Blanka is so much more enjoyable to me when I’m not controlling anyone on screen and I think that’s terrific, quite frankly

Blanka was the character in your "all characters to master" series that it seemed like you were having the most fun with, so I'm glad to see that you still play him on the side. Also that he's strong in a way that capcom actually intended for the first time in Street Fighter history. This is easily the best version of Blanka.
You must not have played old CPS1 SF2 titles. In Hyper Fighting he was considered top 4 in the game.

CvS2 Blanka is extremely good because of roll cancel, which is a bug. He's mediocre without it.
I do admit that I overlooked Hyper Fighting, though.
Another Blanka weakness he forgot to mention: his parry animation look goofy af. You don't feel like a badass when you land a perfect parry as Blanka in the same way other characters let you feel powerful for that.
Idk I kinda feel like his parry is top tier, the pose makes it look like you're trolling your opponent

This is why I was team no frequent patch. Watching the meta evolve with minimal dev involvement is actually one of my fav things.
Like Blanka being considered a top 5 at the end of season 1 is pretty god damn cool.
I think he was always considered strong though. Him and Honda people thought were busted but Honda was figured out easily. Blanka only got stronger

I agree that it's cool to see the perception of characters shift, but has Blanka actually gotten any results? MenaRD has always been a beast with Blanka but even he doesn't play only Blanka

@@johngleeman8347A way to diversify anti-air strengths. Having a good anti-air, good air-to-air, or good airgrab all feel pretty different to use and to play against.
@@weakhunter13Sure, but how many characters with an air throw don’t have other good anti-air options? Guile? Chun? And then some characters have wildly harder air throws to make work like Gief’s command grab air throw that only seems to work if you spend bar.

his level 2 will corner carry ON BLOCK while destroying your gauge. This character is an easy top 5 for me. That super is so good, I don't think I've seen ONE level 3 from a Blanka player ever be used.
It's almost exclusively used for reversals when it would take the match. I can't recall the last time I saw that.
I use his level three semi regularly. It's really good as you can cancel into it out of blanka ball so generally if I'm using it it's from anti air stand HK, into heavy blanka ball cancelled into level 3. Crouch MP, medium blanka ball level 3 is also good to close out a match as it does chunks of damage. Generally I try to use level two before we get to that point though.
Watching Mena's Blanka at Kumite was the point where I was like, uh, hang on. This doll + Lightning Beast corner pressure thing seems a bit fucked up?

Even if Blanka really is top tier, I say let him rock without nerfs because he's easily one of the most fun characters to watch competitively. Only a few people try to master him and it pays off for them.

@@doctordice2doctordice210The most toxic elements of the moves WERE touched though? Insanely active parry into 50/50 into full damage combo, jumpable blocktring into inexplicably anti-air invuln 2HP? These WERE what made it toxic. You had to perfectly time PUNISHING a parry reversal, you couldn’t really pressure him on oki if you didn’t have a fireball, no other reversal was or is like that. His anti-air game was also insanely good considering he has SEVERAL moves that work as anti air alongside drive parry and amnesia. He literally never should’ve had an anti-air invuln on his 2HP because he’s already insanely good at keepaway AND mixup. This is all before taking his million disjointed normals into account.
I watched your Road to Master series with Blanka. That's when I realized that I can do this too. He's my first Master character.
Blanka's greatest weakness is he's ugly. He if looked like Cammy or Juri we would be top 3 played and ranked.

as a blanka player + fan, i think one of the biggest reasons blanka is so strong is that other characters need to change their gameplan against him or they will probably lose, and fighting game players HATE having to play different (exhibit a: grapplers exhibit b: zoners).
i started playing blanka because he has a fun and expressive toolkit that doesn’t reward mashing (i was addicted to mashing as juri) and because MenaRD is the goat. blanka chan setups aren’t that hard don’t let them intimidate you, and lvl 2 can be oppressive once you figure out how to destroy their drive gauge or create stupid mixups like ur playing skullgirls.
like the jam man said in the vid, play Blanka! he’s super fun with unique defensive tools and if you play him you’ll learn how not scary he is up close and the exploitable gaps. also hopping, spinning and sliding across the screen like a caffeinated shrek will make an opponent who doesn’t know the matchup ragequit and that’s funny.
also you can just do heavy ball over and over until they show you they know how to stop it (disjoints/perfect parry) and mix it up with light ball into throw if they start trying to parry. oh and drive rush hop 2lk is funny too! blanka rules!!
(if we have to nerf him maybe make 4mk slightly less active and reduce the drive gauge damage on lvl2. all my perfects are if i start the round with a good hit into lvl 2…)
Real talk; Blank is honestly one of the most fun characters to watch at high level.

