When you finish the movie, you think "this is the dumbest movie I've ever watched"... But then two days later you're still thinking about the movie.
The early to mid 2000s had a LOT of really stupid comedy movies but this is one of the few that still holds up.
Yes and then watch it another 100 times
except this isn’t dumb, it’s accurate and entertaining and so funny and timeless and stuff
@@ButteredToast32 because this isn’t stupid and it’s timeless and accurate and realistic and entertaining and so funny and more
I loved it from the get-go. So weird and different. I saw it opening day in theaters and went immediately after to Walmart and made my own Vote for Pedro shirt. But this was filmed about 20 minutes from where I live so I eas dying to see it. (SO many things are accurate. I know who are actors and who live there. I even went and saw Tina the Laaama. Lol)
Nope... 9 years later and this is still hands down the absolute most boring movie I've ever seen. And I'm a fan of Wes Anderson movies, and they're about as spicy as a stale cracker soaked in milk.
This movie had a budget of $400,000, and made over $46 MILLION at the box office worldwide. It's the greatest movie about nothing.
Correction. It is the greatest movie about RANDOMNESS. Even how the tune at the end was created "music for a found harmonium" by Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
People forget that it failed at the box office originally, the 'random' era of the 2000's saved it.
I also heard that Napleon was paid
$1,000
@@ironman6432 He was initially, given the budget, but after the movie did extremely well at the box office he made more. Well deserved.
Also, they spent 200,000 THOUSAND licensing the song for Napoleon’s dance, so the rest of the movie cost 200,000
The only high school movie to actually capture what high school looked and felt like. I remember feeling that dorky.
This and Superbad for sure
@@GangstaStan010 what weird highschool did you go to?
I guess it feels like the only highschool movie cause Napoleon dynamite was dorky as you.
@@lampad4549 I meant the awkwardness. Not literally everything.
Exactly! 😆😅 I remember it being very much close to this!
I adore this movie for many reasons - the biggest one being because it actually allows the weirdo/awkward/nerdy characters to be GENUINELY weirdo/awkward/nerdy, as opposed to most mainstream high school movies where the "weirdos" are just hot, clever, charismatic 20-somethings who clearly would be VERY popular in real-life.
This movie's genius is that it lets you see exactly why Napoleon and his comrades are all outcasts - and then finds ways to make you like them and root for them anyway.
Precisely this
It portrays the outcasts very realistically and is actually more relatable for that heheh
Its not just the genuine characters either, if you take all the vignette moments individually and look at them singly by themselves, they are the kind of things you'd see in real life, those weird little odd moments that are just 'strange', its just weird in the movie when strung together so closely together...
Alot of my friends at school in the 90's were Napoleons and Pedros as such Ive seen some weird stuff, been in some weird stuff, hell ive BEEN the weird stuff, yet at the time you dont even notice it as weird. Unlike me though, Napoleon doesnt care its weird... and for that he's a far better and confident person/friend than I would ever be/was.
Everyone's weird, life is just weird in general... this movie condenses it and celebrates it.
@@NZBigfoot Exactly, it's as if you're just filming real people in real life situations, it doesn't flow all preteraturally and exaggerated like, well, a Hollywood movie
And I agree, I wish we all were able to be weird and not care lol
Pfft people are way more weirder than that today and it's all subjective anyways not all are like that
Indeed this movie is a geek favorite me included. I'm still so very different from my age group peers but the past 10 years I have found a lot kindred souls, in so many different places. It's such a good feeling to be around people with whom your on the same wavelength ... like Napoleon with Pedro and Deb. Kip and LaFawnduh might even be the better example.
For some reason seeing everyone applaud and cheer for Napoleon's dance lifts my spirits every time I see it
For some reason? It's the classic underdog story, that's why. The guy spent his life living in the shadows and finally was seen.
Yes!!!
So true.
I swear when he bust out with the dance moves I was in ahh because it was way better than I was expecting.
You have to give him credit to have the guts to do that in front of the entire school who mostly hate him
Napoleon coming through for Pedro in the end like a true homie. We all need at least one friend like that. Respect.
That moment when the wife just dead ass stares at the husband when he can’t rip the bowl is the funniest thing ever to me.
I can't tell if she's disgusted he can't break it, or that he's a moron for even thinking he could.

As someone on the Autism spectrum who also grew up in the middle of nowhere, I really identify with aspects of this movie!
