“Fighting” is a Korean or Konglish (English word given a different meaning or pronunciation to Korean speakers) expression. It’s kind of like a slang that means “let’s go!” And “good luck!” all in one. It kind of comes from wishing someone to be filled with a fighting spirit or passion. It’s just kind of a general shout of encouragement.

when they say “comeback,” it basically means that they are releasing a new single/album/music video after not releasing anything big for a certain period of time (usually a few months). for full album comebacks, they have an intro song and an outro song, both of which sometimes have a music video!
(you reacted to interlude shadow by suga, which was the interlude to their album map of the soul 7, and you should react to the intro and outro for that called "persona" by rm and “ego” by jhope respectively :))

And the album references Jungian Psychology throughout (Ego, Persona and Shadow are all aspects of the theory, all about understanding yourself). I know you like to have your own interpretation but if you wanted to understand the background context, I'm sure there will be a video on Jungian Psychology somewhere. Jung worked with Sigmund Freud until he began to disagree with some of his ideas and so branched off. The album Map of the Soul 7 is entirely referenced to the theory

BTS purposely don’t outright explain their videos much or even imagery the director was going for. They encourage fan theories and I swear directors use theories for ideas 😂😂 they like making art open to multiple interpretations.
It’s interesting because a lot of their music is very personal and straightforward and very literal. But they have a bunch of songs that are similarly a bit vague and much more poetic and full of imagery. “Singularity” happens to be one of them. Other songs they purposefully leave out pronouns so they can be interpreted many ways. Between friends or lovers or lovers of various genders. Which I find very fucking awesome

Well said - we can go as deep into a song or video as we want or need at any time - and songs can change meaning for us depending on our moods...
Also, with regards to pronouns - you can also take a lot of their love songs as being written to the self - Singularity can be taken that way - 1. either he is talking to his other self - he submerged Tae for V.... or 2. it can be that he submerged himself for a lover
Fun Fact: "I need you, girl" was originally "I need you, chingu"(friend) but decided 'girl' sounded better - (try it...replace 'girl' with chingu and rewatch the MV - makes more sense then!!)...BORAHAE

1:04 About the solo songs question, yes, they have solos and subunit songs along with the grupal songs in their albums (by subunit songs i mean songs where just a couple of members sing, like songs only with the rap line and such). This is a way where they can show the singularity (pun intended) of each member in their talents, as well as let them share their own particular stories, since in most of their solo songs every member talks about his individual experiences in life, in contrast with the grupal ones that address different topics and shared experiences.
17:47 About the comeback part, they and we the fans call it "comeback" whenever they're gonna release a new single (like Butter was) or a new album!

It is so heartwarming to see how close these guys are. They are a very tight knit brotherhood. Whenever one is working on a solo mv, the rest of the guys all try to drop by when they get a chance, and support them. Sometimes they will spend their own money to send a coffee truck on location for them, or send food. When Jhope did Chicken Noodle Soup, it was very difficult for him, because he flew to LA to film it. He said it was his first time being without the rest of the group, and he missed them so much. Jk was suppose to go with him, but had to cancel. Not only was it difficult for him because the guys weren’t there, but he had to travel without them, and he was half way around the world from them.

As other's have started to explain, "comeback" just refers to a kpop artist "coming back with a new album". It doesn't mean there was an extended hiatus necessarily. There's a lot of kpop lingo that goes with the fandom, but you'll pick it up a bit at a time! Congrats on reaching 25k! So true about all the lingo... bias, fighting!, bias wrecker, comeback, hi touch, stan. It's interesting how some of the terms kind of flip the English meaning on its head - like, a "comeback" in the West is a huge deal and only happens when an artist has pretty much been officially retired for years (even decades) and then makes an unexpected return to the scene.
And "era" too - in Kpop it just refers to each album and all the MVs and appearances and performances related to that album. With 'comeback' and 'era' it's like time is super condensed compared to the original English meaning, haha.

8:56 "Fighting" in Asia means "Let's keep work hard", "Let's keep on doing something". In mandarin is "加油" which is "add fuel" in direct translation. Just like the concept that adds oil/gasoline into your vehicles to keep them running, working. We use this term to encourage ppl to keep going forward, don't give up or feel discouraged.

“Fighting!” Is like a rallying shout. You can say it to others or to yourself to pump you up and continue what you’re doing. It’s the Korean version of the Japanese “ganbatte!”

  • @Sunset553
    @Sunset553 Před 3 lety +8

I was a dancer. I never thought too much about what the audience interpreted, but I was doing my best to do what the choreographer intended. If you watch Save Me/I’m Fine live comeback, (in Korea, every new album is called a comeback, btw) , it might be a good place to start. I believe the lyrics -were written by V upon the death of his grandmother. She had taken him in and arranged for him to attend school in Seoul. His parents farm and needed that help to get him an education. Her loss was significant.-
The song Save Me starts with individuals entering and dancing on their own. Then I’m Fine has a different pace and different amount of working together.
You can interpret just based on what you notice. It’s moving artwork.
The part which is more subtle is how it makes you feel. When I’m not sure what someone else feels, if I move like they do, I can sense it. You can try some of this. Spread your arms, stand wide in front of a window. (or imagined audience). Turn around and change to looking at a wall. Compare the 2. Curl up in a ball in the corner. Compare that to the standing two poses. For extra credit, curl up in the corner with rose petals on your bare feet and compare that to covered feet. lol.
Like other art, different dances have different levels of meaning. Sometimes the meaning is more literal with movement exactly matching the words. I wouldn’t expect a beginner or non-dancer to critique their technique. But you can just say what you notice. In Singularity, some of his dance continues the hand movement with the jacket.
You might notice, at some point, that when Jimin is highlighted or alone, his style appears more polished. He trained in what they call contemporary dance. (or modern dance. it’s more balletic, more precise).
Like lighting, you chose which style to use for a reason. Also like lighting effects, you’re qualified to see the dance and comment on it. For now, what I am curious to hear is if the video changed your interpretation of the song.

