Fact: That giant bruise from the slide was 100% real so they put it in the movie
That looked so painful! I believe all the bruises and scraps were real, the girls worked hard for this movie.
I got one almost as big from an ATV crash in the Honduras lol. Very painful when it darkens to those colors hours later!!
Fun fact, that bruise in softball, is called a raspberry ! 😅 at least where I am from growing up, not sure if there are other names for it. They are not fun that's for sure ! Haha
That's why I never slid when I played softball. If I would have been wearing baseball pants instead of shorts, I would have tried. One of the players on my team slid and had a huge gash along the length of her thigh. I saw that and thought, "Nope, not sliding unless I'm wearing pant."
Damn... she went full send in that scene. I always thought "the make up artist did really effing good!" Lol nope. She just effed her thigh up!!!
The part with the adult Stillwell kills me! You get the sense throughout the movie that his mother, Evelyn, was probably abused and this was their temporary respite from a miserable home life. Stillwell-angel was a rotten kid, but grew into a decent man who honored her legacy.
Agree. His father was probably absent emotionally and his mother had to do everything and he appreciated her very much. You see how bereft he is without her.

Tom Hanks and Geena Davis were iconic in this film. Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell were so funny as best friends.

I went to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown when I was a kid, it was one of the coolest things I'll ever remember... the history of Baseball ⚾️ !!

The craziest part is that leg injury that you saw on that girl when she slid, that really happened to the actress when she slid in that scene. That wasn't makeup that was a real injury
Jon Lovitz (the scout) yelling at the cow wasn’t actually in the script. He broke character because the cows had been constantly mooing as they were filing those scenes (as they do lol) and just got pissed off and yelled at them. Penny Marshal and everyone else involved thought it was hilarious and not really ‘out of character’, so it made it in the movie.
Speaking of sport, Geena Davis actually has some real talent. She is an accomplished archer and only narrowly missed making it onto the U.S. archery team for the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics.
My friend's mother was a Racine Belle and she loved this movie. She said that, overall, it did a great job of capturing the spirit of the league. Yes, it did some "hollywooding" but it was a great tribute.
My aunt was a fort wayne daisy. She would have loved this but passed away before it . I learned about the a.a.g.b.l way before this movie

My neighbor's mom was a Minneapolis Millerette. She used to get him and his brothers prepared for Little League baseball. He said they used to watch this movie when the three brothers had reunions.
Once you know that the players at the end are the actual members of the AAGPBL, it becomes much more emotional.
Older Dottie(Geena Davis) is played by Lynn Cartwright. the fact that they looked nearly identical always amazed me.
It wasn't until I was an adult that I found out they were two different women, lol. I just always thought they did a very good make-up job on her, they only used Geena's voice and she did really good lip syncing, it really feels like she's actually talking. Other then her height the old Kit looks quite like her as well.
I was today year's old when I discovered this.
Even Steven Spielberg asked Penny Marshall if that was Geena Davis.
Too bad that weren't in another movie. They could have played mother and daughter.

I've seen this movie so many times. When Tom Hanks says "I'm sorry Betty" and then she says "No George" always gets me. R.I.P and thank you all veterans who have paid the unfortunate price...🇺🇸

Either you get sarcasm and love and breathe it or you don't. Personally I was raised with biting sarcasm so 1/2 the time my brother say stuff to me I'm like what's that smell...is it SARCASM or are you for real, cuz I honestly can't tell at times. 😂

The soldier dancing with Madonna was Eddie Mekka - RIP he died this past November, he was also a singer and played Carmine on Laverne and Shirley. Penny Marshall often used people she worked with in the past in big and small roles. Gary Marshall of. course as Mr Harvey but also the game announcer is David Landers who was also on L&S as Squiggy (David passed away in 2020j and Penny’s daughter Tracy played Betty.

