love the videos with Bil. He's the perfect example of an old school backyard mechanic when close was good enough because that's just the way they did it and it worked. A lot of respect for Bill.
Yea, don’t sweat the petty stuff and don’t pet the sweaty stuff
Dam right😂 slick fitty 2👍☃️🎄🎁🎅MERRY Christmas puddin from ATOMS hamradio ⚛⚛
Truth
You should give the truck to bill for Christmas
Was awesome to see Bill so much again.
Bill's one hell of a mechanic!
Hey man since you're not butting the a c stuff back on you should have taken the ac EVAP out to
Bill is just adjusting the valves the old school way. It works and he is right,,,,,no counting ,,,,no worries. All is good
Bill is just a mechanic genius because he's showing the younger generation how to work on stuff like puddin it's never boring watching somebody else and learn something new that they're not familiar with
People like Bill need medals . they are keepin Hotrodding around. Learn all you can. We need to keep the old school knowledge around
Don't let Mortske see that flexi hose on the shop vac. He'll go nuts!
Wild bill is a talented guy and it was a pleasure to watch you and him work side by side .
I really enjoy seeing bill and slick join you and the banter you guys have 👍
mancsblue That's what happens when you have been friends for years.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496
Yep the best of chemistry
@@mancsblue I've known my best friend from high school for 49 years. And if we can make it till 2024 that will make it 50. And during that time we've had some good times and some bad times. And I just talked to him Dec. 12, 2023. He's the brother I never had.
@@lilorbielilorbie2496 my best friends have always been my 2 brother. It don’t get no better than that. Can’t beat a loyal friend.
I love when Puddin is on Bill's show.
It’s good to see Bill’s light shining! He’s functional as well as decorative! 😎👍
Bill is an absolute legend!!!! Had an ole timer just like him to teach me at an early age....
Love when bill visits! ❤️
Thanks Puddin! It was good seeing Bill. Tell him to keep stopping by. Same for Slick Fiddy.
Quadrajet rebuild: "whatever that thing does". 😂😂😂 "The bouncy thingy with the two rods danglin". I'm dying of laughter here 😂😂😂, I just rebuilt one of these.
The carburetor drips from its base in the intake, causing the rings to wash up and causing oil to burn through. On the base there is 2 plugs , they need to be cleaned up and reseal with epoxy. It also causes the engine to take longer to start after a few days without starting it.
Very very interesting. I have this same problem i believe. Intake an carb combo coming in for me .
Yes the well plugs leak on a quadrajet. People JB weld them to cure the issue👍
Man that little truck is a smooth ride. She just wanted back on the streets.
Was fun watching Mr. Wild Bill in the shop. Thanks for another great video puddin'.
I was always taught to use compressed air in the spark plug holes to keep the valves from dropping, while changing the seals. Derek from Vice Grip Garage sells hood re-enforcement brackets for those square body PU trucks, . You should really consider ordering a couple so your hood doesn't taco, Good to go Gentlemen!
Puddin' could whip up those brackets in no time. He's a fabricator.
Good seeing Bill! Thanks for taking us on the journey with the short bed!
The JB weld is there to seal those two plugs on the secondary main wells. This is a classic Q-Jet leaking point. There is also a piece of foam in the cavity in the throttle base to back up the JB Weld. I’ve built hundreds of Q Jets, used to have boxes full of these things for spares.
Saved me some typing.
You're better man than I. The way I fixed quadrajets was to throw them away and put an Edelbrock on it. The little Holley 2-barrel progressive that you found Pintos and Bobcats had that same kind of leak. It was a good design by Weber licensed to Holly, but Holly's manufacturing was really poor.
