Has to do with the gravel... a road has a even surface with 1 color.. and this is maybe confusing for the system... i was shocked too, i drive a mercedes c class and this system works flawless for me
@MooseyQ Still, it does not mean that you were forced to read it bud. Maybe you could just ask the OP to add a [SPOILER] banner or somethn instead of whining 😉
If i saw it correctly it was a user error. He was accelerating. As long as he is on the accelerator with his foot the truck doesnt stop because as the driver u can always overrule the ABA by for example using your indicators and switching lanes as well as using the accelerator.
I’m pretty sure the Active brake assist doesn’t work below 20mph. It’s also different to the other systems where it detects moving objects, so it wouldn’t break for a traffic island or a parked car for example. This is probably the reason why it didn’t detect the car and the ABA didn’t kick in. Also it would have struggled to stop on that surface in time if it had kicked in. Great videos mate keep them coming
Active Brake Assist should detect any object that is stationary in front of the vehicle and it does work under 20mph (at least it does in my car anyway). if it was switched on, it should have worked.
If it didnt work for stationary objects then why did the Mercedes rep tell him to stand in front of it? it also works at speeds up to 31mph according to Mercedes
Bootneck, I’ve driven an Actros for the last 4 years, the ABA Doesn’t detect stationary vehicles or road furniture, only things that are moving/slowing etc.
@@Piglife101 Maybe they have updated them this year. I know mine is only a car, but if there is a stationary vehicle at the lights or junction ahead, then it stops. I can't say any fairer than that I'm afraid.
@@Bootneck-RMC my 20 plate merc sometimes does and doesn't show the indicator and beep. It's definitely a good insight into how much kit goes into these and actually being able to appreciate HGV's and their drivers when we see one. Good review pal.

Thanks for the showing us around it. Super-interesting! Loved the control display, and the fact it has features to help you out if the truck gets stuck. The eco-roll and active cruise control is super-impressive!
Just like you can't be confident with normal driver we all can get distracted and similar things. It's very strange in all test's with cars or truck these systems work. Maybe if he did this on road it would work or if he did same test again it should work.
Automatic braking is not meant to do the driver's job. It is meant to ASSIST the driver. Considering that when this tech works, it improves safety, and when it doesn't... it is like a regular car, therefore there is no real downsides to having the tech even if it is not 100% effective in all possible scenarios.
I drive an Actros myself, the active breaking system does stop before hitting cars or anything else, if you set the cruise control. If u stomp onto the gas yourself, it deactivates the active breaking system ✌🏻😅
@Neil doe Just like overconfidence in human drivers. This is why this technology is made to work together with a driver, not do the driver's job for him.

@Happy Thanos Ive been driving a DAF with the braking feature for 5 years, it has gone off many a time driving down dual carriageways. especially if on a slight bend with concrete barriers separating a slip road, also if going under a flyover. Prime example is the central motorway in Newcastle upon Tyne, southbound just before the Tyne Bridge. Actually sometimes dangerous. Also sometimes on roundabouts it slams on the brakes.

As a fire truck driver driving Scania's at the Scottish Fire And Rescue Service, I've been to RTC's involving cars and trucks with the exact same damage and doesn't involve Mercedes trucks but that shocks me.
I am 100% sure that the truck didnt know it has to engage the corresponding breaking system since it wasnt on the road. Happened to me with the active lane assist on a 2019 Audi when the road markings were not so good and the car couldnt read the lanes.
I think that system turns on after 15 mph to allow creeping in traffic, just like the cruise control and exhaust brake etc, There is a manual override switch that could also have been pressed. Either way that was set up to fail on loose gravel as it would have just locked them on
When I tested the automatic breaking system on our Subaru, I used a pile of larg cardboard boxes. Drove towards them at 50 kph. It worked! The car stopped with about 4 centimeters to spare, and I hung in the safety belt! You maybe should have used a pile of boxes also for the test. Those automatic braking systems should not rely on how soft the object is, but always break.