My grandma is almost 96. When I talked to her a couple weeks ago and she said her best years (overall) were when she was 40-70. Her health was good, she was financially stable, she had opportunities to travel, and she was more confident in herself.
Fun fact: The woman near the end of the movie who calls Dottie the best player in the league actually was a pitcher for the Peaches.
I have an irrational love for this movie. I don’t know what it is but something about this kicks me right in the nostalgia feels even though I don’t care about baseball and am definitely not old enough to remember this era.
Because it’s just a well done movie. I was only 7 when this movie came out. I knew nothing about this era or baseball, but it was my fave movie as a child. Authentic movies have that effect.

It's an underdog film with the warm nostalgia of baseball, classic songs and vehicles, great acting, interesting characters, and witty dialogue. A well written script. It's a good all-rounder. This is the type of movie which portrays strong, female characters which everyone can back and root for.
My dad, who passed this last year, told me was ten when he was a snack vendor (box with strap around the neck) to some of their practices. Said they'd tease and flirt with him till he blushed). Different times wow.
The way you both said "MADONNA?!" was some serious twin shit.

Well, I doubt they even knew who she (Madonna)was in this movie, they literally cut all her scenes out and she was great in this movie. They literally didn’t even mention her at all, discussing the movie. What a waste of a reaction to this movie.

Woo-hoo! One of my fave movies ever! Amazing casting, especially for the older versions of themselves.
Fun fact: Tracy Reiner (“Betty Spaghetti”) is the daughter of Rob Reiner and Penny Marshall (who directed the film).
Her dad is actually Penny's first husband, Michael Henry. But she had a very good relationship with her step dad Rob, and took his name as her stage name.

The Jon Lovitz character doesn't have an unfunny line in the whole flick.

You don't have to overreact to everything. I could already tell by the way they reacted to Lovitz's classic portrayal of how scouts were in 1940s that this reaction would blow.

This movie came up this morning on a local radio show. They were questioning if this was a sports movie... I was screaming at my radio... Mission accomplished.
Unquestionably a sports movie...and several tiers above Moneyball.

@@howardbalaban7051 it counts a "historical sports movie" due to the fact that wants to WW2 era ended that was the end of the series for these women's Leagues. After that they're expected to get right back into the kitchen. The Women's Leagues were only made as an alternative form of entertainment UNTIL the men can come back from war and play in more numbers in the regular Leagues. They were basically set up as a distraction for people from what was going on at the time. After the war, THAT'S when the Baby Boomers came along because everybody came back from the war started getting pregnant. They were all catching up on what they missed while they were away. THAT'S when my brother showed up, and 2 years apart and there was another daughter before them but she had passed early on at 6 days old from SIDS. My father was a WW2 Army Air CORPS MP, that's what the Air Force was before it became its own branch. He was an expert marksman and was given several sharpshooter awards. His younger brother was WW2 ARMY MP. My Uncle Willie was a sniper during the war. When they were alive they'd seen this movie and it was one of their favorites ALSO! ♥️
@@christinegelabert1651 Thanks to all your family members for their service! I'm a Navy brat myself, and my grandfather was a WWII Marine. My brother currently serves in the USAF. As for the movie, I made the actual league the subject of a final research paper in a class I took in undergrad. The women in the AAGPBL were amazing!
In that era, what they were doing was outlandish. Women didn't play baseball. They cleaned house and had babies while men did all the sports and went to work. They were being criticized for starting an all women's league to start with, so they tried to offset that with the whole beauty and charm school thing so none of their players would look "unwomanly." It's stupid and archaic now, but that is how it was then. This is based on a true story. Those elderly women you saw at the end playing ball were actually in the league. These ladies played their hearts out and it took decades for any of them to be added to the baseball hall of fame.