It could be related to their music shows. Korea has a lot of music shows and when an artist has new music they go to these shows and perform to promote for a couple of weeks. Usually this promoting period goes from 2 weeks to a month. So with new music, they’re allowed to return to music shows.

It's talking about Narcissi (I think that's how you spell it). He so loved himself that he drown in a lake admiring his reflection. V's dancing was so good in this that he was also put on the dance line which is Jhope, Jimin , Jk and now V. Plus he part of the visual line. He's vocalist, writer, and producer.

I don’t think their MV directors would share their cinematic techniques or how they create concepts for their videos. 🤓 They are HYBE’s in-house creative and artistic team under the management and direction of CEO Bang PD himself. In case you don’t haven’t heard, Bang PD majored in Aesthetics, Visual Arts at the Seoul National University, dabbled in music and songwriting in his high school days. He had a vision, he followed it through by creating BTS. 💜💜💜

Un their albums they have a mix of solo/sub group/duo songs. Bts have been very open about doing that. From what i remember they basically say that they ask each others opinion and whoever they all think the song fits to the most they go wity that regardless of how many members are performing it.

All of the BTS members have that duality where they can switch instantly between their more casual, playful personalities, and their more serious, professional personas. It's really obvious in their behind the scenes content because you can see them playing around like the best friends/family unit that they are one minute, then snap into professional "world star" idol mode instantly when their performance or recording time starts.

8:10 You can reach that by watching their live performances. I had no idea about any knowledge of choreo before I know BTS. And I don't dance at all either. But Jimin and Jhope are the top dancers in BTS, now JK also joins them as well I think. So if you pay more attention to Jimin and Jhope on their movement and how they deal with the same choreo in their own way, you can see the differences. And then when you watch the performances from others, you can feel that.

A lot of people have already said about "Fighting" meaning things like "you can do it", "keep going" and "I believe in you" but I just wanted to mention it is a thing you will likely find in various types of Asian Media. I know they use it in Japan, Thailand and China a lot as well.

Singularity was choreographed by Keone Madrid who's a world-renowned choreographer. Keone's background is hip hop with a lyrical style. It's was hard to see the dance unless you see an actual performance. But, in general, this dance is intricate, hypnotic, and the musicality is kinda unusual. In a run-the-mill hip hop dance, you just connect the dance moves to the beat. But Keone's dances work off beats, lyrics, and in some sections, silence (basically you need to hit the mark where there's no beat or singing to help your timing). Needless to say, it's a difficult piece where you need to understand the musicality, movements, textures, and know when to milk the movements or make it big. Since Singularity is a slow quiet song, it's extra challenging because everything is understated. You have to find a way to show some impact without looking goofy.

I absolutely agree with having a "making of" series with the directors and choreographers of the BTS videos. Personally, I would also like them to explain their filming of the BU in the context of the BU.
I live in Toronto and we have the Toronto Film Festival that takes place every year. One of the best parts of the TIFF is when they host the "In Conversation With" series. Oh man, is it ever-informative to be in the room as directors and actors speak about their filmmaking project. For me, I gain a greater appreciation of their art and the film itself. So yes, I would LOVE to see a BTS Making Of series with the directors and choreographers.

As others have explained, "Fighting" is an expression of encouragement. It reminds me of the Japanese "Ganbatte (kudasai)", which translates as "Do your best", but is used mainly as an expression of encouragement and well wishes to someone who is about to do something requiring effort.
In both the Wings era and the Love Yourself era, each member had a solo song, but they are connected. When people talk about the Wings Short Films, those are actually showcasing the solo songs in the Wings album.
Singularity is part of the Love Yourself era, and I saw a comment one time that really put the order of those solo songs in an interesting perspective. I don't think all of them have music videos, though.

I’m not trained in dancing or anything, I am an instrumentalist, so I get the music, but the way I look at dance is not about this kind of move means this and this type of dance was invented there, but when I see someone dancing, I imagine that feeling from when I was a kid, like a feeling was filling you up, and it was just too big to fit inside you. Remember those emotions that were so big you just couldn’t even deal with them - they felt like they would split you open? When I see someone dancing, I see someone who is moving because of a feeling that big. It doesn’t matter which feeling it is, I’m always impressed that they are able to ride something that I always felt was kinda scary.

One reason for their use of practical effects in a specific scene when it could be done digitally is that it can be replicated during concerts. Watching the live mask scene was amazing. Don't worry that much about understanding dancing. Everyone has their own brains and prevalent sides and whatnot. I myself have all connected, so I'm weird (I love physics, programming and technical stuff, but also love arts, singing, dancing, playing music...). As far as you don't outright diss or insult something you know you are not understanding, that makes you a good person ;) so that's OK. And also you can say you don't like it if you don't like it. Respect comes first, so you are doing great on that part of life :) On the other side, you can always learn more and learn to appreciate things you may have not been inclined to learn before. I am 40 and I learn stuff every day (or month)
I hope also you are pacing yourself with the videos and also that if you are curious about anything, check the one you want from time to time ;) Cheers
