I can only speculate. Possibly they were concerned about the necks warping. The original necks were very thin and not very wide when they first came out in the ‘60s. Maybe they were trying to protect the Bubinga wood they used for fretboards, or to help keep the tone consistent. Regardless it’s an old convention and Ricks tend not to change much over time.They also used to be picky about what replacement strings owners used in their old warranties. I have a mid-‘70s 4001 and it has a much thinner neck then they do today. However, that gloss finish does feel glassy smooth when polished nicely.

    Funny that the knockoff is preferable. The real thing just looks tedious as hell to work on and this one with all its problems looks like a better buy haha

      ffairlane57 hell, Squier has been making better Strats than Fender.

      Hell I picked up a 600 dollar Fender P Bass and a 200 Dollar Ibanez Bass the other day at the store and the Ibanez had it beat hands down. I know the Fender was a MIM but I also know the difference isn't much the Fender had nothing wrong with it the strings were decent the neck and action was just where it should be the Ibanez was just a better bass that was more comfortable and had better tone. I liked the P Bass I would play it any day. But for 1/3 the cost the Ibanez was a better instrument. I should have compared the Squier P Bass with the Fender but I ran out of time.

    Like your vid Dave. When I have a stubborn truss rod like that I use a drop of 3 in one oil on it. Is that a bad idea ?

    • @ZeekDuff
      @ZeekDuff Před 7 lety +2

      You're better off with using liquid graphite lock lube. I had a stuck Fender truss rod on a new Jaguar, the "Player Special" whatever MIM, and you gotta remove the neck to get at the truss rod adjustment. I took the adjusting nut off, poured in about half a teaspoon, let it sit upright overnight so the stuff would run down the full length, and next day it worked perfectly. I wouldn't put oil in there, there's raw wood and oil will make it swell up. Worse problem, then. The liquid carrier of the lock lube evaporates fairly quickly, leaving just a fine coating of graphite. Good stuff, that.

  • @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney

    This is why I won't work on Rickenbackers, genuine and copy alike. Well, a few other reasons, too. I think old Rickenbacker frets are indeed lacquered over, are they not? In any case, this copy's were. Pretty sure StewMac makes some kind of an apparatus to thread truss rods further for this sort of scenario, so you don't have to take the fingerboard off. I'm sure that's a nightmare on a Ric, too, though.

    Some guitars just aren't designed well. That's a known fact,.... a given. The thing is, we get them, they are a fact of life. Once we discover the issues, we'll call the customer [actually email], with our opinion and the facts.
    BUT DAVE, you gotta give the customer more to go on........The difference is that we'll give that customer a pretty good idea of what it would cost to make it playable at least, and another cost, to make it perfect. That sort of thing. Otherwise, if you just say it's gooched, the poor customer has no basis as to approving or rejecting a repair.

      Aria Rick replicas are really supposed to be quite respectable actually, even with the dual truss rod. I've not played one, but several people have demos of them that make a pretty good argument for how fine they are.
