  • The Top 10 Causes of Kidney Stones | The Cooking Doc®
    What are the top causes and risk factors for developing kidney stones? As a kidney doctor, this is a question I get a lot from patients. So this week I am going to share my thoughts on this painful subject.
    Lots and lots of people will develop kidney stones at some point in their life. It is estimated that 20 percent of men and 10 percent of women will have a kidney stone by the time they reach the age of 70. Some topics I will be covering in this week's video:
    - Where in the United States are kidney stones more prevalent?
    - The kinds of kidney stones from calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, uric acid, struvite and cystine.
    - Risk Factors for developing kidney stones.
    - Will eating high calcium and high oxalate foods increase your risk of kidney stones?
    - Does family history of stones increase your risk?
    Find out my answers by watching the video and hear changes you can make to help keep those kidney stones at bay.

    Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.
    The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
    Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and CZcams sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 CZcams subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

    I was in the ER yesterday for over 6 hours. I had to wait over four hours in pain before they ran a CT scan. At age 64, it’s my first time ever having kidney stones. They are rare in women, but the physician’s assistant in the ER said she had never seen this … I have 3 stones and they are on both sides. On the right side I have a 4mm stone and on the left side I have two stones, one 2mm and the other 8mm. They sent me home with Oxycodone which hasn’t touched the pain! I feel like I’m going crazy with the pain. Of course, it happened going into the Christmas holiday weekend, so I can’t contact my urologist until Tuesday. I don’t know how I’m going to survive the non-stop pain for three more days!

      I had a 9.6 mm stone that was surgically removed. It was the most excrutiating experience in my nearly 60 years of existence. The doctors had to insert a stent in my urethra, and its removal was traumatic for me. Anyway, I use a product called, "Stone Stopper" and it has mitigated what I consider kidney stone back pain. Every once in a while, I also take vitamin B6 (25 mg., if you can find a lower dose, you may want to consider that) instead. Every day, I drink lemon/lime slices in water (drink with straw) and magnesium citrate, potassium citrate, and sometimes I will add 1/2 or 1 teaspoon of food grade citric acid. I drink at least one gallon of water, daily: an increase from 2 liters. There are some people who drink apple cider vinegar with the mother, diluted in water, lemon slices and organic olive oil.
      I hope someday, science will be able to allow us to eat oxalates without forming stones.

    I’ve had a few rounds of kidney stones. All calcium oxalate type. I also have high calcium in my urine and Doc has me on 2 water pills for it. Barely lowered the calcium level in my urine. Also have low potassium as a result of the water pills. Even on prediction for potassium chloride and it doesn’t seem to be doing anything as my potassium level won’t budge. There HAS TO BE SOMETHING ELSE wrong. I’m told no. Soooo frustrating.

      If its your first and only stone some diet changes may help avoid another stone. However, its possible you have other already resting within the kidney. The biggest thing is to make sure your drinking enough water. Coffee is something you might want to reduce or chase it with an equal amount of water.

      Great job Mary! I am proud of you for making some great changes. There are so many ways to season food without reaching for the saltshaker. As you cut back - you will notice the less and less you will need to flavor your dishes.

    I've been dealing with significant amount of kidney stones. Typically small but the frequency has gotten out of hand. I've been getting them monthly now. Sometimes 5 within a month. Even after making some of the diet changes. Increasing citrate seems to help make them smaller. Something weird that happens is they will pass into the bladder and then I never feel anything come out. Which seems a bit alarming. Going to the specialist will cost me a significant amount of money so I need it to be worth going to get my urine analyzed. From what I understand there isn't any medication that helps. Just diet changes. So what would the point be if all they are going to do is suggest things I already know? Sorry, this has been very frustrating for me.

      Where is this stone resting ? That is critical to know. Yes within the kidney they do typically leave them alone. Within the ureter that is dangerous for the damage they cause there. Its been years makes me assume its within the kidney.

      @exowye Před 3 měsíci +1

      Actually was confused with this as red meat has zero oxalates which is the primary cause of stones. So it doesn't makes sense about putting blame to red meat when actually the reason behind could be the salt used for it.

    This doctor is wrong on at least two items here. No 1. Red meat does NOT equate to having more stones nor is salt mean you will have stones. My mother went to the hospital for hyponatremia because she was told by doctors to have a low sodium diet beaten into her brain! Salt is a NECESSITY for life and good health. It is part of the electrolytes needed!

    • @hijack29
      @hijack29 Před 5 měsíci

      There is not enough research in this field and doctors are still following outdated information. Or maybe it's a very profitable bussiness to treat it through surgery and medications for whole life rather than to find a true cure for it.

    • @Isa_Dark_
      @Isa_Dark_ Před 5 měsíci +1

      You're right! Generally the excessive sodium consumption is because of the high processed food like sausages and ham (they're high in sodium) and NOT because of the salt that we add to the food when we cook daily.

    • @drecool85
      @drecool85 Před 4 měsíci

      Probably the nuance is processed salts like table salt, not normal salt in health foods & stuff like sea salt. also depending on other health conditions sodium intake has to be taken into consideration relative to the kidney stone.
