Strickland has talent and personality,
nerves of steel, plus the eye of the tiger.
I like this guy,at his best or worst,he is an entertainer.
Grady's alacritous jocularity is missed by fans of our game. RIP Professor.
Lol...I think Grady is sponsored by Roget's Thesaurus and Merriam-Webster. He was a great asset to pool as a sport, and was an ambassador with class. After listening to the most recent mosconi cup players, it's no wonder pool lost the respect it deserves. Grady is sorely missed.
Yes he is, I miss him dearly, especially his quick whit and comments
Yes dude. He would have loved that shit..also anything about "cavernous receptacles" or bashing ex wives live on the air lol what a champion
@@philipcahill4190 Lol we love ya Grady
Archer averages two balls per break and 5 pieces of lint
What does 5 pieces of lint mean?
You know Earl is dying inside when Johnny keeps picking shit off the felt.😂
watching johnny is like watching paint dry
30 years later, he's still picking shit off tables lol
Grady & Billy going at each other has to be the greatest interaction there ever was, very entertaining
Definitely better than having to listen to Mark Wilson
Two of the greatest 9-Ball players Archer & Strickland. But when it comes to 9-Ball and strictly 9-Ball Earl Strickland is the best ever. Comes back from a 12-8 deficit to win the match against a talent like Archer!
The HD remaster on this is amazing! And the match is good too. Thank you, Mr. Fleming!
Glad you like it!
Legendary match and great commentary by Grady and Billy with some classic humor added 😃
can we talk about how sick johnny's shirt is?
It's a map of the world.
@A killa 4 reala So, what do you kill? Stray cats?
@Shits-and-Giggles669was her name Bertha?
Billy knows his shit🤣
Earl had an amazing game.
earl was playing at such a pace he wasn’t even chalking between shots sometimes
he never chalks everytime
10:50
Look how much Archer bends his finger on his bridge hand.
It's like there's no bones there
I don’t get it, i kept rubbing my fingers watching lol
Grady, take your Gerotol! That was a rail-first kick.
Watching this video for me is quite an emotional experience, because I recently got to watch Earl play Johnny live for a Tommy Kennedy benefit event. And their attitudes towards each other are very similar 28 years ago! It’s amazing how pool players seem to change very little even as they age on the outside. Apparently, Earl still runs 7 hours a day and does 600 sit-ups. What a god. And btw, they played BETTER now than they did back then. Two masters of the table, playing each other with a lifetime of experience, it was a joy to see them make it look so easy.
i love earl but he dont run 7 hours a day or does 600 set ups he would be in nursing home if he did
Sure miss Grady his witty sharp articulate commentary was great....
"Gaping apertures"
Classic Grady
"I don't know what everyone was laughing at. It sounded like almost a groan, an anguished cry for help."
That last game was nail bitting good.i wish pool still had this kinda chemistry..
I was really rooting for Archer, but Earl played super-strong down the stretch. Coming from behind against a player like Archer ain,t easy, but Earl by-God got it done!
i never could under stand why they were never more videos of buddy hall
Hi. Because Buddy was in his prime in the 70's and early 80's. He was well into his forties around this time.
Earl is the best! So fun to watch him play and he is still playing amazing even as an old man.
Blue Masters chalk rules !!! SVB still using with "The Pearl !!"
You know what really rules? Having such great stroke you need no chalk at all. I ran a couple racks this morning doing this. I've put tape before as a drill to make sure i'm hitting straight, but didn't realize I could run racks without chalk. Now THAT'S strong (& good accuracy and stroke)
@@godjhaka That's great stuff...well done, player !
Of course, you know it's a temporary fix. You will need
that chalk for the friction and cueball control soon !
KEEP POCKETING !!
*TABLES WERE SO MUCH SLOWER. AND COMMENTATORS COMMENT ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE BUCKETS FOR POCKETS. AWESOME UPLOAD TO SEE A YOUNG EARL AND JOHNNY.*
● Pat. Thanks for posting this.
You're welcome.
What an awesome come back Earl!!👍
Oh yeah!
