There are at least a few that criticize Karl Richter's interpretation of Bach, his authenticity to Bach, his choice of tempo, etc.
I personally am not one of them, I don't know why, other than, to my ears, Karl Richter is the most pleasing to me, and recordings like these are just wonderful and uplifting.

Karl Richter played from the hearts core. May he rest in peace with his mentor Bach

The strings sound very distinctive in this performance that I can actually hear the different melodies. Other performances sound like string mush.

This concerto is an arrangement of Vivadi's Op. 3 no. 10 from L"estro Armonico and that proves the respect from Bach to his contemparary composers. Bach did love all good music. That could not be said of Strawinsky and Mahler for example....

Why what did Strawinsky and Mahler do (or not do)?

Just glorious! I always enjoyed this version. Ever since it appeared on Vinyl and on CD I simply could not do without it. Even when playing the original Vivaldi concerto back to back, this remains one of the perfect transcriptions by Bach. And when Karl Richter is involved with it, it simply becomes a heavenly experience. Pity that in this day and age everyone wants to be a perfectionist and interpret such pieces "as they should have been", when in reality, most of them lose out on passion and feeling; something that in the age of Bach, and even later, with Beethoven was more important than playing by the numbers. Today it's technocrats who play. Back then, it was people with heart, mouth, deed and life (Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben).

Does anyone know for certain that Bach would have preferred the instruments of his time to that of ours? And if he would, since there is very sparse interpretative markings inscribed in the composers of the Baroque Period's music, whose to say that Richter's interpretation is less "authentic." For my money, he is the best! I miss him.

@@helensilver1381 may I say... not only Richter is Bach's best interpreter, but the last great Leipzig-tradition exponent. Even though some other recordings could be more fashionable, they often lack seriousness and depth. Leonhardt may amuse the listener, but Richter truly inspires.

You and David Bauer are most correct: we must never forget that authenticity of instrumentation, tempo, size of performing forces, etc., can never convincingly substitute for authenticity of feeling. The musicianship and drama here seem most authentic, indeed!

    Greetings.
Excellent as soloist as director of this work transcribed from Vivaldi. In addition to K. Richter , was an excellent organist and harpsichordist , he gave a pure, energetic, masterful "German touch" in every movement of this work
With my best wishes for all people.

This is the Op. 3, Concerto for 4 violins, in B min composed by Antonio Vivaldi, which was later transcribed by Bach for four harpsichords in a minor tonality…do not forget that Bach was a great admirer of Vivaldi.

+Adrian-Irinel Aciobaniţei +Adrian-Irinel Aciobaniţei The other way around: this is BWV1065 for four harpsichords in A minor by J. S. Bach, based on Vivaldi's concerto for four violins in B minor RV 580. What you hear here is not, by any definition, Vivaldi's Op. 3, any more than the Magnificent 7 is 7 Samurai - even though the former is a remake of the latter.

In Bach's transcription of this splendid concerto for violins by Don Antonio VIvaldi (Op.3, No. 10, in B minor), the music sounds like a most beautiful concerto for four sewing machines! ;) Magisterial conduction from the keyboard by Karl Richter.

While I love Richter's work and appreciate this performance, the tempo of the 2nd movement I believe is just wrong. My vote for the perfect interpretation of this great piece is by the Virtuosi di Roma, (Collegium Musicum Italicum) from 1967.
