    So the first thing you have to know about a conversation with French people is even before you speak you're wrong. If you attempt to speak English to a French person they will be insulted and pretend to not understand English. If you attempt to speak French to a French person they will be insulted and pretend to not understand because your accent is just impossibly horrible. Only after you have apologized for speaking at all will they declare which language they will engage with you and only then can the conversation occur.

I had a guy come up to me at Euro Park (that’s in Germany) speaking French and I couldn’t understand him so I replied with “Anglais?” and he had to think for a second but he was able to say “do you know what the time is?.” I think I told him like 5 PM haha was probably obvious at the point what country I was from. Dont worry, us English living next door to the French learn French in school, but none of us can speak it either! French classes were the scenes of much dicking around, and no work done in every school across the country!.. Also, little tip I found helped was to always learn how they pronounce 'English' in whatever country you go to, for example the French say it like "On-glay", and usually if they dont speak English themselves, as soon they hear 'English' in their own tongue, they will go find someone who can speak it for you.

    • @Clembo

      Not the same. French know English well they choose not to speaking out of bitterness.

    • @gregorjakopic1853
      @gregorjakopic1853 Před 6 měsíci +4

      @clembo when I worked in rural France I spoke to young people, teenagers... none of them understood English . And it was weird, because English is really not a hard language...It's simplistic and a little boring... but yeah, it turned out that French and English vocabulary both have words that are very similar, but have completely different roots and meaning. So that's why it seems to be very confusing for French to learn English. They did understand Spanish tho.

    • @SpoojFritter
      @SpoojFritter Před 6 měsíci +10

      @@gregorjakopic1853 Totally agree, I have visited France many times and outside of the big cities you rarely hear English spoken (unless it is actually an Englishman complaining that the Vineyard he bought for 500 Euros for his retirement has gone sour, true story! 😁). It doesnt help that a few years ago French Nationalists were decrying the decline of their language as a 'lingua franca', and a whole new generation were raised to be snooty about learning English. The Spanish on the other hand take pride in learning English, you can wander off into the most desolate place around the mountains and find random sheep herders along the way that speak perfect English (yet have never set foot here). That was my reason for learning Spanish as an adult instead (that, and the Spanish women! lol)

    • @MrSymachus
      @MrSymachus Před 5 měsíci +2

      In France and in the UK we (mainly) only have one language, so there are no real incentives for people to learn foreign languages if they do not travel or need it for work.
      Things would be different in a country where an increasing part of the population has another language as their mother tongue. For example Spanish, in the USA...

    • @irnbrlt8427
      @irnbrlt8427 Před 5 měsíci +9

      Hi, French here, 28 years old. Honestly for most of us, we either have been traumatized to talk in english in classes, or in rural areas it is not a big deal to learn english, they don't need it. But first learning english is mandatory only at age 11, for some like me (because I had german as first language) 13.
      Second we don't learn to "speak", we learn to "read" it, and teachers insists *a lot* on the accent and not the prononciation. And well, English isn't really easy on this aspect. Third there is a difference between the younger and older generation, older generation almost didn't have english classes.
      That's how it is.

Modernization of these countries since the end of the Cold War has made many cities in Eastern Europe and Russia more advanced and comfortable in certain respects than typical cities in the U.S., which are dangerous to live in and are falling apart.

I took a week-long vacation of the area in 2017 and drove completely around the Tatras in Poland and Slovakia, in addition to hiking and exploring within the Tatra range itself.

    Hearing that everyone in France forgets their English despite it being so international is surprising... idk maybe it's from historical french pride? Or just literally never using it? From school I think I'd do well in languages as I was in French immersion from 5 years old till 11 (all of primary school), but only used it at school at a young age and never really used it outside school. And yet I can remember how to read, can understand decently well even if it's spoken pretty fast, and speak decently with a good accent. Idk maybe I should get back into languages
    Something really cool that you can do by knowing French (because they have SO much history and French as a language has basically remained the same overall for a long, long time) is you can read quite old original historical documents. One of the absolute coolest things you can read is Napoleon's personal journals in their original French!! To me that's not just amazing but special. You can go online and read them they have been scanned and uploaded for anyone to read.

      Thank you for acknowledging our history you are a brave man. If you want a french student perspective, here is the truth about english language.
      The main reason why we don't like to talk english is firstly because it is seen as a mondialistic citadine gay parisian thing, especially in the rural part. We do mock the ones that put english words in their french sentences, especially the business related words, it is a cultural meme. I have this scene of a Louis de Funes film of the 60s where he talk in an approximative english which is hilarious. The other reasons are linked to our historical hostility with England and the lose of the seven years war. Talking english is a bit like talking the rival's language so it is question of pride. Maybe this has led to the fact that for a long time, in the schools, they didn't teached us english, also because we don't needed it. It is also recently with all the mondialisation and tourism that it has been a priority. But in France english lesson is a joke for my generation. It is a low priority matter and during class everyone shouts and mind his own business instead of working, while in the other classes they are well behaved. Teachers are usually women who make us do group projects (they are funny but in the end we don't learn too much).
      In my case, I learned english since my 8 years old thanks to some lessons in school, the British Council, but mainly with films, video games and memes. Since I live in the capital, I am often arrested by lost foreign tourist who ask for the way, and I'm glad to answer them in english, even if I don't like english monopole and the fact that they are forcing us to speak their language. When I go to a different country I speak their native language not mine it is a question of education !
      Well, in the end, I'm sorry for the American who come here and are pissed because nobody speaks English but it is what is. And lucky for you, the things are changing because more and more french are talking english particularly because of Internet, but I would always prefer an English-speaking who makes the effort of talking french.

    We learned French in the UK when at school but a tourist from France will be lucky to find anyone in Britain who can speak French. This thing is a two-way street. I find that if you make an attempt to speak French in France (or the Walloon area of Belgium for that matter), 90 per cent of the time, you will find someone who will try to communicate in English back to you. As with most countries, the friendlier folk will be found in cities and towns other than the capital. So both Paris and London have their own brand of snootiness. Having read the comments on French people. I am a little dismayed . Paris is a capital city. You can’t judge French people by Parisians, Americans by New Yorkers, England by Londoners. Get on a bus in Newcastle and by the time you get off, you know everyone. Get on a tube in London and no one will ever smile, unless they are a tourist or from the North.
    I have lived in Central France for three years. Couldn’t speak a word. Now I am completely fluent . I made an effort. French people here are really friendly. But rarely speak English because they can’t. What now pisses me off is the English people who have lived here for 20 years or more, who don’t integrate with the French, don’t make the effort to learn French and bitch about England and Brexit. Personally, I think that it is arrogant and insulting to expect people in a foreign country to speak English. The French don’t bitch about English people not speaking French when they visit London which they do a lot (and for some reason absolutely love the shit hole). They have nothing but good things to say. I don’t like French politics and French protectionism. Due to their history of surrender, they have a chip on their shoulder. They are very proud of being French. They are very family oriented. Kids and teenagers (outside the big cities are incredibly respectful) I have not seen one example of anti social behaviour in three years. Not one in three years.. I prefer the Dutch and the Germans who know how to have fun. But the French outside of the big cities are definitely less arrogant than the brits or Americans.

    Small correction, at 6:27, you're not located in the tatra mountains but between the Mala Fatra and Velka Fatra national park on the road E50 near Ratkovo village

    Describing Slovakia as 3rd world and part of the former USSR really gives credit to the channel name 🤣
