I’m a USC fan so most Oklahoma fans don’t like us. But I’m actually hoping Oklahoma will be competitive in the SEC. It makes college football more exciting to have Texas and Oklahoma in the running for an SEC title. But they were given a tough schedule. Will be interesting to watch

It's not that we don't like usc fans. I am sure most of you are ok. But like any fan base, you guys have your trash talkers, just as O.U fans have some trash talkers. What we haven't forgotten is the WAY that your coach left, and he gutted our team on his way out. We are glad to have BV. He has always had a love for OU.

No....we dislike your coach. We want to see him fail like he was here slowly but surly. Just so happens in wishing that.....your team suffers. It is a joy to see his hardships now. Truly ........ just sucks for your fan base. Our hard feelings aren't directed at your fan base or team. TEBOW is poison in the well for whoever he coaches for.

8-4 is fair. I'm an OU alum and fan. But we are rolling into a tough SEC schedule against 4 possibly 5 top 15 teams. Most of our difficult opponents have a bye week before they play us. We're playing at different times and locations than we are used to, probably in harsher environments than we are accustomed to. We are starting: (1) a new, unproven-but-talented QB, (2) all new offensive line starters (especially at center), (3) a new offensive coordinator, (4) a new defensive coordinator, and (5) an unproven kicker. To think we're going to be 10-2 or 11-1 is a bit of a stretch. If we do go 10-2 though, give us a playoff spot, no question.

Finally, someone who will take some outside perspective into account when talking about their favorite team. I just think more often than not we get people on here telling us fantasies about their team rather than actually trying to view it from a non bias perspective.
How are you liking Venables as the coach? Also what would you consider a disappointing season for the Sooners this year?

@@theneutralzonepod To be fair. As Charles Barkley says "There are no experts on the future." So one persons fantasy take is just as valid as any other. And you definitely want fanbases being bias. That's what makes college football fun! All this fluff gets settled on the field (unless you're Florida State).
      -
Venables is our guy. We believe in him to the utmost. Would gladly ride to war with him. Not much could change that, but a losing season might. Oklahoma is not okay with a losing season. At this point with the level of investment and recruiting classes, it is unacceptable. I like the attitude and culture he has implemented. It's time to win though. No excuses, play like a champion. Make everyone fear us again, that's all I ask this season. And produce some 1st round talent on the defense, THIS year. You have two major candidates in Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman, highlight them.
Improvements I want to see from him:
      (1) Better game management.
Maximize the time we have on the clock. Hold onto a lead if you have it. Don't call reckless plays that open the opportunity for a comeback. Ex. If you're ahead by two scores in the 4th quarter and start throwing into double coverage. Limit the amount of mistakes that can possibly happen by just simply never giving the ball back.
      (2) Ensuring complimentary football is played. You're the coach, while it may be someone else's responsibility, idc it's your fault if it isn't happening.
      -
      A disappointing season would be:
      (1) 7-5
      (2) Losing to Bama in Norman. They no longer have Saban, if they are vulnerable, now would be the year. Big game, big stakes, big players. You gotta win this one. Because Texas did.
      (3) Losing to Texas is always disappointing.

First off welcome to the channel!
Yes I agree, Venables is a mastermind when it comes to the defensive aspect of the game of football. I’m a massive Clemson fan like I said in the video and we miss him dearly. He has elevated Oklahoma in the defensive department from when Riley was the head coach. While he has the tools to be a coach that players will run through a wall for he has also done a hell of a job recruiting as well.
I’m excited to see how his progression goes in as being a head coach. The contract extension he just received was very much warranted. I hope to see him have more success as a Sooner and make a national championship push sooner rather than later.

TN was tied for 2nd in rushing defense with UGA in the SEC last season, good for 21st. OU was 44th outside of the SEC of course. Their D line has to be able to go 4 deep imo to have a chance at the being better than A&M, TN, UGA and maybe Bama's D lines. I don't see that this season. Soem very good rushign offenses in the SEC and pretty key to winning at a high level in the SEC. The OU rushing D I think will be SEC 4th or 5th giving Brent the benefit of the doubt. But if that offense sputters the D line will be tasked too much with 3 and outs from the offense. They can improve as the season goes along and the offense comes along but sure looks like a do or die schedule. The season will depend on that offense performing under Arnold and their redzone defense has to take a step up coming into the SEC. Great video guys!

