He're the journey of getting a Ric with the expectation that it can be made to play modern and dependable:
    - remove the pickup cover from the assembly
as it hinders half of the picking/plucking area
    - nowhere to rest your thumb and the remaining metal pickup cover can shred your
hand, ok fine you bought it to play it with a pick anyway
    - discover adjusting intonation is a pain in the butt
    - two truss rods, cool I can have different relief for thick and thin strings and also maybe correct a twisted neck
    - well they're still single action so they're double useless if the neck ever gets backbow or backbow-ish twist
    - official manual saying you want to bend the neck first with external force when adjusting truss rods doesn't bode well, are they prone to break?
    - discover you can't get the action reasonably low on factory bridge
    - discover you can't palm mute due to the foam mute assembly
    - consider cutting slots into the saddles
    - screw it, just buy the Hipshot replacement bridge
    - discover the intonation is always imperfect due to the frets having no crowns
    - discover you can't really recrown them cause there's very little fret that's above fingerboard lacquer
    - consider a refret, discover it's not the same price as for your Jazz Bass refret cause it's a pain to do when fretboard was lacquered after frets were put in
    - ok will live with those frets
    - discover those soft vintage alloy frets are eaten up by strings to fretboard lacquer level after two months of frequent playing
    - order a stero jack to 2x mono jack Y cable cause they never ever stock it at your local music store
    - plug it into a bass amp and guitar amp at the same time
    - enjoy how cool Ric o Sound, well, sounds - for 10 minutes, then never ever use the stereo output again
    - enjoy the distinct growl and attack in the sound of the bass, but quickly become aware it's all it ever does (tone knobs, pickup selection switch, even the foam mute will never get this to sound round and mellow)
    - it's a know fact the bass goes great with overdrive, so logically you get no RWRP hum cancelling middle position and no cavity shielding, because vintage, because Rickenbacker, because fuck you, and boy can it sometimes hum and buzz
    - do the math that you could've bought a US Fender for half the price and it would've been stage ready after adjusting a few screws
    Bonus step:
    - ask for advice on any of those things, get scolded by Rickenbacker zealots that you don't deserve to play them if you don't accept them 100% as they are

I put multiple layers of tape on the top of the bridge pickup bar magnet edge and rested my thumb there. Perfect anchor point and plucking point on the strings, for me at least. My pick was used very little with the Rick. I found my amp and bass knobs could get the tone and attack I wanted. I never liked resting my hand on the bridge when picking--which is where you have to be to get good leverage and attack IMHO.

Take the plastic chrome cover off the bridge pickup and fill in the cavity with a "Treble Bezel cover" with a built in thumb rest. To play a Ric, you have to be a wee bit smarter then a Ric. I own 51 style P basses, 57 style P basses, Jazz basses and Rics. I love playing the Ric the most.

I have played them but unfortunately, I've never owned one. Soon, hopefully, I will get one. They have their own mojo and secret sauce that other makers can't duplicate. Love the new belly carve.

Ric basses have been a staple in my bass diet for over 40 years. I've been married to one for over 24 years now. Regular maintenance is all It's ever needed through touring, recording, rehearsals and daily practice. I used to break strings all the time, turned out it was me not the bass. I haven't broken a string on her in over 15 years. I love my Fenders too but they all pale in comparison, especially in tone. Anyone who's gigged with me have always asked me to bring the Ric. Admittedly, this one seems different, special maybe? I haven't heard or played another that sounds quite the same or as good. Maybe I lucked out. But this bass is proof that a Ric can have a long and useful lifespan.

The jacks should never be removed from the outside. The guard needs to come off so that the jacks can be pulled through the cavity from the inside. They become misaligned when removing and reinserting from the outside. This appears to be a 4003, which has a different truss rod than a 4001,which DOES require manipulating the neck to adjust. A 4003 can be adjusted entirely with the truss rod tool.

