-- SP404 SP404A SP202 MFX Tutorial --
I simply cannot resist the pitch control on 202 so many things running through its pitch control sound more interesting than any plugin that does the same thing. I actually was surprised to see so many people agree.
Yeah man, 100%, it’s so smooth n natural, probably the simplicity of it’s algorithm. I’ve found it really easy for matching samples from different keys too when working on the 303/404.
202 has the better pitch fx lol
100% Everytime.
Nonjuror hell yea. I was able to pick this up and the 303 to compliment my 404sx. My next sp is the 404 og. I heard it compresses samples better than the sx.
@@XxBeAnS217xX legit, it definitely has different sounding recording pre-amp, like it's own personality. That 303 tone though....
this was the only reason i owned a 202, real shit lol
@@ruffiankick Real shit.
One thing I noticed from comments on this video and other videos is that everyone likes the pitch control on the 202. I bought a 404 recently and I have a SP-606. The pitch control on those units sound robotic.
Yeah, the pitch on the 202 is more like speeding up or slowing down tape style pitch shift, the 404 pitch isn’t the most useful thing it does...
@@Nonjuror thats because the 404 is locking the bmp so u can hit ur effect live. If u hit ur bmp button and adjust ur samples time while u pitch u get smoother results. It is a timestretch/compresion tool that is on by defult in the 404
@@tbag419does it work w/ the 303?
Your video sold me on the 202!
It’s the best, if mine ever died I’d buy another same day…
I learned so much from u bud. Thats why im here on ur channel bigging up the 404 pitch. Needs some revision as the whole comunity is using the pitch wrong
the pitch on 202 sounds smooth as cheeks
well put!
U can change the bpm of the pitched sample that causes the sound atrifacts while pitching. Its because the sp404a is locking the bmp too for a live effect. Hit that bpm button and change the time stretch while pitching up and down
Holy crap, that’s genius, I hadn’t thought of that…crazy! Cheers for that! 🍺🍺🍺🍺
@@Nonjuror bro i knew u wud like this. U can turn it off. Had to hit u up with this man. Thsnks for teaching me about the sp404 and making all these sick beats bro u the man
@@Nonjuror im messing about with it. Its still graining up alot. Its not the same. I was wrong! turning off only sounded ok on the sample i was using maybe or i did it differnt. Still have gotten smoother pitches like this but turning it off doesnt do what i thought
Haha this is def a dope thing I wish a knew about earlier, I’ve been trying it out the last couple of days n it’s kinda cool to try to find a sweet spot. You doing pitch then time or time then pitch?
@@Nonjuror thats a good point. Probably a heavy mixture of both. Scatterbrained
Great video as usual bro! I have a SP-404A along with my MPC Live, but I'm trying to decide between the 202 and 303 next!🙏🏾✊🏾
cheers man, much appreciated! So when it comes to how I've come to lean on the dr samples, 202 is always my starting point, I sample almost everything with that before chopping it up on the 303/404. That said, the 303 it really irreplaceable for at the end of the process, after I'm done on the 404 using the 303 to add it's colour to the master is wicked af.
If you want to listen to some SP-202 music check out the SP-202 Crew on Facebook. We welcome all. The 202 although limited is an amazing sampler. I usually pair mine with a OG404 or 303
I hear that, I almost always sample to the 202, tweak it then put it on the 404 to cut up.
Is this the FB group - facebook.com/groups/1567726230146195/
that's so crazy that the 202 has a better pitch adjuster
Yeah man, crazy is the word for it!
I saw your Batman beat video the other day my first time seeing these machines & now I want one you inspired me lol
They’re pretty fun to figure out how far you can stretch what you can get out of them!
202 fo life!!
Hell yeah
i love on the voice trans when you're like "it's kinda...you know" . My mind immediately went to the word "shit". It's kinda shit.
Boss SP 202 unbeatable when it comes to pitchin'
100%. Smooth while you can still hear the individual samples being pulled apart.
great tutorial! appreciate the insight.