BV turned over 80 roster spots in two years. People acting like he just came in and messed it all up, aren't really paying attention. Only a handful of players who left OU, left for a similar program, or even P4 programs, in most cases. We had a ton of dead weight under TBOW, because he recruits small classes, so he can't process out the busts. Then you have iron sharpening plastic, and none of the development process works correctly. Heck, TBOW can't even tackle in practices, because his rosters are so thin.

I think it’s tough to tell, especially when one of the guys we are relying on is a guy who will be a new face to the offense in Burks. I also think this may be a quote on quote down year in the SEC for receiver play compared to what we’ve seen in the last few seasons. Luther Burden is the guy I believe but outside of that you have some guys in the conference but it’s tough to say who’s up there as far as WR rooms in totality.

The 7-5 prediction means OU only wins 2 of their 7 toss up games, that means you think OU will be bad. It's way more likely OU is able to win 3-4 of the toss up games.

OU has some serious challenges this season. 1st year in the SEC and a murderer's row of SEC foe.
TN, AU, Texas, Ole Miss, LSU, MIzzou. Mercy, this isn't much easier then UF's schedule. Let's start with how many of those are projected to be top 15 teams and power Index.
Bama, Texas, Ole Miss, LSU, TN and Mizzou lol.
First off, Dillion Gabriel is a 6th year man, formally coached under Josh Heupel, he's gone to Oregon and Arnold isn't Gabriel and won't be Gabriel for a few years. Problem #1.
Problem #2. The OU defense. 112th in passing defense. Ok, but how were they in that weaker non-SEC conference in redzone D? Not good enough at #37th nationally. The early success was a Dillion Gabriel thing. Once that was gone, the season nose-dived in 23 against Ok St, AZ, and Kansas. Two point winners over UCF and beat BYU by one score. That is a bad sign coming into an SEC schedule like this without a Coach Prime Colorado 80 man replacement, oh,...wait..even than.
45th in rushing defense? Against that lesser conference and teams? The SEC rushing defenses are good.
All of those teams listed above in the last two seasons have had more success in the SEC than OU has in.. that other conference.
Out of those 6 teams I got them going 1-5. All have a QB advantage or a defensive advantage over OU. If you can't rush the ball in the SEC, it's very hard to win at a higher level.
I think OU goes 7-5 in year one.
Problem #3 Home games against Texas, Bama and TN. Unfortunately by stats and depth, you aren't these teams. You needed the home games to be sure wins or closer in talent, depth etc.
Away games: AU, Ole Miss, LSU and Mizzou lol. That is just terrible luck and scheduling. Those teams are very good at home statistically. With this home and away set up, your sure to lose 2 of those 3 home games and likely 3 of those away games and that's being optimistic..
Summary. In football sometimes a team comes out of nowhere and over performs, has the right QB and offensive scheme and it works out. well. The ceiling could be 8 wins, maybe and if they get to that in year one in the SEC with that schedule plus a bowl win, it would be a huge success. If the worst happens, 4-8.

OU has a winning record in Columbia for a reason. MU doesn't get the level of talent that OU does, regardless of how well they did with what they had, last year. Plus, MU lost a lot of that talent, and didn't exactly set the world on fire in the off season.

Keeping DG for his high floor, over a guy with a huge ceiling, would be a defeatist mindset. That loser mentality for fans of teams that aren't blue bloods. If your entire goal, is just to not look bad, then keep DG. But if you are after winning a natty, you go with the guy who is a problem for the opponent, not just a benefit to the offense because of experience.

    • @theneutralzonepod
      @theneutralzonepod  Před měsícem

I don’t think Gabriel just makes you not look bad…. Oregon is a serious threat to not only win the Big 10 but to win the Natty. One thing I don’t agree with is when a player leaves a team fans of the team act as if the player replacing him is better. There’s no way you can sit here and tell me you believe Arnold is a better QB right now than Dillon Gabriel. There’s just no way I can get on board with that logic. Arnold could develop into a good qb at the collegiate level sure but are we assuming that’s what’s going to happen? How many times do we get a qb that’s supposed to be the next big thing but doesn’t live up to that hype? I say that to make the point of , we already know Gabriel is that guy and he can lead a team and play superb football. We haven’t seen it from Arnold yet.