Point to the part where they were "forced." They didn't like the uniforms and the director told them they were free to leave if they felt they couldn't wear it. No one left. But, okay, continue taking agency away from women as though they can't make their own decisions and are little porcelain figurines that'll break if they have to learn how to sit like a lady and use proper eating etiquette. @@LA_HA With men and boys going into the service woman had to go to work to support their families and for the establishment in baseball to force them into charm schools is just wrong. Yes there were other jobs but i highly doubt they paid as much as playing baseball did.
@@rexjdk This is something we call Life Choices. They made the choice to stay and get paid to play baseball and to represent the team. That means having a ladylike presence and acting a certain way in public.
The men had to do it, too, just more focused on how they needed to present themselves as men. They got paid to improve in ways they wouldn't have otherwise because many of them weren't in a position to know those things. This still happens.
I'm not trying to argue the point into the ground. I'm just asking that people think about the amazing opportunities these women were given, and to consider that they weren't Forced to get more good out of the experience than is being credited for. It was an amazing time for them. Why ruin it with imagined slights of being forced to do it?
Like Marla. She was a completely different person from who she was before they went to charm school and ended up getting married to a man who loved her. It improved her life. What's wrong with that?
Love the ending. Did she let her sister win because her sister needed the win more than she did? Probably. But that's love. If Dottie wins, great but she destroys her sister and loses her forever. The baseball game is a microcosm of Kits whole life. If she loses, its life beating her down again, and how the person you love and admire can be a mirror to your own failings in comparison. You feel for both sisters.
That is a question that has been asked, but I honestly don’t think so. I think they got to a point in their relationship where Dottie accepted to let Kit take the path she needed to take. I think this was emphasized by her telling Ellen Sue to pitch her high, fast ones. It would make no sense to tell her that and then let her win. But I think she was genuinely proud she could have her moment because she knew it was an authentic moment so it was a proud look of “finally,” not “look what I was able to give her.” I also think Dottie was too honorable to let her whole team down just to let her sister win. My take on it.
@@winter_s_44 I actually think the trade to racine was good for kit and she got training that dottie didn't see and got it all on her own
I believe Dottie did change her mind. First she tells Ellen Sue to throw high fastballs to end this since Kit could not layoff em. But than with grit & determination finally got a piece of it and when Dottie saw her coming home I think in her mind she decided to let it go and let Kit have her moment. Kit got a walkoff to help her team be the first world champions and a curtain call in the end with her name chanted.
I believe there is no definitive answer to the ending whether Dottie let Kit win, even the cast has differing opinions. I personally believe she dropped the ball intentionally as a way of making peace with her sister.

Just like she said, the game meant a lot to her, but not at the expense of her relationships. She left to have kids with her husband. She went on this journey for Kitt in the first place. She wasn't willing to lose Kitt over winning a game she didn't love more than her sister. And she knew it was Everything to Kitt, who was staying to play. Dottie was leaving
Remember watching this back in 92. It was bittersweet to say the least. Also you guys should check out Death Becomes Her, released the same year.
I was a girl playing baseball when this movie came out. I watched it so many times I still know almost every line by heart. One of my all-time favorite movies.
Fun fact, the bruse on Alice wasn’t make up. It was an actual bruse the actress got while sliding and they kept it in for the movie to tribute how hard the ball players worked. And the importance of proper uniforms I guess 😊
This is just what were expected of women back then and I loved that this movie showed all parts, the pretty and ugly side of being in women's baseball
True. And men in baseball are taught how to behave as well because they are embassadors for the sport and often find themselves meeting a lot of people in formal situations and talking to the press. They have to be taught that stuff.
And why not learn how to sit, eat, dress, speak well, behave like a lady, etc? It worked wonders for many of them, who had better lives because of that entire experience than they would've had otherwise.
It's not misogynist or a negative thing for a woman to learn how to be more feminine and a better person overall

9:05 - That's actor Jon Lovitz. He's a Saturday Night Live alumni and comedian who is known for his brash demeanor and sarcasm in his movies & comedic roles. Which means he was the perfect choice to cast as he basically plays himself in this movie.
My Grandfather who was a Korean war vet who lived through Jim Crow and died at 97 often told all of his 16 Grandkids that "Only the body grows old, your mind stays the same". (Unless of course you get some type of disease that alters the brain.) I find that to be very true. I love this movie and watched it as a kid. If Tom Hanks or Geena Davis is in it, I'm definitely watching. But you guys were so mean to my main man John Lovitz though who is a SNL Alumni and comedic genius. I forgive you. Lol 🤎🙏🏽

Being a Rockford native myself, the Rockford Peaches are still very popular even today. I actually met the real Dotty when I was a kid. Pretty cool. The city still has the original gate entrance to what is now a school. This movie will never get old. Such a classic!!!