Man, this match is like seeing Ali-Tyson if it could’ve ever happened. Two of my favorite players ever. But I’m right at the beginning and I have no idea who wins.
Definitely ball first. The old man is right
100%…. The other guy was a bit naive.
Tom Kennedy was no joke. I watched him practicing kick shots at the start of this tournament. He ran a whole rack just kicking all the balls in.
Did anyone else find Waldo in the crowd? 😂
No that was Keyser Soze
What a hell of a match, way to go Earl!
rail first
Looked that way to me as well.
Oh yeah I remember Johnny Archer well cus I played him in Memphis at the Rack off Lamar Ave when he was there in a tournament and I lost when I missed and he ran 80 balls in a race to 10 ...
..BEST experience I ever had In my younger years ! Hell in 2024 I'll try again in a world champion tournament if I can get my legs back in shape ! And of course I'll play and practice a year at least ! I got as much of a chance as any other player out there and I love a challenge! Gratitude ☝️
I saw Archer give Roger Griffith, pro player from Phoenix the 6 ball, in Olathe KS, when Griffith was winning pro tournaments, he ran out of money and tried to put up his stick to play more and just take the 7, Archer just shook his head no, and walk off, unbelievable break and run player Archer was in the 90s!
Awesome match fellas👏
Glad you enjoyed it
This was a great game!!
*LOVE THE OLDER POOL TABLES WITH A PROPER BALL RETURN*
Yes...yes...yes !!!!
I wish guys in today's age could play as fast as Earl during this match. But to be fair the pockets are much smaller nowadays and the cloth is super fast.
this old brunswick tables were so forgiven u could hit last diamond on rail ball sti;; go
Awesome match.
Yes it was
Skinny Johnny looks like Fedor.
When Earl finished out the rack 23 to the 12 to 12 I thought Billy had a tearful catch in his voice lol.
Johnny looks like Arnie Cunningham from Christine
It's funny that Billy thinks he went RAIL first. It's utterly IMPOSSIBLE to go rail first and have the cue ball behave as if it went rail first.
The physics of how it reacts off the ball is the billiard line plus or minus draw or follow. ONLY off the rails can you alter it like that. Rail first means the CB can only go down the billiard line. Granted, it looks SUPER SUPER close. I've watched it in frame by frame (pause the video, then use the < or > key (actually coma or period, the shift key isn't required) and you can move it one frame at a time. But remember ... the last inch or so is almost invisible, so you're still left assessing it based off your knowledge of the physics. Otherwise ... set a ball up at a pool hall. You can make a rail "kinda first" hit of the OB is frozen to the rail ... but that's bc the CB compresses the rail slightly ... but it ultimately is simultaneous in behavior ... but picks up a lot of spin off the first rail ... but doesn't accelerate off the rails until the 2nd rail. But if the ball is off the rail a little, the only way to leave the rail at an angle other than the billiard line is to go ball first. Otherwise, there'll always be the delay as the draw or follow bends the billiard line, but ultimately starts off on it. (man is there a lot of nuance to how the balls behave near the rail ... I have so much more I could say about this subject. unreal).
Not if you spin it into the object ball rail first.
Earl zooms around the table, he is so cool! Ron Cerelli The Legend
can't believe this is a world 9-ball tournament and they have to rack their own balls-low class!-Ron Cerelli The Legend
for a second i thought it was some other Ron Cerelli. Now I know it's Ron Cerelli, The Legend.
@@joemac999 this made me lol. Shorty Dancer, the legend.
I got a laugh from seeing Tommy Kennedy with the chalk hanging off his side.
@A killa 4 reala because the chalk hanging from his hip reminds me of the players that only play league pool
I'll never get over grady getting upset when I player proves him wrong mid sentence 🤣
I’d argue it’s the other way around
Who proved him wrong? Exactly, no-one. Billy just saying what HE THINKS is a fact
Slow the video down to 0.25 speed and the cue ball can be clearly seen hitting the rail first. That can be seen, there's no point in discussing it anymore than suggesting that the five didn't go into the pocket.