@@That70sChannel It seems that is the prevailing opinion, my experience just happens to be quite different. I have used QJets on dozens of cars, they are good carburetors. They are also one of the most misunderstood carburetor on the market. Are they perfect? No. But are they Junk? Hardly. My first pick for a square bore carb is the AFB/Edelbrock and for a spread bore carb, the Q-Jet. For a street driven car, a properly tuned and modified Q-Jet will offer the best drivability of anything short of EFI. Once a Q-Jet is properly tuned, you close the hood and forget the carburetor, you rarely can do this with a Holley. If you want to enjoy the car and drive the car, use an AFB or a Q-Jet, if you want to constantly work on carburetors, get a Holley. The Holley carb works on the track and has a multitude of tuning parts and aftermarket support, it is easier to understand and there is a very deep pool of tuners who know how to make it work. It took me many hours of work and experimentation, as well as reading whatever books were available to learn the secrets of Q-Jet carbs, their limitations and what does and does not work. All of this was back before the internet and CZcams, so learning was not so simple. I’ll close with this statement, the smaller 750 CFM Q-Jet was used on GM engines from 230 cubic inches all the way up to a 500 cubic inch Cadillac engine, this is the best example of the adaptability, tune ability and flexibility of the Q-Jet design. All that said, I’ll take EFI any day of the week.
@@mlynch001 I think the problem most people have with them is what Puddin' showed off taking his apart. It's not quite as straightforward to take apart and put back together, and if you're not working on them a lot then it's easy to get frustrated and just want to toss the whole thing in the trash. And if you're at the point where you need to take it apart, it's running like crap, so you get the impression that it's just junk. You never remember the whole time it was running fine with no complaints, or you just never owned it when it was running good to begin with.
@@bruwin PERFECT!!
I can tell you from 50+ years of carburetion and tuning experience; that many a good carburetor (ALL Brands) have been ruined by people "fixing them" or "tuning them". The engine does not "run right", so it has to be a "bad carburetor", Right? After all the carburetor was the first thing you saw when you opened the hood. It has to be "bad". As Puddin says, "don't worry about that cylinder with low compression" . . . . or a worn out cam lobe . . . or a bent pushrod . . . . or 50 leaky vacuum lines . . . or fouled plugs . . . . or some other ignition problem. After all, It just HAS TO BE the carburetor that is causing the issue.
You are correct, the Q-Jet "learning curve" is a bit difficult, compounded by the fact that the darn things work for hundreds of thousands of miles and never need "Fixed". GM literally installed these things by the MILLIONS every year; for DECADES! I would bet that if you looked at the manufacturing numbers, that a majority of cars and trucks in the late 60's,early 70's, right up into the early EFI era had some sort of Q-Jet carburetor on top. Ford even used the Q-Jet on some 460 Lincolns for a short time. Carter went as far as developing and manufacturing the AVS as their own "in house" answer to the Q-Jet. Chrysler used the AVS on many of their larger V-8 engines. Holley even jumped into the game with the "Spread Bore", Q-Jet replacement, which as I remember was a 750 CFM.
Puddin working on that Q-Jet took me back to my high school days when I actually learned the ins and outs of the Q-Jet. I was a great trip down memory lane, that is why I love his content and his channel.
Thanks Puddin for inviting Bill, to go over checking valves and lash, I deffo felt like we all waked away blessed with some new knowledge
Bill is Puddin's Mojo! We need more Bill!
Gm tilt columns have a pot metal swivel that goes from that mechanical side of the ignition switch to the rod that pushes on the electrical side of the ignition switch, and they are known for breaking. Make sure the rod on the replace column you get moves with the key or youll be in the same boat.
yup, sold dozens of them at the old parts house
I still have the tools that make taking apart that GM Tilt column easier and quicker. It was a good design that just needed a few drops of LOCTITE on those screws that notoriously loosen up and cause the column to flop around. Not to mention those cheap "pot metal" rack and gears for the switch.
Nice watching Bill work on engine with you.❤
Love seeing 👀 bill in action 🎬 here. WE LOVE BILL!!! WE LOVE BILL!!! WE LOVE BILL!!!