Exactly I love this movie cause it’s so true
Thank you for bringing that up. I was getting annoyed at their “what’s wrong with them?” Nothing! This movie is pure comedy and awesomeness! I let my 9YO on the spectrum watch this, and he was cracking up.
@J_L_V you act like that's not a legit question. Not everybody has autism or knows about it
@@kimson305 it comes off as pretty unempathetic to me.
I'm at the point in my life now where this movie is no longer a comedy at all to me but a lovely heartfelt glimpse into a small part life and being authentic to yourself and your friends. I cry way more than I laugh watching this movie now. I love it. The ending is pure gold and hits me in the feels everytime.
I agree. This slice of life films means so much more than it use to.
I thought I was the only one who thinks that this movie started out as a comedy but morphed into a romance. The way that Deb looks at Napoleon during their dance and at the end of the movie gives me hope that being the 'cool kid' back in the day wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Authenticity and affection win out in the end.
OK
@Phil Philips everybody taught that it's literally the plot
@@SubterrelProspector sure
I grew up in a really weird rural desert town full of kids like Napoleon and Kip. This movie felt like a perfect surreal reflection of my mid ‘90s teen hood.
This movie was such a sleeper hit at the time, that when it left the theater, there was such demand for it it came back with the added wedding sequence after the credits.
I had never seen the wedding after credit scene. I actually prefer the movie ending with Napoleon and Deb playing together as the camera pans out.
The “Vote for Pedro” shirts were everywhere! Had one!
Oh thats interesting cos I suspected it was shot later-I noticed some of the characters didnt look the same as before!!
"Don't be jealous that I've been talking to hot babes all day" this movie will always be quotable 😂
EDIT: forgot to add. There's a cartoon series based on the movie. I wish that they made another season.
"It's a Sledgehammer"....."DANG, you got shocks, pegs; LUCKY"...."Do you ever take it off any sweet jumps" 😆🤣
Uncle Rico (John Gries) also plays Lazlo Hollyfeld in an Awesome 80's Movie 🍿, Real Genius. Val Kilmer is also in the movie. A MUST WATCH
Get your own tots!
“Don’t be jealous that I’ve been chatting online with babes all day.”
But my lips hurt real bad! 😂
There's a ton of little character bits snuck into this movie that I'm still finding years later.
Napoleon is drinking store-brand flavor-aid in an old Gatorade bottle.
Kip is using a block of government cheese for his nachos.
Pedro and his family are transplants by the Mormon church to fill-out the population of the local community, which is why they so-suddenly show up.
Napoleon lives in Idaho which is why his tots are so sought-after.
Napoleon is actually training to be a farmer while his brother is leaving the town forever.
"La-Fawnduh" is probably the actual spelling of her name considering he met her in a chat room and that makes it all the funnier.
Napoleon notices a Sai in the thrift store and this film was set in the early 90's during the Ninja Turtle craze. Also, note Napoleon taking karate lessons like many kids did due to the turtles.
Loch Ness was a popular subject of movies from the early 90's as well.
Overall the film is an absolute treasure-trove of little details from the early 90's that we may not see in future movies.
Um what? Hah
Sought after by whom? Others in the same places?
He wasn’t training to be a farmer, ffa is a popular school activity in some places in the US, yes they’re trying to get more young people into farming but most do it for fun/to have something to do and socialise
And it’s not set in the early 90s, it’s early 00s, it’s present day at the time(:
idc what anyone says, Kip and Lafawnduh are otp forever. also, Napoleon is the coolest dweeb in existence and I love how throughout the movie, we're all laughing at him but by the end of the movie we're cheering and rooting for him. pure classic. ❤
This is one of the most quotable movies I’ve ever seen. I still wear my Vote for Pedro shirt.
One of my supervisors at one of my old jobs used to call on the intercom “your mom goes to college”
“Your mom goes to college!”
This movie is so AWESOME! John Heder is a great actor.
YES! Would love to see them react to Blades of Glory🤣🤣🤣
This is a classic! When bully kicked his tots, and you both screamingly said "NO!" At the same time perfectly. 👌 13:11 Love your reactions fellas!
This is a classic. From the awkward moments to the dancing 🤣
The writers talk about how this was the goofiness of middle school. And I totally see that. This is a bunch of 6th graders but, it’s set in a high school. Totally amps up the awkward and I love it!