@@LA_HA do they ask men to take them? No. Does it have anything to do with playing the game? No. Charm has no practical benefit for the accomplishment of the job of baseball player. The only reason they were required for women and women alone (which right there, hint hint sexism) are sexualized female beauty standards reinforced by misogyny. That's why.

A lot of athletes come from poverty and have to deal with the press, meeting people all over the world, and knowing how to do things as representatives of their teams, Country, and sport that they didn't grow up knowing.
So, it would've been odd if they didn't do the same for the women.
The fact is, when you represent more than just yourself, you need to learn how to behave, speak, and address certain people in certain situations. It's called Presenting Yourself, aka learning how to behave in public. It would be embarrassing for the individuals to make social faux pas, as well as those they represent. So, yeah, male athletes are taught social manners and how to talk to the press, fans, etc.
Weren't you taught how to behave in certain situations -- in formal settings, job interviews, meeting important people, on dates, etc? Or do you just act like whatever in every situation you're in?

You've discovered the Tom Hanks acting trope. Tom Cruise runs. Brad Pitt eats. Tom Hanks pees or references peeing. A League of Their Own, The Terminal, Forrest Gump, Castaway, Apollo 13, The Green Mile, Captain Phillips, Saving Private Ryan, and on and on.
And you never want to be in a vehicle with him.
Yeah the league and the 4 teams were definitely real. Racine Bells did indeed win the World Series but it wasn’t against the Rockford Peaches and it only went 5 games (4-1 in their favor obviously). Everyone else were fictional versions of real players like Dottie. This movie is one of those “inspired by a true story” type where you everything happened for real but a lot was changed.
Excellent movie choice. The telegram scene in the locker room is so emotional, it gets me everytime.

The moment when Jimmy (Tom Hanks) throws his glove at the little kid and nails him in the face is totally ad-libbed by Hanks. You can hear and see Rosie cracking up! LOL
She lost the game on purpose. She gave it all up for her sister. It wasn’t a lack of love for the game or wanting to start a family. She loved Kit more than anything at that time in her life. She gave up everything for her little sister. Or at least, that has been my take on it every time I’ve watched. But I really loved your view. It opened up an entirely new avenue and we decided to watch it again lol. Love y’all’s videos!

You said it right, you can't relive those years. I don't live that far from where I grew up. It's different now, there are new houses build where my building used to be. Some people I grew up with still live there, a lot have moved away or have passed on. But the Elementary school that I went to with the big schoolyard is still there, that's where we played everything. We played baseball, handball, and tackle football when it snowed. We even build ramps so we can jump our bikes there like Evil Knievel. Every time I hear Madonna's song, "This used to be my Playground", it brings a tear to my eyes. Great memories.
Having seen the deleted kiss between Jimmy and Dottie, her dramatic reaction of leaving makes perfect sense but I'm glad they didn't include that scene.

Yes, it's an interesting scene and it makes so much more sense but I'm so glad it was cut. It would have made Jimmy look awful and your suppose to see his progression by this point and the story is about Dotty and her relationships between the girls and Kit and that's where the focus needed to stay, to me that scene would have ruined it.
Time picks up speed the older you get. I am already 41 and I can already feel 50 coming up and I am no better financially or socially than I was at 24 and still have nothing of my own. This is one of my favourite movies of all time. My favourite lines are "Baseball is what gets inside you. It's what lights you up, you can't deny that" and "it's supposed to be hard, if it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great" because it's true. I played softball for 10 years and i love every second of it, there was a period of time where i was playing for 3 different divisions at the same time so i was playing 3 games back to back every game day and i was also playing during school in the school league. I wish i never gave it up but I did initially to concentrate on school but i didn't return because of the long term damage i'd done to my rotator cuff which i didn't realise at the time of quitting. This movie is so special and they really captured what this sport feels like for people.
I had the honor of meeting a bunch of real Rockford Peaches a few years ago (and photos with and autographs too) when they rebuilt their field in Rockford. Those are some tough old ladies!
Octo I know how you feel. I'm reaching the big 3 decade this year and I have experience some great moments in my life. I've took ballroom dancing. I've been to a few states over the years and met some interesting people. Not to mention I've convinced a few friends to follow their dreams and stay on the path of being good. I consider them great memories that I'll hold onto.

