My neighbors when I was in grad student housing in Massachusetts were a married couple, the guy from New Zealand and the gal from Japan. She was pregnant with their first child. Unfortunately, they were not getting along very well. When they moved from Japan to New Zealand, she said she hated it there and wished they were back in Japan. Then they moved to Australia, and she started saying she hated Australia and wished they were back in New Zealand. Then, when they came to America, she hated it here and started saying Australia wasn't so bad after all! They had terrible shouting matches, with him saying "YOU F----G B-TCH!" and so forth. Once I went over there to ask her to write some kanji for me (I was studying Chinese history at the time) and she was quite unfriendly and said, in broken English, "I'm preg-a-nant!" which I guess was her excuse why she couldn't write a few characters on a piece of paper for me. (Ultimately she did do it.) I felt sorry for the both of them. Maybe I felt more sorry for her, but I will say, she was not very likable, whereas he was a nice, laid back New Zealander.
Then again, I also knew a couple who had a very charming and exuberant young boy, around 10 years old; she was Japanese and he was a retired U.S. Army guy, on the older side. They seemed to have a good relationship; he called her his "Minister of Finance" and accepted that her role was to control the money, while he was evidently receiving a nice 20-year military pension and was in town to do a degree in Japanese art history. Very nice people and they seemed to get along, perhaps because he was older, so he was mellow and loved his wife and was happy to let her run the family and raise their son as she saw fit.
Yeah it's difficult and people should be very careful getting married in Asia because expectations are different from in the West. Even in the West, with equal relationships and shared household duties and shared financial duties, people fall out of love and split up all the time. I don't know which system is better, honestly.
Cross cultural marriage is hard, even if it's same country but different cultures/backgrounds. A lot of compromises and understanding need to be done, even when both has embraced a modern western way of living. Well, that could be said for any marriages, but it is especially harder for couples from different backgrounds. Those who can overcome their differences and reach some kind of compromise would really help the marriage. It sounds obvious, but it's damn hard. It could takes years, and they will need to be able to last until they reach that point

However, my Japanese wife and me are living in Germany since 2000 and are married since 25 years in 2023. November 8th if this is of some significance to anyone. We had our up and downs and some cultural misunderstandings. Well, that is the way... BUT, we still have a common understanding and two adult daughters. My wife is 'Todai', she has a degree from Tokyo University. Which means not very much to me. I am a graduate from TU-Berlin and held talks all over the world on conferences AND I still love her, even what Meshida pointed out in the video applied to us. No S... after our children were born, a big change after we had our first child and then the second. BUT easy, it was upsetting me and was, all in one, a misunderstanding of cultural differences and I still love my wife. Can also happen to you in another cultural environment, even your own. Exchange with the other sex, can be challenging, is my experience. Mostly lead by misunderstanding. However, we are still together and we still love each other. But I see this as a mutual respect, between two humans and not as a difference between - so called - Western and Asian culture. Respect between woman and man is all there is, or human beings in general. Just my two cents after nearly 60 years of - also - intercultural experience in this world.
This doesn't change anything in what Meshida said in his video about Japanese culture. I can only agree, but this doesn't mean that this could not be changed!

Lack of true communication is probably the root of most Japanese marital problems. And it's not because of the language barrier if a foreign spouse is half of the marriage. If both husbands and wives would focus on satisfying the needs of their partner, there would be far fewer sexless marriages.

Vietnam too. Western people don't realise Asian women often have more financial control than Western woman. It's harder to financially abuse an asian woman. I've known asian women who are bad with money but if the husband doesn't let her handle it then it's pretty much asking for a divorce.

One of my brothers married a Japanese from Maizuru. When they came to visit us in Italy she was constanty naggig him even in public. Initially, when they were just boyfriend and girlfriend, she looked so sweet, elegant and demure. However, after their wedding, she changed completely: she doesn't want him at home, takes his entierly salary leaving only little for him. Refuses to have children while my brother was very keen on kids. She buys most of the food from kombini.We are astonished. I am also married to an Englishman and he would never tolerate such a behaviour from me. In order to understand such a methamorphosis my brother and I started to learn Japanese literature and we came across novels written by Tanizaki Junichirou, particularly "chijin no ai". it was enlighening.

The situation you depicted is similar to the situation in Post WWII USSR. The main difference, however, that Japan looks like a future dream country and USSR outside 5-7 large cities looked like a gray piece of sheet.

Actually even though monogamy is wise for a King and very beautiful, many cultures especially Israel allowed women to be married and faithful to 1 Man, the children were also given great work outs and had to excel at work to become successful with family support lol if the family chose to be lawful honorably Holy good that is. The problem is pride and a wrong perception that is manufactured by corrupt people with wealth or arguably stolen wealth in a system people choose to play within by faithfully trusting their process. The Wise scenario would be for 1 Man to have 2-3 wives that can share their creative expression building a family while having less chores etc. because the work would be divided. That would also allow women to be happier/fulfilled while having more time for family events and career opportunities. Also they need to allow young people 12+ types of jobs with mentorships or farming opportunities.
