2004 Porsche 911 40th Anniversary: The 996 Sweet Spot? / Modern Classic Review

  • This is an honest and detailed review of the Porsche 911 40th Anniversary Edition, also known as the 40 Jahre. A relatively less known model that was a contemporary of the popular 996 Carrera 4S, but offering more power, less weight and a sharper focus. Half way to the GT3 it was said at the time… could this be the sweet spot in the 996 range for the modern classic collector?

Hi Gez, we met at Eurotunnel this morning and the penny only dropped after I've got to France :-)... I've remembered watching a couple of your CZcams videos about a year ago and I was quite annoyed with myself for not recognising you straightaway since I really found your videos to be very good indeed.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and hope you've had a good trip to Germany. The DeLorean looks great, always loved the car, and it is nice to see how many people take photos and are genuinely interested in the car. I don't think there are many cars out there that can attract that kind of interest. By the way, your videos are really good, it would be nice to see more in the future, maybe on different cars? It was great chatting with you. Cheers, Lucas

Hi Lucas - great to meet you too! How random you’d already seen some of my stuff on CZcams.
The channel was originally intended to be about running and cars - unfortunately it ended up turning into something else! Once I recover I will definitely be getting back on the case though - got lots of cars I want to feature!
Hope your trip is going well too, and safe drive home again :)

RUN-DMC - Nice review on the 996 theme ... However one question remains to me " unanswered “ as roughly in every 996 vid when it comes to IMS failing rates !...
      We all hear numbers starting from 1% going through 3% ... 5% ... 8% ... ending at 10% depending on reviewers ...
Now my point : Dedicated Porsche specialized magazines stated long ago that during the 996 worldwide career , a substancial number of owners have had their engines " replaced " during a regular service without the dealers in question having told a single word to the owners ( supposedly future potencial failure prone engine detected during diagnosis ) ... so , these are costumers which are convinced until today they have the original engine but ... " they have not " !... Most of these engines " would have " failed at some point sooner or later , right ?
      So my ultimate question :
On which of all these " rates " that number of engines ( the ones explained above ) are also included ?... 1%?... 3%?... 5%?... 8%?... or 10% ?...
      From a 2003 996 C4S owner also " worried " with its IMSB !... 👍
