    The early 2000s was a great time for female hip hop. Eve dropped scorpion. Rah digga dropped dirty Harriet and missy dropped miss e so addictive amongst others . Female rap was on the rise. Around this time, Timbaland was making major waves in the music industry and signed the talented Ms. Jade to his Imprint.

    Sis was mad underrated! As far as Female Philly Rappers go, She should have been where Eve was, in terms of fame and notoriety. Personally, I always felt that she rapped circles around Eve. Ms. Jade fading to obscurity doesn’t surprise me. Missy Elliott had this habit of putting females on and then leaving them “high and dry” (Nicole Wray, Lil’ Mo, Mocha, Sharaya J, Jasmine Sullivan, Jessica Betts, to name a few).

      Really you can add Aaliyah to that list too. Most Aaliyah's later hits were written by Static, including her biggest hit, Try Again. Supposedly, Missy had issues with Aaliyah's label (no surprise) and refused to work on the album, and the only reason Tim is on the album for those handful of songs is because Aaliyah asked him to (and he was in love with her lol).

    • @FrozenRemix1
      @FrozenRemix1 Před 3 lety +11

      @@a_awake Baby Girl can stay right where she is at. Aaliyah was never “Missy’s Protege”. She collaborated with them, Missy and Timbaland were instrumental to her sound and style, and she ended up being bigger after. The women that I listed, weren’t so lucky. They never got that exposure or that PUSH, after Missy left them.

    • @a_awake
      @a_awake Před 3 lety +7

      @@FrozenRemix1 I hear you, I never meant that Missy put Aaliyah on, but she definitely sustained her in her most vulnerable moment. No one would work with Aaliyah and here Tim and Missy come to save the day. I was more so alluding to a list of females that she left high and dry after a string of success. It’s weird that Missy was no where to be found on Aaliyah’s third album besides I Care 4 U from the 1996 sessions. Aaliyah wanted Tim and Missy back but couldn’t get Missy. That’s all I’m saying. High and dry. If Tim and Missy had done the album, Baby Girl might still be here today. Rock The Boat would not have been the radio standout.

      @Tuttutts Před 3 lety +5

      @@a_awake I remember in a 2011 BET special commemorating the 10th anniversary of her death, Tim stated that Missy's rising popularity played a part in her not being able to give much time to the album. The only song they got to record in 2001 is "Where Could He Be?" which also featured Tweet and that finally leaked in 2005 and almost charted before radio was told to halt airplay as it was not officially released.

    Some trivia probably a handful of people don't remember but back in 2010, Ms. Jade revealed in her infamous radio interview that she was originally signed to Missy Elliott's The Goldmind Inc. label during the top of 2001, but recalled some "paperwork got messed up" so she was later transferred to Timbaland's Beat Club imprint instead. Missy had plans to market her under the stage name simply known as "Jade" and readied her underground cut "Watch Ya" a as potential radio single. But of course it never took off since she was beginning to sign to Tim instead.

A shame because the quality of the music is there, I just think mainstream listeners didnt "get it". "Big Head" is dope but is also really off-kilter and a strange choice for a debut single... and in my opinion, Tim was trying too hard to emulate Missy's sound on that record.

    Jade....... The album was dope but sis you saying Missy swagga jacked you? Door knockers and track suits? You mean the same door knockers and track suits that was hot in the 80s before either one of y'all? Someone should have told her not to say that out loud. That sounds delusional.

      Let's say 4 girls formed a group. All of the girls dress like the average performer dress today except one. the one members like to rock the 70's look with the afro and bell bottoms. Now one of the other members like the attention that she is getting and she start dressing the same way. She is now copying her. Missy went from wearing baggy Jean or leather outfits to Adidas jogging suites with the Kangol

    At that time and era the game was changing and unfortunately females with skills wasn't selling and wasn't sort after especially with Foxy and Kim being out and that's very unfortunate. Ms. Jade was really good and Timberland was not for everyone and as talented as most people are in the world the game is not for everyone. A rapper and producer has to have a perfect fit to make a hits. Or the rapper has to have their own visual of what types of beats would fit their lyrics and content and be exceptionally different to stand out against the competition.