Fun Fact: Rex, the martial art “instructor” is also the neighbor in Office Space
High school is like that too in countless places across the US and Canada and maybe others
“Your mom goes to college” was a constant saying in my house growing up.
Uncle Rico throwing that steak at Napoleon is one of the funniest things ever!
Your faces at the end, 🤣 😳 summed up the reaction of everyone who saw it in theatres, amused, confused, and conflicted . Parents were confused and kids around 13 thought their parents confusion was the funniest part of the movie. It is a great story tho, be yourself, love is real, focus on the future. Most accurate summary ever .🔥
This movie is wholesome and about inclusion and hilarous. Love it!
The part where Napoleon was testing the milk was an elective class called FFA. Future Farmers of America. They would teach you how to raise cattle, sheep, pigs, and anything else you would find on a farm. After raising whatever animal you chose you could take it to the county fair and try to win a ribbon and sell your animal.
Jon Gries, who plays Uncle Rico, was actually a vegetarian. While shooting the scenes of him eating steak, he would have to spit it out after doing each take.
And also, in the scene at 14:34 where he chucks the steak at Napoleon while riding his bike and it hits him in the face. That was actually Jon Gries who threw the steak off-camera. On the final take (The one you see in the movie), Gries threw the steak too excessively at Jon Heder (Napoleon) that it left a bruise on Heder's face afterwards.
I thought that was the case too but I just learned that he isn’t a vegetarian but he did keep having to spit it out because he doesn’t eat red meat and that’s what he was always eating throughout the movie. I don’t either, it grossed me out every time, lol.
I thought I read the actor who plays Pedro, couldn't keep from laughing at Napoleon getting hit, that he had to hurry off screen.
And I believe he got his first big break in another strange but great movie, starring Val Kilmer, called "Real Genius".
It took like 8 takes to get it that shot
I watched this movie for the first time with a friend and we were so confused. we just looked at each other asking wtf we just watched. We watched it a second time and laughed our asses off the whole way through. I guess we just weren't ready at first.
That's how it was for me too. The first time watching, I was trying to "get" it. Then I realized there was nothing to "get" and just enjoyed it for what it was the next time. One of my all time favorite movies. And Nacho Libre too.
Yes! I had the same reaction. Saw it in the theatre when it was first released....left wondering "wtf did I just watch"? Saw it again a few years later, it "clicked", and I laughed all the way through it. It's a movie that grows on you.
@@practicaldreamyr Same a bunch of us saw it in theater and had to watch it again then I bought it on dvd
Same here
Same, the first time it was just weird, but the second time it was hilarious
i love how this movie makes us feel like everyone hates the outcasts but in reality they love and respect them for being true to themselves
The director threw the steak that actually hit Napoleon in the face. The actor who plays Pedro has to run off on the bike unscripted because he started laughing. 😂😂
Not quite. The director was throwing it but kept missing. The actor who plays Rico used to pitch in college and offered to try. His first throw was the one in the film, nailed it
@@MojiBeaudid he throw it over them mountains?
@@MojiBeaustill true about the running off to not be seen laughing though
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! I can’t believe y’all are doing this, I’m so pumped. I guess you could say….it’s getting pretty serious.
When you watch ND for the first time, you’re like “WTAF did I just watch ?!”
Then you start quoting it and you realize you can’t stop, and it’s because you’re enjoying it.
And then you come across Gentlemen Broncos made by the same guys and realise ND is Norma by comparison
That is exactly what happened to me!
We had a kid in our school that closely resembled Napoleon in every way. No lie.
I love this movie! The dance at the end is one of my favorite scenes!
"But my lips hurt real bad!", "Tina you fat lard!", and Vote For Pedro shirts were a staple in my high school after this came out. 😂
This is the most accurate depiction of Small town Idaho you'll ever find. 100% legit
Napolean is the extreme Forest Gump. He didn’t experience what Forest did, but he is his best friend to Pedro.
I want you guys to know I brought this video to my parents, sat between them and we laughed (to tears at some points) watching along with you guys. Epic
This movie grows on you. The more you see it, the better it gets.
I loved how you care for the tots so much you screamed for the injustice when they were kicked
There is nothing more important in life than tots, to see such a murder take place shook me to my core.
If you dig the vibe of this movie, Wes Anderson films definitely need to be added to the list.