Cheers man, thank's for checking it out! Much appreciated. If there's anything else you're curious about and want me to try to explore, feel free to let me know - I'm down to have a crack at anything.
You gave me an idea, I’m goIng to try and use the chromatic pitch shift a little more To see if it accurately pitches In whole and half steps So I can keep track of what key I’m transposing into. I usually Just use pitch on drums.
Lemme know how it goes!
@@Nonjuror I’ll tell you a trick I learned on my technique turntable yesterday, if you speed the pitch slide up to the 6 exactly where the middle black line on the slider is then it’s a whole step and a half step.
Nice. I’ve been sampling at 45rpm to the 202, dropping the pitch all the way, rec that to the 303/404 then back to the 202 again, then you just need to drop the pitch again just under a half step to get it back to it’s pitch at 33rpm
Amazing✨
Daam I miss my 202 about to cop a new one 🔥
Thanks for this one.
Thanks man, appreciate it!
So the OG 404 has a pitch button where the sx has a voice trans button. Have you tried the 404 or know anything about the pitch function on it?
I haven't use the OG's pitch but from what I understand it has the same parameters as the MFX 21 Pitch on the SP404A - Pitch, Feedback and Balance. I don't know if they sound the same though.
@@Nonjuror thank You for the reply.
202 is way better because of the sample rate and the fact that the pitch fx works like a turntable . tho 404 has a campiness to it
For sure, 100%
Thank you for these informations !
Cheers man, thanks for checking it out!
I love your music and skills on the sp, this is really great. Hope to hear more soon :) I'm hesitating sometimes to buy a sp404 and play my music with it but it's hard to figure out how, in the details...
Thanks for the kind words, most appreciated. I've seen you sampling jazz guitar chords, respect. Where in France are you based? If you have an questions about what the SP404 can do as a performing musician I'm happy to try to answer, it's pretty cool and I like it in concert but not as sophisticated as, say, an MPC Live might be....depending on what you're trying to do.
@@Nonjuror I actually have a Push 2 for which I've programmed modules to play my songs live, but I'm always hesitating to try to get rid of the computer on stage. Sp is great for that, but my songs are made out of many different loops / parts sometimes and I don't see how playing it without the feeling of just having to trigger a "backing track". This is hard to determine, and this is what I like about your music on SP (aside from the music itself which I really love), the fact you play drums, sometimes record patterns, etc. I'm torn between the two worlds. I'll try things, I got a SP404SX which I borrowed at work, so hopefully I can find solutions... We'll see !
I'm based in Bourges, which is a small town in the center of the country, but well known from its music festival "Le Printemps de Bourges". Great opportunity to discover new bands every year !
@@OPSCL Cool, I get it. the SX as almost identical to the A so that should give to exactly an idea what it can do. Where possible I try to setup my performance on the SP so I can play around with it (using loops / fingerdrums / samples / sequencer etc) opposed to just being like karaoke with a guitar...good luck dude! Ha, yeah - Bourges is right in the middle! I'm just over the German border in Freiburg, if you're ever in the neighbourhood hit me up!
Hey I got a Public Enemy tshirt just like yours!
Salute! 👊
I bought another 202 off the back of your vids man
Nice! Legit game changer for me, it’s one of those things where I’m not exactly sure who or what it was designed for in the 90s but I use it every day.
@@Nonjuror Do you know where I can find a media card for the 202?
@@rashodlewis2918 I bought mine on ebay when I was in the US for a few weeks, here in Europe they're a little more scarce and expensive. It's the sort of thing that you can google "sp202 5v smart media card" and get a different result each week.
@@Nonjuror ok that’s cool. I have a SP-202 and I always wanted another media card but they don’t make them anymore. Just wanted to see if you had luck finding them.
same workflow! good video
thanks man!
Ok .. I really might get a 202 now!!
legit, if mine broke I'd try to buy another immediately, I use it everyday
great video man thx, could you make a video showing the vinyl sim on the 404A? im about to buy it but i cant find any video showing the vinyl sim, i would appreciate that so much 🙏🏻 , subscribed!!