No. Blanka is not fun to watch at a high level. It's a ticking time bomb until Blanka gets access to lvl 2 when he can unleash "it's my turn for a WAY too long period of time" that either demolishes drive meter or just straight up mauls you if you get hit during any sequence.

I often find bag of tricks characters overwhelming to learn but Blanka is the most fun I’ve had with SF6. First character to make me notice the concept of a skill floor versus a skill ceiling.
This only means woolie can rematch daigo

i love how on top of great neutral and normals, easy combos, evasive moves, and trap setups that i dont think have even been fully explored yet, he can also whip out a command grab AND air grab to start getting his grappler game on
omega level entertainment in terms of gameplay, i cant even enough of the goblin
i didn't realize you don't have to charge for the first ball when you're in lv2 install, i need to try labbing this later bc i had always been charging and only going in other directions after getting a hit with it like spiderman in old mvc games
The only thing I find frustrating is instant air ball to anti throw. I know level 2 is definitely way stronger, but that has always frustrated me. Same with Dhalsim back in SF5.
I have been playing blanka almost since release and every charcter I tried since(ed rashid aki) felt half as fun as blanka. I like that his skill floor is low but the cealing is high and how loose he is as a charcter. I love just thinking of something mid-game that I haven't labed and it works, best feeling ever.
This is so vindicating to see, I have been talking with my friends about how this character has like tools for just about everything for the longest. I'm glad that it is finally getting noticed. Pressuring this character who has both a flash kick and a plus on block dive kick out of a backwards jump is unbearable sometimes. The only saving grace is that blanka players rarely ever hold pressure.
Yeah I don't know why they decided to give Blanka the best defensive options of all characters
While the debate about his place on the tier list will rage on, it's no question that his theme is the best in the game. Crazy crazy good.
i'm 1540 mr with blanka rn been playing him since day 1. I'm by no means an elite player but he's very good and so fun to play. i recommend him to anyone whos picking the game up.
SF6 is basically my first fighting game, and I picked Blanka because he looked hilarious compared to the rest of the cast. So when this video popped up, I just read the title as "Sajam's guide on how to play Blanka"

Blanka getting the nerf bat is on my season 2 wishlist. Too much of his braindead stuff isn't punishable or isn't punishable enough. Heavy ball to master isn't a sign of good design.

It’s crazy to me that we’re seeing reevaluations of top characters this far into season 1. I don’t think he’s top 3, but the fact that some top players are putting him up there with Luke and ken is a testament to what a lot of extra time on a version of the game can do
Some of the best AA in the game gets a lot of reward off pretty much any of them. Meanwhile Zangiefs lariat is slow, doesn't hit behind, and you get jack shit off it. The main grip I have with SF6 is the have and have nots when I look at Gief. Its so demoralizing to watch almost everyone get oki off damn near anything they do because drive rush is so good at that and then you have Gief who gets next to no oki off anything and when he does its usually very weak. The complete lack of cancelable normal on Gief and his awful awful hit confirms just feels stanky. If the first big patch doesn't give my boy some love I don't know if I'm going to continue to give a shit about SF6. The haha funny damage on counter hit SPDs doesn't make up for how much of a utter travesty he is everywhere else.
I looove blanka in this game. Its so much fun to play and I never played Blanka before in any other SF
I am terrible with charge characters. I just can't cancel into charge supers and even my special cancels are dodgy. I have a solid Ken/Jamie/Ed...but I want to play Blanka!

1 hour training mode in all characters will give enough framedata knowledge. Watch lots of tournaments. Play sf6 as a job since Sajam’s job is to play fighting games

I love that they gave him a combo off of anti air. The thing I dislike about all modern street games is that jumping in is easy and very low risk, extremely high reward especially in 6. The combos are so easy and so damaging now there needs to be risk for trying it. Dps should be doing more damage or setting up better oki if you have the reaction and skill of anti airing your opponent.
wdym easy and low risk? Jumping is not good, anyone comfortable with their AA moves should be able to deal easily?
@kuro_mori_vt failed jump in is like 8% damage loss, neutral restart. Successful jump in is potentially 60% damage and/or oki on opponent. Jumping takes zero skill, anti air does. I like that Blanca can make you eat a modest combo if you no brain it and jump on him.

Top 3? I'm not so sure, but top 5 probably. Even then the difference from 1-5 is mostly minimal. Even if they shaved his damage down by 25%, he'd still probably be up there just because of level 2 pressure and the situations around it.
Blanka is a very unique character, and I'm always happy when he is a powerful one as well.

People just don’t like it on luke because he’s too simple easy to use and well rounded. Blanka is 100% a harder character to master
it's almost like labbing a unique and flashy mixup (which you have an opportunity to block or parry, mind you) is more interesting than pressing a crouching normal into a BnB.