How does one edit out every Madonna scene from his movie? The top five stars in this movie were: Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnel & Lori Petty. Do you even know who Madonna was in the movie??
Madonna was probably the weakest performance of any secondary character in the movie. Rosie O’Donnell did a much better job and I liked a lot of the rest of the team better. Madonna was just OK. The big dance scene actually seemed added just to give her something to do.

This is some of the absolute best old vs young version of the same character casting I have ever seen! This is one of my favorite movies to exist. I went to a university that was an all women's school until the 50s, one of my favorite alums played in the real version of this league. She loved talking about her time at our college then leaving spring semester early to go to spring training to play baseball with women from all over the country. She died last year and I had a good cry while watching this movie for her.

Mind blown! The scene where Dottie's grandkids are basketball could be foreshadowing to her and Kit's last game.
I've watched several reactions to this movie, and when they first show Tom Hanks each and every one of them say, "There he is." 😂
4. If Kit hadn't pushed her to actually take advantage of that golden opportunity dangling in front of her, Dottie would never have had this experience of a lifetime! How grandly her ego was stroked as "The Queen of Diamonds", despite her false modesty. It gave her the chance to have SOMETHING in her life that was just hers! Something that had her rise to the occasion of being something other than someone's wife/daughter/mother! Yes, of course, Kit had just as much to gain from this. Without it, she'd just be stuck in that one-horse town as a tomboyish nobody; a pale imitation of her sister that no man would want and no league/organization (amateur or otherwise) would ever truly take seriously as a ballplayer!
The fact still remains that this experience changed Dottie for the better; she could now, at the very least, be a woman of substance to her forthcoming family. She got a chance to meet other women just like her as an athlete, but from all different walks of life to gain perspective on how she should raise her own daughter(s). She got to be a part of something not only special with her sister, but historical for women of both past and present; a fact that didn't truly sink in for her until she finally reunited with her former teammates at the Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, seeing all the pix, plaques and paraphernalia laid out for the exhibits. Make no mistake, for the PROFESSIONAL athlete she was and the woman she became at the end of this film, she has her sister to thank entirely for it!

I remember when this movie came out and me and my grandfather talked about the women's baseball league. He said they were phenomenal to watch. It took forever for them to be put into the baseball Hall of fame. This movie is great paying homage to their contribution to the American pastime. Hope you guys watched the ending with the original baseball players playing including the original Dottie

This is absolutely my favorite movie. Sadly, there's still plenty of that sexist gender crap in sports today, just look at the difference between men and women's beach volleyball uniforms. It's ridiculous.
Or women in gymnastics and men in gymnastics. Happily, women are starting to push back and demand clothing that isn't so sexual.
And is just more practical.
There was a big deal like last year during the Summer Olympics with one of the Women Beach Volleyball teams adjusting their uniforms to something more than a bikini and they got fined for breaking rules. I can't remember what country it was but seriously good on them for it.
Only became women cant drawn in the crowds like men so they need to use other ploys.

Dottie dropped the ball on purpose so her sister could finally win. That's why they showed her holding onto the ball when she was run over earlier in the movie, to show us that she could've held on if she wanted.

He was a regular on SNL for years and years before this movie so we were all accustomed to his weirdness and specific cadence.
It’s just funny to see someone stumble on him and give the appropriate “WTF” reaction.
The first time I saw this move I was not yet 18, learned English well enough to understand every word in a movie just a few movies before. It made a huge impression on me and still belongs to my top-10. Thanks for the intense rewatch 👌