Cheers! Yeah, man, can do. I'll do it this week. Do you have any particular types of samples you want me to play with?
Nonjuror yiiia, awesome bro.. i think it would be great to hear on any jazz piano/guitar samples, greetings from Barcelona 🤙🏼
@@nicolasnovella1451 Sounds good to me
Can you use the 202’s pitch on external source without sampling? like the other effects on the fly with something just playing
Nope, sadly not - only on what is sampled. That would be dope af tho.
Cool thanks for the reply appreciate it and keep going with the videos always enjoy them
@@cristiannegron5068 Cheers mate, thanks for watching!
Old school wins again 👍
damn straight!
@@Nonjuror I have most of these samplers at one time or another and I got to say I do like the older ones better I had the SP 202 and the SP 303 I currently have the boss dr. Sample SP 505 I believe I forget the number but it's a silver one and it got blue ridges around it that thing is awesome I'm never getting rid of that one
I really like what I've seen so far of the SP 505. What sort of things does it do better than the other?
@@Nonjuror it has more memory to record than the SP 202 and SP 303 plus it has a built-in drum machine with four track that's just dedicated to the drum machine. plus it has the green LED screen which is very easy to read and maneuver through. You can get it on eBay for like around $200 to $250 it's a great buy
@@D.Z.A.-kp8lf I'm very curious now. How's the pitch shift?
dope channel dude
Cheers, man!
Hello, and thank you a lot for the post, very informative. I was thinking if it would be possible trigging the samples in the SP-404 in different pitches (or notes) from an external keyboard, in a similar fashion as the vintage E-Mu samplers. Do you (or anyone) knows that?
Dude, that would be dope AF. I don't think so but maybe if via MIDI you can control the Pitch MFX controls...you could maybe pull that off. Maybe?
@@Nonjuror Yeah, I'm almost sure that you can use an external kb and associate pads to keys, but my interest is in playing the same pad sample in different tones, using the keyboard for that purpose. I am still in doubt if I will purchase the SP-404 for that one single reason (I want to play Depeche Mode-like stuff), otherwise it would be almost useless for me. Thanks for the help!
Dope!
I wish the 404 had the same pitch control 😭
yeah man, me too....everyday
It does. Its also using a timestrech/compression tool thats on by defult. Change ur bpm on ur sample while pitching up or down for better results
U can turn it completly off for 202 style pitching. Bmp button control 1 hard left
@@tbag419 thats not at all how that works haha the sp404 will only ever adjust the pitch and time separately. The sp202 functions like a vinyl pitch slider. As the pitch lowers, it also slows down. Which preserves the quality of the sample. When you time stretch, or pitch shift without affecting the speed, it creates artifacts, and the algorithms on the sp404 can't handle it, and it sounds like ass pretty much every time
@@Randuskidoes the 303 behave the same way?
I have yet to find what the voice trans effect sounds good on.
You and me both muchacho
Try it on some drums, you can add some subtle or xtreme character that sounds good sometimes, but I cant think of much else practical uses for it
I don’t use it for beats but when I’m making a psychedelic tune on my sp555 it can add a really cool effect. But like it says it’s designed for voices. It’s so dope when used for trippy little effects
@@obdeisibcirrus993 I’ll keep that in mind. Funny story, I tried out for a psychedelic band playing keys with my sp303. They said at the time the only thing that was worth a damn was the sp303 and not my piano skills lolol they’re right it was like 9 years ago and you are right as well, the sp is excellent for psych music.
Awesome
So it doesn’t ruin the sample like the 404 it’d be great to not need an mpc or iPad just to pitch samples.
Yeah man, it’s crazy they changed it after the 202 to what it is now on the 404...
ICE nice 👍🏽
Thanks man!
i got the 404a... and i dont know. its great but pitch shifting on a mpc is way better and easier. i feel like pitch shifting should not be part of MFX. its such a basic function it should be right next to the lofi button.
