- Well this is a loaded topic. Gavin gets extremely hot and bothered on this weeks Great Debate while he and Cal debate whether social media has made a positive or negative impact on hunting in the United States. There are a million plus duck hunters and it seems there’s a great divide on this specific topic. On one end, it presents a great way for sharing a community of hunters and meeting people to hunt with. On the other hand, has it turned us into haters and made kids afraid to go out and fail? What do you think? Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more waterfowl content

It is true there are less duck stamp sales now but for the last 20 years they have been fairly flat hovering around the 1.5 million mark. Which would kind of make the argument social media hasn't helped increase hunters. At peak stamp sales reached 2.4 million (1972). Sales have never really recovered from the severe drought in the late 1980's. That really plummeted stamp sales with the lowest sales in 1992 at 1.28 million. You guys both make valid points. I think social media has definitely helped hunters level up skills and certainly helped the waterfowl industry sell more products. It is also much easier to network with other hunters out of your area. In your area I don't think it makes much a difference. Just as easy to meet people who like hunting out and about. I think morals/ethics/safety is best learned through a more traditional model than through social media.
I think it is causing competition/jealousy towards others hunters. I’ve hunted with a lot of people that don’t consider a good hunt unless you get a limit. Seems like people are hunting for that new profile pic rather than the true experience of enjoying the sport.
It's a double edge sword. It helps others easily get into the sport. However some of the channels can teach toxic immoral hunting habits/styles etc.