Watch again because you are wrong. Boll first.
@@glussa No, I am not wrong. What's a "boll" [sic]?
@@nickturner2813 the object ball was hit before the rail.
hit rail first
The Amazing Jonathan just strolls through at 42:25 LOL
Rip
Ball first. Think about what he's saying about the tangent line, the ball is impeding the cue from going into the 7.
Click "like" if you flinched at 56:31.
This is from '92?
Earl already has beginnings of bulging belly !!!
What happened to jogging and doing crunches?
More like crunch gem donuts...I love them !!
Clearly rail first.

Oh haha! These guys! Yagotta love it! Entertainment front and back! 👍🇺🇸
It was a simultaneous! lol
I see Johnny doing his house cleaning service. Surprised he hasnt a brush and pan in his back pocket, lol.
Let the rack their own.
Johnny's break back then was unrivaled only to Earl's... if these two guys still broke like this today, they would be in the running for all the major tournaments played through out the calendar year.
Neither of them can compete with today's players, Earl and Johnny in they're prime couldn't compete with today's players, drawing stone dead, Earl is still trying at least, it's a totally different game nowadays, just the way it is, sucks because both of these guys are my all time favorite players, along with Buddy Hall, Varner, Alex, and of course, Efren
@@billysikes1374 lol you realize that equipment back then was harder to play on and cues today make today's game easier, too. This idea that they couldn't handle today's pressure in their prime is laughable, considering how easy things are today. Every sport I watch, there is always somebody saying that players then, couldn't hack it today, which is completely false.
5 inch pockets lol buckets
@@billysikes1374 you do realize, based on what you put in the shim, can make the difference between a ball jarring or not.... the 2002 world title Earl won, was not on 5 inch buckets. Lmao
@@bradleyburton2664 your right, Bustamante shit all over himself, broke and scratched 3 times, midded a 6 ball 18 inches from the pocket, Yeah, he played good, and Bustamante lost his daughter hours before the match started, I KNOW MY POOL, have been playing for 35 years too
Grady was definitely wrong about the rail first shot. I met Incardona about 15 years ago and told him I thought Grady was wrong about that shot. Billy remembered exactly what I was talking about. He laughed and said, "Yeah, I know."
Have u ever played pool? Another guy who has 0 clue of pool or physics
@@MrArsk4 I have a 750 Fargo rating. I would love to give you some lessons some time.
@@dshadow3173 then u should definitely know that the cueball cant go there with rail first hit
@@MrArsk4 You can bet whatever you want. I say I can replicate the shot by going rail first.
@@dshadow3173 Tell me how does the cueball reacts in ur fantasy world?. In reality the cue ball goes along the tangent line after hitting the object ball. The side spin doesnt affect that path. The side spin only takes after the cue ball hits a rail. So in this shot, if the ball hit the rail first, it would hit then the object ball and go along the tangent no matter how much u have side spin
He used English an hit rail first!
Yes, of course he did.
Hitting ball 1st, per Grandpa Grady, would
have sent the ball into the rail, not the pocket.
I don’t know if Johnny Archer is still playing. But during his prime he was one of the most precise players I’ve ever seen. He was that guy in school who aced every Math test, probably.
He hit both simultaneously
I think the same both at once
These announcers are funny 😂
I wish Grady would let people do their shots instead of the way he would.
At that thin of a slice the angle, speed and english influence the ball more than ball or rail first.
Johnny built like a vape stick
Earl is the McEnroe of nine ball lol
Grady " the pockets are gaping apertures"
Lol yes he hated big pockets
Johnny the turtle Archer vs Earl the rabbit, Earl runs a rack in 40 seconds
Yeah Johnny plays slow today but he played fast in the 90s. Earl plays fast today like he always did.
Super awesome match
I like Johnny’s shirt
Rail first
Earls great player but damn homie cries too much lol
One reason I can’t stand him, always bitching about something or crying about the crowd.
Much respect for Earl, putting up with Archers BS
It was the other way around. Earl "The Earl" has always been an a-hole
Great match despite Archer rigging the rack
Rack 6?