I agree, MPC pitch shift SMOKES the 404a's. I definitely miss being able to take a bass note then pitch it chromatically across the 16 pads.
@@Nonjuror me too man. I think im going to buy a cheap 500 just for those functions even tho its only 12 pads on that one
Is there a difference between 404 a & 404 sx is one between than the other I plan to but one of them soon and would like some advice from someone who knows more about them
Nah man, A is pretty much an SX with a paint job.
The way is to have both- no comparison required
and the SP-404A do not change the tempo
I dont get it, so whats the button "tap tempo" does?
SP 202 og
ay great video! Also mind if i ask where the sample is from
Cheers, man. No worries - "I Surrender, Dear" by Oscar Peterson.
What's the difference between the 404 A & SX ? Thanks.
Not too much that I'm aware of, 404A is more or less the SX re-branded as part of Roland's Aira series to work with the TR-8 (the modern day 808). Pretty much the paint job...
Thanks@@Nonjuror, your input is much appreciated.
@@Nonjuror I recently bought a SP 505, although I planned on getting a 404 SX.
@@djekse What's the pitch like on the 505?
@@Nonjuror nothing like the splitting of sounds of the 404 A. It's also because it cannot chop samples in stereo.
202 sounds better than the V Synth- WTF!
Hahaha
Thanks for this video brother. Any secret 404 tips you wanna teach??
HypeBeast Dad cheers for checkin it out! I’m an open book - if there’s anything you think of that you want to know more about or how to tackle a situation just hit me up.
Nonjuror I’m just wondering as someone like me with a SP404SX what would I gain adding a 303 or a second sp 404a to my arsenal
Hmmm....the SX & A are very very very similar, there isn’t much one can do the other can’t.
I really like the feel of the 303 pads and has an option for 22kHz sample rate which I’m a fan of it’s sound. It’s big offering is it’s vinyl sim, a lotta dudes write their beat on the 404 then record it onto the 303 for that.
I still use the 202 on about every beat I make coz of the sample rates and pitch.
Nonjuror thanks man think imma find a 202 and 303 to play with. I seen some 303s online recently.
How to import sounds to the SP202 Still new to it
Recording through the line in is the only way, I don’t think there’s a way to copy to the card from a pc.
0:52 lowering the pitch as it decreases the tempo
does the pitch effect work on stereo samples?
Yep yep, it does
We cant see the screen, way too much reflex, you should use a filter on your lens, it will improve alot your videos!
SP-404A bro you keen do a loot of thinks whit it. sry for my english
sp 202's pitch shift is much more organic
yeah man, 100%
they should have called it the pitch shiter
Haha yep
SP202>>>>>>>>>>>>> not even close
100%
Charlie Brown😒
In conclusion the 404 pitch shift is trash, and the 202 pitch shift is acceptable.
You have the most american British accent I've ever heard
Australian. Just not the type the sounds like they want to wrestle a crocodile.
@@Nonjuror oh haha I really couldn't pin point it
Rdavidr
the sp-404a, 404sx and even the sp-555 are trash compared to the sp-202 when it comes to pitch. the DJFX Looper is the closest thing to the 202, but still isnt as good.
sidenote: ive owned all the main Sp's (303, 202, 404sx, 505, 555) except the OG 404 & the Sp-606.
Crazy, right? They had the ball n they fumbled....
@@Nonjuror 🤣 fumbled it with the Ext.source Resample capabilities of the 303 & OG 404, and the even fucked up with the vinyl Sim when the moved to the 404sx (getting rid of the compressor knob and turning it into a range knob)
its almost like they were catering to EDM musicians or something...
...oh wait, they were 🤣🤣
@@ruffiankick 100% That shit they put on that loop master's SD card was NOT for anyone I've ever met with a 404....and, yeah, the 303 and 404 OG vinyl sim with the really really wide wow flutter and that compression....why change that....
I had the 606 and it had the same pitch as the 404. It is so aggressively more than just pitch unlike the great balance the 202 has pitching.