Puddin that truck is looking good. There is a fresh air intake hose for the air cleaner that goes to the Radiator support. Get a steering column
at the Junkyard.
It's good to see Bill helping you out.
Good to see Bill again.
Little trick is shove small rope in each cylinder and turn the engine by hand until tight. Put all u can in it and it won’t let the valves drop then just pull it out when done and go to the next 1. Love the content brother!!
Thats not a little trick, THAT'S HUGE trick. lol. I converted my heads to screw in studs, on the car. The rope trick was FTW 100%. lol.
Great to see Bill so much this episode. He makes things even more fun.
Professor Bill leading engine class today!
Bill made this episode... Not taking anything away from puddin, I love his videos... But Bill is hilarious, especially when he's not trying to be. 😂
Love the video. You guys finally realized that the viewer love longer more more detailed videos. Thank you for listening
Seafoam works very well at cleaning upper cylinders of carbon and sludge like Berryman Seafoam was invented by a mechanic in Minnesota around 1942 at a Buick dealer and it won't hurt 😊
You can set the piston so it's coming back up, then feed some nylon rope through the spark plug hole, as much as you can, then turn the motor over by hand until the piston presses up against the rop e, that'll stop the valves dropping 😁
I was just going to comment this exact same thing! Did it many times, once while in a campground.
That's the way I do mine.
Pretty sure we all want a Bill episode, I'm sure he has a colourful story.
Love when Bill is around. He is how I learned.😊😅
Bill is Legendary 🙌🏼
Hot Damn It's Time For Another One 🤘🤘
Gotta love when Bill and Slick 50 are around and that old truck is turning out amazing keep up the awesome work
PUDD I watch yor stuff all the time it keeps me young
I’m 66 old there PUDD PUDD
You guys definitely saved the life of that engine , just in time. Ready fur another 100,000.
Bill is the man I think you should give him the Truck!
I'm thinking he might ?
Maybe that's why he has him helping him ?
Time will tell I guess.
Sure looks better now in the engine bay though.
Good to see Bill again. Glad you built the new shop within cycling distance !
finally got around to watching the whole video, been insanely busy and have been watching this over 3 days is a blessing and a curse, love the longer videos but hate not finishing it in one go, thanks Puddin for everything you put into every one of these videos, hope to get one of your shirts soon. greetz from the netherlands!!
There is NO WAY I would have been able to put all that back together!! I can take it all apart, just can NOT for the life of me remember how crap goes back together.. I take pictures AND video and it doesn’t help me at all.. lol.. Absolutely GREAT job @Puddin.. I can’t believe that thing fired right back up that easy.. I can’t wait to hear what your end goal is with this truck.. Stay blessed brother!! Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
Nice to see the old man Bill again should be more on video bud
Love it when Bill shows up!
Watching this video,I agree with the thought that Bill is one good old school mechanic. I can’t believe you couldn’t hear me yelling about the two screws in the middle that need to come out😆.
Keep up the great work Puddin!
Check the trans to see if it is low the modulator valve mite be bad and leaking back in the carb make it smoke some times
Love how you mess with Mortske and DD etc, and you all go at each other back and forth! Keeps all the channels supporting each other! ❤️
The way bill did the rockers is how my buddy told me to do them. Works everytime.
The GMC is lookin good puddin! I usually use a utility knif e on old hoses that you are going to replace and cut a slit in them where they are connected at and you can just peel the hose off easily then. (heater hose on the radiator)
Very good show tonight Puddin good to see Bill again keep up the good work
You gave her what Derek calls the Italian tune up with the Berryman's LOL
I have one friend like Bill and Slick. Count your blessings Puddin, they are rare breeds, my friend. Most want you to help them, but when you need help, all you hear is excuses and crickets.
The engine sounds strong and smooth - check timing and dwell for final tuning. The valves are super quiet. - good job Bill. The oil will burn off around the valves and smoke will clear up. Change the oil, run straight 30. Remove the column and have it rebuilt. Take your time and enjoy the process. This old truck needs lots of maintenance and repairs. The final product will come out amazing in due time.
