Epiphone's game has been seriously on point. I'm tempted to say that they may be pushing out Gibson's lower end segment of the market with how good the Epi's are getting. Now I just wanna see Epi release a Firebird III with the Vibrola.

Love it if Joe nudged Epiphone into doing a 1964 Firebird V, 2 pick-up model. Gibson has been wasting a lot of good wood making Firebirds with new type tuners and a relocated jack plug...YUK! As some have said here only Gibson custom shop FB's come as close at 5 times the cost! I agree!

His playing has always struck me as technically excellent, but in a way, sterile, and lacking real soul. His live shows almost feel like a Broadway play about a blue-rocker instead of the genuine thing. Sounds and feels really good here, tho, and that EpiBird sounds killer!

I just got my Bonamassa Firebird this morning. I have to say, I'm a bit let down. I've always wanted a Firebird because of its bite,, and I'm also a big fan of guitars w one pickup. In this video at around 2:43,, Joe explains how when you roll off the volume,, the cleaner it gets,, quote "almost country like". Just on the strength of that sold me on this guitar. I plugged in mine about an hour ago for the first time,, it's exactly the opposite,, it's muddy from 0 to about 8 1/2. When it gets to around 10 is when the pickup finally comes alive. That's the only issue I have with the guitar (that's a big issue w me). Other than that,, it plays beautifully . Any suggestions as to what I should do to correct this issue or should I just return it? Thanks!

sllvnbil the capacitor is connected to lug 1 on the vol pot (modern wiring) but 50s wiring connects the cap to lug 2 then to the tone pot. I took the plunge and rewired this with 50s style and it makes a noticeable difference whilst keeping the tone cleaner as you back off the volume. I used an orange drop 0.22uf cap which is not necessary but for a few quid I gave it a go. There are lots of diagrams on google.

Damn...that is a lot of headstock. But those look and sound so nice. Say what you will about Epiphone, they do make some very nice stuff. Most of their mid priced and upper priced guitars are right on par with the PRS SE gear made in Korea. They are equal to the ESP LTD range and most definitely the Fender Mexican line. They are right there.

I love Firebirds but they take some getting used to. The neck seems incredibly long and your hand and arm seems to be shunted leftwards . They can neck dive too. On the plus side, you can play these sitting down, unlike quite a few of the more unorthodox guitar designs! This looks nice but its not cheap....for not a lot more you could probably pick up a secondhand Gibson.

But when I played a Les Paul studio, it felt a lot better than the Epiphone Custom that I'd played. Idk man, I'd have to try it out myself.

What Joe is playing here is a pre-production model. The models that will be offered in stores might not be built with the same woods. This one looks like genuine mahogany but the real production models might be built with the cheeper spongy chinese woods as used by Epiphone over the years. To me, the only Epiphones that were built with the real woods and sounded right to my ears were the Elitist series built in Japan.

According to Richie Fliegler, in his 1994 book titled: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO GUITAR AND AMP MAINTENANCE (HAL LEONARD), Page 29, ‘Neck-through’ guitars use one piece of wood from headstock to end pin, with ‘body wings’ attached. These guitars are very stiff and can sustain a note, but have very little personality.’

      @colinmcnab6145 Před 7 lety

Platinum Black this is a nine ply neck thru the same a Gibson and they have done an excellent job its just on mine there were some finish flaws so its gone back for replacement. But overall if you are after a Firebird 1 this is it, Tokai did one but it was not accurate with its set neck and jack socket placement.

if you get a righty and string it upside down, you might be able to get away with calling it a non-reverse lefty firebird.

LOL!! May wind up having to do that, but the costs go up, then. For I would take it to my local luthier to have it done right. May as well buy a Gibson after all that.

Colour is polymist gold. There are plenty of other guitars done in a tobacco sunburst style, but I believe(?) polymist gold is a unique colour just for this signature Joe guitar, i.e. not on any other Epiphone / Gibson / etc (unless you get someone to replicate it).

they've done various firebird and thunderbird versions. a few years back they had the Firebird Studio faded finish in cherry, full size humbuckers and just a set neck. to my knowledge this is the first firebird that has the original 61' specs or close enough. its the first neck thru body firebird that epi has done.

The main part is the royalty Bonamassa's getting out of another sig model. I had an original 1966 Firebird V, and it wasn't bad , but not great like the 64 SG Standard I got after spending five years fighting with the Firebird.

I don't know about Canada, but with the Gibson model finally being within reach at $1,100 street price, I'll take a pass on the Epi. IMO, lots of the Firebird magic comes from the neck p'up and this Epi doesn't have it.

  • @AndalusiaArmory

How about building a firebird that is ACTUALLY affordable? I can't wait for the "new" guitar market bubble to burst! Its very nice that you all are building these vintage styled repro and sig models but I hope you understand that the BLUES market that this is obviously geared toward is mostly comprised of down on their luck musicians and indie touring musicians. With that said, these people need to eat and they have families.... is it to much to ask to build a decent firebird body style that could be sub $300.00? Gibson USA can make a sub $500 made here in America, seems to be that Epiphone could have the Chinese build something cheaper. What's the issue? Don't actually care that musicians are some of the hardest hit by craptacular economy?

Joe N they cost £619GBP in the UK and now all sold out. I sold a 2001 Gibson Firebird 5 after I bought the Epiphone which is a much better guitar than the Gibson standard production models and the Epiphone is the correct shape unlike the Gibsons. The only issue I have is it would have been better with a clear nitro finish and not poly.
