Even though her father might not have heard her voice, someone else did; Missy Elliot. Nicole's brother went to an audition Missy was holding and told her of his sister's talent.
Missy came knocking on the doors of Nicole's house in Portland and conducted an audition for the 17-year-old on the spot. Though unprepared, Nicole's voice wowed the music industry trendsetter and she was so completely blown away by her musical prowess that she signed Nicole that same night. Nicole Wray became the first talent of the Goldmind imprint and began her walk to fame in the late '90s.

Missy Elliott has a habit of taking singers and rappers under her wing (Nicole Wray, Lil’ Mo, Mocha, Ms. Jade, Tweet, Jessica Betts, Sharaya J, etc...), does a couple of projects with them (maybe even produce a full length album), and then leaves them high and dry. I never understood that.

I noticed that as well. She used a lot of female singers and cast them aside. It was also a conflict of interest for her to sign with Missy being that Missy was her producer, manager, and head of Goldmind.
One of the most underrated albums of all time. There were some bangers on this album and Nicole is a gem.

That is why its difficult for an artist to sign other artist when they are on the come up. Missy already was successful but hadn't even hit her peak yet, that was in the years to come, Missy was still climbing even higher which she eventually reached her peak in the early 2000s. No way she could have put time into all those other artist, she had a gem in Nicole. Her voice is so unique and she could really sing. Bad decision on Missy's part. I met Nicole in the 2005s right after she signed with Dame Dash, she was very humble and sweet.
She could've waited up until the Misdeameanor Era to form a label.

And I'm a bit surprised she did it that way seeing has how she went thru what she did being under Devante, he kept that entire crew in a studio apartment in Buffalo NY for a couple years before they left and had to do their own thing. Playa, Ginuwine, Miss and Timbaland all were signed with Devante and he did nothing with them.

We spent our little money on equipment, clothes and a little car to get around to gigs

#FunFact Nicole had plans to name the unreleased Roc-a-Fella project as "Fantasia LoveChild", but it ended up getting revised to a different name to avoid confusion with American Idol alumni Fantasia. I do remember back in 2013 Nicole still had ill feelings towards Fantasia over that issue, she kinda alluded that with the album's name being changed at the time it served as a surprise key moment that led up to the LP's eventual shelving.

Missy abandoned her. Mocha was supposed to release her album “Bella Mafia” on Goldmind but it was never released. She released two books: “Cash Money” and “Concrete Jungle” under her real name Aleesha Rivers. She released a limited edition album “One Day at a Time” in 2007. She has since married and goes by Aleesha Robinson and has bakery in Portsmouth, Virginia.