I was looking forward to seeing Mena play Blanka at Capcom Cup, even though when he did I was disappointed because it might have cost him his tournament run.

The existence of his air ball is honestly insane to me given what they did to divekicks like Jamie/Cammy. Like ok: you want to make divekick not so oppressive and not a "F**** it" option so you put a giant hurtbox below it. Cool...I get it. Why the hell does blanka get to do that then? Also Also: its absolute bonkers how active the frames on some of his normals are. I don't know if he's top tier but he's definitely great and underrepresented.

Remember when people thought Blanka was low tier? I played him a few times at launch and could just feel him being high tier. I just didnt have the patience to figure it all out, but i knew people would. Blanka chan is what really sold it for me but his normals and specials are just good as hell.

For Blanka, the most broken for me is that super level 2 that last too long and that 3 free dolls resource per round and that special dash. Remove one of this and I will call it a nerf 😅
But Capcom said the game is well balanced so you can just ignore what I wrote 😀

For someone who doesn’t play or watch SF seriously I thought he was a troll/gimmick character but he’s so fun
Blanka seems to be at a good point balance-wise. He has a lot of tricky options and is a match-up that rewards familiarity. I don't think he needs any nerfs (maybe some minor tweaks to his grounded anti-airs). I would like to see Capcom's balance team buffing the mid and low characters to bring them up to parity, but more importantly, try to give other characters more options. A character like Lily could easily be buffed up to being a menace, but her game plan is so dry. I hope they give characters more offensive and defensive options, with none of them being the default "best" option.

But he doesnt have a crmk-dr and he doesnt have an insanely good jab. crmk-dr is the meta right now and blanka doesnt have that. Blanka is not top 5.

Super 2 is also not the meta either. You need a good level 3 because combined with critical, you create a 2-3 hit scenario where you win the round. Blanka cannot do that. If you opt for doing a level 2, you lose the damage output and rely on hitting your opponent more than they need to hit you. If you opt for the level 3, blankas offense is weaker.
Blanka is like 6th or 7th at best, but hes not top 5.
Blanka does have a good level 3. It's just his level 2 is godlike. Probably the best super in the game.

One remarkable thing about SF6 Blanka is that he’s insanely entertaining to watch, play and learn. I never thought I would use this character until I saw his SF6 reveal.

Zangief, Lily, and Manon are never going to be considered top tier until things are changed massively for them. Grapplers just don't function very well in SF6 right now, the devs were way to careful giving them decent tools with the drive systems. They were clearly very very scared what grapplers could do with a fast advancing move that makes things + on block. So they controlled for this by making a lot of their normals not cancelable and making their drive rush really short range and slow compared to most other characters. They again were just way conservative with giving them good tools so they don't really have much going on for them right now.
Some people also said Ed is top tier after Momochi got 2400 MR and won a tourney with Ed. But yeah, i really like how Capcom handle the balance in SF 6.

I don't think Blanka is top 3 or 5 but he's top 10 for sure. I can't believe they gave him a command grab, air throw, and air ball which makes his offensive really strong both ground and air. I wonder how Capcom gonna buff or nerfed him for season 2.

People need to stop it with the tier talk for sf6. This game has 8 or so S-tier characters, the rest are A. Game is extremely well balanced. If you claim otherwise you are either people that haven’t played other fighting games. Pro’s trying to downplay their main or upvote rest to make themselves seem better or at platinum and tiers don’t even apply on that level yet.

You don't really need to perfect parry his blanka ball though. All you really need to do is either back jump or DP against it. Any decent anti air will shut Blanka ball down pretty consistently

He's the most annoying player to play against. He can be played in the controlled kaos method and you can't jump in in him. His ex ball air and ex ball are broken he has too many get out of jail things too it's a constant struggle uugh. Def top tier...

the reason he’s not top 3 is because he has very exploitable weaknesses in his pressure, which just isn’t really a thing for the other top tiers. his damage is relatively low without meter (but his meterless anti air damage is higher than avg and gauge gives him great conversions), and he doesn’t have tight pressure without lvl 2 or forcing burnout. he plays at a slightly bigger range than the rest of the cast but when you get in he has a terrible 4f and no 6f or 7f medium. you gotta stick to him like glue and play a patient, steady offense.
i do think he’s a very strong character but i feel like the reason put him as high as top 3 is matchup unfamiliarity and being forced to play in a different way than against a “normal” character. putting him above deejay, luke, or ken is flat wrong and i also think juri (my other character) is stronger (but wayyy less fun)
sajam does make some of these points in the video but i think he went a little light on blanka’s weaknesses (prolly trying to protect my goat MenaRD’s tech lol)