No way never run 30W in sbc ...best to run 15w40 diesel oil . Got all them vitamins an minerals an dinosaurs . Or 10w40 .
@@rockkhound943 That's not always true using Diesel Oil in a gas engine.
@NoWr2Run it is for pre 91 sbc an bbc
@@rockkhound943 T.Y. SIR, Didn't know that, ALWAYS LEARNING.
@NoWr2Run I'm with ya I love learning new things. As long as they have flat tappet cams 15w40 can be used . It's just all around a better quality an more forgiving on older V8's .
Filling the combustion chamber with some paracord through the sparkplug hole holds the valves up without the chance of the air pushing the piston down. Just be sure to leave some hanging out the sparkplug hole.
I did the same job you guys are doing and I had an old timer teach me a trick that works extremely well since you’ve already got the spark plug pulled out you take a piece of clothesline and you stuff it in the spark plug hole is best you can and then you runthe rod all the way upper piston and it keeps pressure on the valve and then you can do what you want and it’s harder to push the valve down by accident whenever you’re trying to put the keepers back in
I used cotton rope I think 1/4”.
Yep. I also use rope in the cylinder when I’m doing that. Works great.
On most car channels, just as soon as you fired that truck up , they go to the road and try to smoke both tires down. The first left hand turn they take it at 45 , and throw the battery across the engine bay. And burn the trans up. I like that you take care of stuff.
In a day where you can google or CZcams a question and get a million conflicting answers, having friends like Bill is priceless.
Even thou the returns look ok on top, the oil returns can still be blocked. The head gaskets kinda half cover the returns. All you need to do is get a foot long piece of 3/16-1/4 inch winch cable, chuck it in a drill and feed it down the return holes. Clears the sludge out and "trims" the gaskets. I did this bunches of times. Don't worry about the engine turning over when you pressurize the cylinder. It ain't gonna hurt anything, just keep the pressure on till you get the keepers back in. I worked on Chevy engines for 47 years. Put the A/C stuff back on, that's the easiest system to work on that GM made. Put some air pressure in it. Probably find the condenser has a small hole in it. You can charge the system with r134 with out doing anything but adding the service port convertors.
Also back in their 70's vehicles they ran the best a/c compressors on the market, good old Frigidaire, My '71 Chevelle blew 31 degrees out the panel and crotch cooling vents all the time with R-12 in it. was fun getting friends to ride with me, all windows up and breathing steam out yer mouth. Was like stepping into the freezer box on yer Frigidaire freezer.
Let’s go puddin another Monday action.
Tuesday*
I’m from the home of the quadajet and we learned to fix them at birth. My buddy had a dual carb tunnel ran topped off with 2 quadajets. Its was crazy loud at WOT.
Puddin: On this episode of Puddins Fab Shop, Bill Things
Everyone: Christmas has come early.
What a Solid Build In the Works!!! thanks
for sharing each step
That bump till you take the slack out and 3/4 turn is brilliant!
Also a tip for Puddin’. The best thing to cut zip ties with to avoid cuts from sharp ends? A cheap pair of nail clippers. Works perfectly. Cuts off flat at the wedge.
Froggys Christmas song is an all time great!
Puddin, you need a part's washer and an ultrasonic cleaner. 😂
You read my mind…….
Wish we had trucks like that up here, perfect project for my boy and I
I love Bill. I wish he did Audio books with that low compression voice🤣
Puddin time
I know why you lower everything so you can just lean over the fenders to work on the motors with ease.
Christmas came early, a two hour video from Puddin. A three hour video wouldn’t be long enough from this guy. Great video and good work on the truck. Patiently waiting for the next!
Well it is good to see Bill in the new shop.