Odd how you can see Archer "rigging the rack" when the entire racking process, in every game, is completely obscured from the camera. The only thing that can be seen is Archer's back!
@Nick Turner Archer worked with a few racking specialists. One of them wrote a tell all book on how to do it. Buddy Hall also witnessed Archer with another pro player [Shannon Daulton(?)] practicing "racking the balls". They would point where a specific ball//ball/s would hit on the rail/s after breaking their doctored racks. Sure enough the ball/s went exactly where they pointed! Buddy said something like pool was going to really tough to deal with, with this new generation of racking mechanics. Not saying Johnny did it all the time, but he and many others definitely became expert at it. That is probably one of the main reasons the rules changed to rack your own. Cheers!
Yeah...Earl should learn how to rack from Johnny...making 4 or 5 balls on the break lol...unreal
"these pockets are gapping apertures" I miss Grady
Rail first; no doubt. Frame by frame, the 5 ball doesn't move til the Q ball comes back off the rail. 4:30
No doubt, rail first.

Rail first. No question.

Grady is right. Ball first, otherwise you wouldnt see that "take" of the spin, that we see. (try play it yourself !)
Rail first no doubt
There's more fire in the commentary box than on the table. Things are definitely getting to spicy for the pepper in there 🌶
Also...ball first.
Does anybody know what size po kets these are? Or what soze pockets were standard in the pros in the 80s or 90s?
I think they were typically 4.75" (corner pockets)
What year would yall say the table speed picked up? I'd say we're close to it happening in the year this was filmed.
My top 2 favorite of all time are Efren Reyes & Steve Mizerak
I agree with FAVES being Efren and Miz, but you can guarantee the match wont take as long with these guys.😅
Seriously… take 30 seconds, slow the speed down to 1/4, it was ball first on that 5 ball in the first rack.
Damn Grady never shuts up.

Ball first, if you don't believe it, slow it down to .25 speed and it is more than obvious
Go into the settings and watch it in slow motion and freeze frame it right at impact...he hit the ball first
These guys never caused the shot clock
This is before archer started taking 2 minutes a shot like he started to do a few years later.
After watching the shot closely, Grady is correct!!! Johnny hit the 5 thinly!!!
You don't need to even watch it closely. Grady is correct because you know he hit the 5-ball first due to the direction of the cueball afterwards. You cannot hit rail first on that shot and then have the cueball go into the 7ball in the manner it did. If you hit the rail first on that shot the cueball would have taken a straight path upward to the direction of the upper left corner. That how you know if a guy hits the ball first or the rail first. Just look at the direciton of the cueball.
@@xanh350 You appear to have no idea. Please try it for yourself. The cue ball still has right spin on it after it has knocked in the object ball and so goes to the right. In fact I believe that the cue ball has MORE right spin on it after contact with the object ball. Think about it. As it contacts the object ball the object ball itself will 'grab' the edge of the cue ball, adding to the right spin. I know from bitter experience - I played this shot too hard (twice, I couldn't believe it the first time!) and the cueball went all the way up and scratched in the top corner pocket. As I say, please try it for yourself.
@@cueball5858 no need to try it as I’ve shot the shot already a thousand times.. if the same setup as the video and you scratched then you hit rail first.
If you played it with inside and it went to the closest rail then you shoot ball first.. there’s no debate here so iam not even sure what in my previous msg you disagree with.
@@xanh350The part of your previous message I disagree with is your statement "You cannot hit rail first on that shot and then have the cueball go into the 7 ball in the manner it did." Yes you can. In fact it happens every single time. If the object ball was hit first it would NOT go towards the seven. I know you say you've done this a thousand times but please set up the shot and try it again, first with inside and hitting the rail first and then with the same inside and hitting the ball first. Only the first shot will lead the CB to the 7. It's also very easy to see this if the video is played at a quarter speed.
Bill he hit rail first
Does anyone know which match it was where a bucket of water falls through the ceiling in the bleachers? I'm certain it was an SRO, and I'm almost certain Earl was playing.