Agreed. I think The Life Aquatic would be the best start
The Royal Tannenbaums.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Moonrise Kingdom
Fantastic mr. Fox
I met the actor that plays Pedro at a Con once and he is one of the sweetest humans ever. Vote for Pedro! 😄
Napoleon is the embodiment of an awkward teen
I actually met Jon Heder at a ComicCon a few years ago. He was super cool and very generous with his time. And he autographed my DVD of the movie which I watch at least once or twice year.
So (and sorry for the double comment), but at my college we had an end of year show that included a “pimp strut.” And me, my friend and her gf did an ironic “pimp strut” as Napoleon, Pedro and Deb. I was Deb, complete with side ponytail and fanny pack, and we learned the entire Napoleon Dynamite dance which we did in front of the whole college. It was, to this day, one of THE most awesome performances I’ve ever been a part of. My only regret is that we didn’t have a Kip to complete the vibe.
That sounds awesome 😂
Any time my hair has been put up quickly and messily and off to the side my mom calls me "Deb"
That’s amazing 😂 don’t feel bad though, Kip didn’t go to their school (or any) anyway
The consecutive “NO!” When the tots got kicked was perfection
The FFA (Future Farmers of America) had all kinds of judging competitions in High School and beyond. Chickens, pigs goats, cows horses all that jazz. I believe he was in a Dairy competition in the movie. I was only at 1 dairy one during High School. There are Vo-ag (Vocational Agriculture) Schools all over America. Good times!
Not all of america, I think it’s a US thing... but yah exactly and good times until you start using your heart and brain and realise how effed up it all is...
@@Cassxowary "heart and brain" OK there moral police. Go ahead and hover back down to earth with the rest of us
Honestly, I googled this movie after I saw it to see who made it, because I genuinely thought it was based on a kid I went to school with in the 90s.
Everything about Napoleon is exactly like my old school friend. Even down to the drawings of Ligers and making up stuff about having "numchucks" in his locker.
I can't believe that when you listed all of Napolean's accomplishments during this film, you failed to mention that he tamed a honeymoon stallion.
I love this movie so much! I even had a Vote for Pedro t-shirt.
Thanks guys, for making my wildest dreams come true!
Cheers Australia xx
The grandma was great as Ronald MacDonald's mom on Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Deb was the little girl in the CLASSIC movie Waterworld.
What makes this movie absolutely hilarious is that the director says it is all based on events from his own personal life
Especially the school bus pulling up on a farmer while shooting the cow 🤣
When that old farmer was pointing and mumbling he actually said “Over there at by that creek bed I found some Shashonie arrowheads.” I grew up in rural Kentucky and often spent time with some old timers with no teeth and super heavy and thick accents so it was terribly hard for me to decipher. It was until someone else pointed out a few years later the subtitles tell it all lol
😂
I had my ex girlfriends mom watch this movie so she could decipher what he said lol she grew up in the town this was filmed in .
Shoshone* it’s a native tribe/group/type
And no, he said “over there in that pigpen I found a couple of Shoshone arrowheads”

I don't know why, but every time I watch this movie, it's like a surprise how hilarious it is. I always laugh for a couple days. That scene with the farmer, his shotgun , the cow, and the school bus absolutely kills me every time.
Everytime I see someone wearing a Vote for Pedro shirt in public I gave them a nod of respect

I didn't know anything about this movie and was pretty uncertain UNTIL i saw napoleon racked himself while "jumping" the ramp on his bike- then i was 100% on board! It's hard to describe but when you GET napoleon dynamite, you just do. It speaks to certain people like how some pieces of art does. You can't really explain why you like it and you don't really need to.
25:03 Fun fact : in the 2012 tmnt series, there was a character based around napoleon dynamite. He was a mutated frog named napoleon bonefrog, it was hilarious

One of the best movies ever. And it's family friendly! I can watch this movie over and over.
This is my absolute favorite. One of my all time pick me ups! I watch this at least once a year. 😂
Almost been a year! :p
My favorite part of this movie is the opening credits with the food and the names written in ketchup and mustard and stuff. It’s a great way to make the best out of a shoestring budget. I read that the budget for this movie was $400,000 in early 2000’s money. That’s impressive.
Some of the best films ever made were shot on a shoestring budget, like Monty Python and the Holy Grail. That movie was shot on a budget of £200,000, in 1974.