When we did valve seals we just fed a bunch of nylon rope into cylinder and turned motor by hand till it bound up on the rope then changed valve seals, valves cannot fall because of rope. Worked perfect
Bill sounds identical to Chong😂. Such a cool dude to work with. Yall work good together in the shop. Look forward to future projects
That sunset view was worth the move.
Puddin, i think you are at your best when problem solving and wrenching on old iron. Bill is a real asset for your show!
Old hot rodder's trick: Idle up the carb and run a coke bottle full of water down the carb every 6 months. Helps keep the carbon build up down. My motor was built nearly 30 years ago and still runs fresh as new!
A whole lotta Wild Man Bill! Even a Puddin' Pop Cameo! Nice start to the Winter, gettin' it runnin' good! Hot Damn!
My favorite channel. A little more exposure and this guy will be a huge youtube star. Love Bill too!
never been in a q-jet before, God help us when it comes to puttin the top back on. with all them flopping rods dangling around. and gettin the choke lever hooked in . This is going to be classic. Might as well call the boys with teh white jackets now. See ya in a few months Puddin.
Heck yeah!!!! Man oh man was it good seeing Bill.
There is a rack and pinion style gear in the other side of the key switch that connects to that rod that runs to the key switch. There is a tool for removing the lock plate at the top and a tool for taking the pivots out of the tilt in the column. Should be easily fixable. See you next week!!
6:08 that top service right there.
Puddin that thing right there is gonna end up staying with you and running with less problems than anything on the property. You (and Bill) did a good job!
Let's get that compressor outside so we can hear Pudin and Bill conversate😂😂😂😂
Looking forward to seeing the truck done and where it is going. Hopefully more Firebird content soon and maybe Puddin will get the Muscle car bug and get a Chevelle on the Channel one day!
I am 75 now but when I was 12 I had 3 cars and up till now I have had over a thousand. I shortened a few trucks before many people thought about doing it. Back then you could buy short box pickup bed trailers cheap and long box trucks cheaper than sporty short beds. You bring back memories when I was young and tough like you. Keep up the creative ideas and keep all of your fans enjoying you on youtube.
Nice design with the vice grips holding oil gauges. I like that idea
Don't throw the ac stuff away! That stuff is gold to us who live in the southern states where it gets to be hotter than the surface of the sun in the summer! Even if the pump is junk and the dryer and evap core are junk, it helps with identification!
First time I have seen someone do valve seals with the head still on, on CZcams! Good budget technique!
Shop is looking FANTASTIC with the new addition. PuddinHQ for sure!
Puddin, before you go to tear apart an engine, put a quart of transmission fluid in it and run it for a little while. Transmission fluid has a detergent in it, it will help loosen and break up ll the sludge inside the engine. After you tear it apart and change the valve guides, springs, etc, change the oil. The sludge will mostly be in the oil pan.
That was awesome Puddin love to watch your videos you have fun while doing it also nice to see bill coming in and helping you great to have friends like that don’t see him to often he does know what he’s doing besides riding a bike lol Monday videos are the best nice and long are good to 😀👍🏻
Puddin, just start the truck every other day and the smoke goes away!! Italian tune up to the rescue😂😂
Smoking out the pipes is likely the vacuum modulator on transmission. When the diaphragm fails in it, the transmission fluid gets pulled into engine by vacuum and burned in the cylinders. To check, pull the vacuum hose off modulator and see if it's wet or dripping out. If you get a new modulator (usually under $20) get the adjustable one. The shift points can be fine tuned to your liking.
Hey Puddin 👋, always cool to see Bill stop by. The old truck sounds good and over time it should clear up. The steering columnis worth fixing. It just a part the rod attaches too. Have a great week ahead.👋
Great to have Bill around, he's a classic! Great work on the ol GMC, I know you're thinking of giving it away, but I say sell it, like on bring a trailer, as you're already going to do a give away s10.(and put the money you make into other projects/giveaways)Thanks Puddin!
Am I the only one missing the legendary carpet shears from the OG Shop?! :D
thanks for taking the time to share and make the video