Man I love my RIC 4003, but it is a heck of a headache to set up. Especially compared to all my Fenders. I took my RIC in last week to my local guitar tech and when I popped open the case and took it out he literally sighed and rolled his eyes like "Oh shit...one of those damn things." I've gotten pretty comfortable doing most of my own mods, maintenance, and set-up on my Fenders. But that damn RIC, I gotta take it to someone. That being said, I will probably never sell it. For better or worse, nothing looks or sounds like a RIC.

  • @KozmykJ

Just the one bass I had that kept snapping strings. A Yamaha Attitude 5.
The saddle slots were V shaped so the strings never touched the bottom of the slots. So they were supported at two points, which led to them levering themselves to death as they were plucked and vibrated. Once I figured it out it was a simple matter to U out the bottoms of the slots.
It took me a while to figure because I was using Superwound strings at the time and it wasn’t immediately apparent that they weren’t making contact with the bottom of the slots.
U slots that are cut too deep can do a similar leverage snapping thing too.
Aah Superwound strings, where did they go ?
Stayed bright for Sooo long. Maybe that was the point; maybe lasted so long that sales dropped …
On my Wal basses especially (one got stolen so I had to find another) they sounded glorious.

sdushdiu Yeah, they're just not any good to anyone who's gotten used to Fender-style basses. Necks seem not to have any taper, they sound super clanky and way too bright, the string tension's weird, the frets are laughably tiny yet too flat for good intonation even if you manage to get the saddles adjusted right, and the necks go crazy in any kind of temperature or humidity variation. They're really cool looking, and guys that play them well get cool tones out of them, but it's just not worth it. Oh, and a Ric bridge is just the DUMBEST damn thing there is. Uncomfortable, hard to use, complicated, low-quality, non-functional abortion of a thing. You get almost the same sounds from a Jazz Bass, and it will be guaranteed to work and play perfectly forever with minimal fussing-with, and be way more indestructible and repairable if you somehow do tear it up. Rics are cool, and I'm glad they exist, but they're just not for me at all.

Yeah, the folks that are into them tend to REALLY be into them. I get that because they feel and (to a lesser degree) sound NOTHING like a normal bass guitar. Some folks are into Danelectros and cheesy '60s Sears catalog weirdo Japanese guitars and basses, too. I'm glad they're all out there, and I'm glad the folks that like them like them. Rickenbackers are extremely well-made (the handful I've seen and played), they're just bizarrely designed and super-inconveniently/uncomfortably engineered. I have an old Japanese 'lawsuit' (Greco) Jazz Bass that I routed for new pickup openings at the same harmonic points that a Ric's are. Just filled the bridge pickup opening with a pickup-shaped wood 'inlay', for lack of a better term, got a no-hole pickguard and cut a pickup hole in the new spot, and refinished it in black nitro. Looks factory. The stock Greco pickups were real low-output like a Ric's. Then I very painstakingly leveled and dressed the frets so I could get a super-low action, and Voila! Indistinguishable from a Rickenbacker 4003 to my pretty trained ears when played through an EQ pedal with the bass cut and high mids and treble boosted, but it's a Fender-style bass, so normal humans can play it, haha! I was real into Yes at the time, and wanted a Ric that played and felt right. They're very cool, just not remotely for me.

Bought a 2012 rickenbacker yesterday for £1.6k and it was amazing to use. It was an easy set up and an easy string change. But it is a 2012 ric which is considered the best year for rics as the truss rod and bridge are easier to adjust and fit a lot more securely. Plus they are built a lot stronger. It's a shame to see that the rics made after 2012 got worse again. But nonetheless, the later ones are built way better than the pre 90s rics.

Dissimilar metal corrosion. Yes I agree! But now watching your vid again in 2021, my son who works for me repairing cars informed me that it is actually called Galvanic Corrosion. He went on to explain how dissimilar metals react in neg ways bla bla bla.......... So yes, tho I like your description better, I have learned to identify it by GC so he doesn't correct me. LOL I have forgotten more shit about cars than he knows, but lately I think he is catching up.Oh well, I like you channel better than that shit! Great stuff Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