Napoleon Dynamite is forever an all time classic 😂

Deadass, in my small Alabama town, a church told my sister to burn anything to do with the movie because of the whole "Gosh" thing. I think they just hated it because they didn't want to be reminded just how cringe small-town life can be. That and it probably disgusted these people that the awkward people in life were actually being rewarded for a change.
And also... It’s “christ”ian religions (utterly in-Christ-like), they find offence in anything people are interested in more than them... they want to be the main interest, the control, have a monopoly on everyone’s minds and lives, not realising they’re driving more and more away with their increasingly cultish mentality and behaviour, rightfully so because they’re basically cults
This movie is amazing. No swearing, sexual innuendos and its still hilarious. Super positive premise. Top 10 comedy.
Classic.
Please consider continuing the View Askewniverse by watching Mallrats(1995), Written/Directed/Starring Kevin Smith. More Jay & Silent Bob is always a good thing.
My bff and I did Pedro and Napoleon for a Halloween party one year. Was so fun staying in character all night! Lol
I have not watched this movie in years, but my husband and I still quote it on a regular basis.
This movie came when I was in high school and after it came out EVERYONE was quoting this movie and taking on Napoleons “uh gosh” inflections and character. Also “make yourself a dang quesadilla, Napoleon”! It’s so awkwardly hilarious…
The budget for this was $400,000 box office made 44 million. Jon Heder the actor who played napoleon was only paid $1,000 for the role
This is the greatest movie ever. Brings me back to better days when I would always annoy my sister by telling her to Vote for Pedro
its a movie with feel and emotions!not just mindless action and dialogue!
So glad to see this and I needed some Napoleon dance this Friday night. Thanks! (a mom)
The part where the wife is disappointed in her husband not being able to tear that plastic bowl gets me everytime!
It's arguably one of the most bizarre movie of all time but it's got a ton of heart and originality.
You’re from a big city, aren’t you... it’s very realistic and accurate...
@@Cassxowary I'm sorry but it's not realistic at all but it's a great movie regardless.

Great analysis, kudos to the actors too. This is such a low key wholesome, fun feelgood movie. I never heard of it until a year or so ago. And I've seen it twice since. And s bunch of reactions... it really lifts your spirit. Everybody's been Napoleon at least once their lives... the awqward one. Being a teen is difficult time finding your way while the whole world seems against you and nobody understands you. I've definately been there and in some way I still am...
Every line of this movie, just *chef’s kiss *
I remember when this movie came out. Everyone and their mother was talking about it and we thought it was fucking hilarious (which, it still is). The amount of times I heard kids in school imitating Napoleon during that scene where he eats the tots in class. 😆
I also remember there were actually rumors that Jon Heder, the actor who plays Napoleon, had died after this movie was made which, of course, wasn't true.
They actually made this into an animated TV series on Fox I believe and 'vote for Pedro' t-shirts were very popular and you may still see them around still today. Napoleon Dynamite was a cultural phenomena for a minute there.
Napoleon dynamite is an accurate depiction of life before the internet. Life was weird back then.
There is internet in this movie, of the mid90s variety.
they literally used the internet to buy a 'time machine', and Kip's relationship occurred because he was spending all day online
Also, the early 00s had internet, but around then, and like Kip and Rico talked about, it’s dial-up, because broadband(/wifi) companies don’t bother with tiny places in the middle of fields/other nature, it’s too isolated, so they still use dial-up
But it seems their internet is slow as hell (minimum speed) for 3/4 of the people despite having wifi and all the other ways of getting internet… only a quarter have fast internet (the upper middle classes and rich)
My grandma loved this movie! She would go on about how stupid it was but still laughed her ass off!
Bro this movie is a gah dam national treasure!!!! It is so underrated!! I was laughing so hard at some of your reactions, you guys are awesome!!! ha ha ha!!!
This movie came out my senior year of high school and when we had superhero day, one of my classmates dressed up as Napoleon--Vote for Pedro shirt, jeans, moon boots, curly hair and glasses. I hadn't seen the movie yet, but it was hilarious. Then I saw the movie, and it just was so off-the-wall that I loved it.
"you're happy to see him?" Lmao almost choked on my sub.
This movie gets better the more times you watch it!
Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) actually permed his hair for the role & his dancing was improvised. There is actually a short lived cartoon show where every cast from the movie reprised their roles. It wasn't bad.