I won’t lie and say DG not being there isn’t playing a factor.
But at the same time we have to take into account the other losses as well. This o line is going to be drastically different than they were last year. Not to say they can’t shock some people and be stellar but of what we know right now it’s hard to be ultra confident in the offense that Oklahoma has coming back this season.
If im not mistake their win total with the oddsmakers are at 7.5. So this is a narrative and isn’t something that only we see.

You’re now the second person to bring up Bedenbaugh. That is a point we missed, honestly. Now with that being said , I responded to a previous commented and admitted that makes me view the lien vastly differently. Now even though I think I’m more confident given your point of the OL coach I can still say the SEC is very tough. It’s not the Big 12, this o line will be challenged week in and week out. Can this like hold up against the rough play of this conference? We will have to wait and see.
But like I said you have a very valid point in which we missed that in our initial preview. The reason we preview is to give our perspective on the team from an outsider. You are a OU fan, you are naturally going to know more of the ins and outs surrounding the program. But to say “do your research” is vague, if you watched the video and the slide show we put together, it’s hard to say do research when that was clearly done. We missed a point that we acknowledged. It’s going to be impossible to preview 134 teams and not miss a beat, or miss a key point. It happens.

@@theneutralzonepod Hey, no disrespect intended, i was committing on your point about the OL, which every one seems to talk about, and to be honest no one can say what will happen till it all starts, August 30,2024 for OU., And really not till Tenn. comes to Norman, for our First ever SEC game as a Sooner Nation. I, still like OU's chances. I have much doubt they end up 6 - 6, or 7 - 5. Like you said, time will tell. Again, just my opinion. P.S. A sleeper........ Remember.

Yeah, I think it was a big deal we missed it. I’m agreeing with you as well. Because like I said it matters greatly. With guys like Orlando Brown, Tyler Guyton, Creed Humphrey all being main pieces to their respective teams. It’s naive to think he can’t develope more talent in house. So it is definitely a good point.
Like I said we hope to see you back though!

And yes, i agree, SEC is tougher week to week. No doubt about it, Buttttttt........ I think that was the whole point of Oklahoma and Texas, tossing their hat in the ring.

@@theneutralzonepod no hate at all I love the difference of opinions, but I could see OU -3… but Auburn will be undefeated most likely, and OU could be coming off a loss to Tennessee (who’s coach played QB at OU, so it will mean more to TN that “just another game”)

    • @theneutralzonepod
      @theneutralzonepod  Před měsícem

@djbarber3449 I think it’s a good matchup. Especially Auburn being at home. I have OU winning but Auburn will not be a cake walk. This is an improved team in a very hostile environment.

@@theneutralzonepod AU had Bama beat, UGA trailed until the final minute. AU is a very hard place to win. And it's crazy for me to take AU's QB over Arnold at this time but I am. Freeze is very good using what he has and everywhere else on this AU team looks better on paper this season. Going to be fun.

Auburns home record is nothing compared to OU's. If you take away Alabama from the totals, its literally nothing special, in the wins and loss column.

Just came across your show & wanted to give you guys some props! Stay with it!! I've already turned your show on to a few other sports guys.
Two CRUCIAL things you guys missed:
    #1 OL Coach Bill Bedenbaugh has the most OLs in the NFL right now & you didn't mention him or his ability to build OL lines; ironically, many strongly believe him to be the BEST O-Line coach in NCAAF, RS freshmen, sophomores in place aren't exactly bums & neverminded true frosh;
#2 Taylor Tatum is the #1 RB in the nation coming in as a true freshman but instead you mentioned a transfer RB and not Javonte Barns or Kaleb Hicks? seems odd.
I could go on but I thought your overview was excellent; however, you can't talk 'nuts & bolts' without a single mention of the great Coach Bendenbaugh, especially, when the OL is your biggest question heading in to 2024. 🦾

That’s a fair statement. Oklahoma has produced some stellar lineman that have been standouts in the nfl on some successful teams. Creed Humphrey, Lane Johnson, Guyton, Orlando Brown , Trent Williams and the list goes on.
So that’s definitely something we could’ve hit on and it makes me view it from a different lense now for sure. We appreciate that perspective as we like to see things from the fans of the teams eyes as well!
