    I always thought this was the best adventurers set. Good mix of the classic lego style; chrome parts, raised baseplate, classic dragon, paired with some modern molds and elements. Great era of Lego as they were just getting out of financial trouble and really starting to improve upon their sets whilst still having that classic charm and style.

      Thats a good way of putting it, its kinda like old meets new. I felt like this building the set too

    This is definitely one of the best sets to have come out of my favorite year of the 2000s, which says a lot considering that Lego was in a dangerous financial state around that time. I unfortunately never had this set, or any of the others from the China arc of Orient Expedition. I remember around the fourth quarter of 2007, I would frequently look through a pdf of this set's instructions, because I had never seen a mechanic involving the gear racks under the wheel sections at that point. After 19 years, it's also surreal how many pieces are rare, or even unique to this set. On the "Half Track"-as it's known that the heroes ride on, nearly every piece in the old light and dark greys were retired after this set, including the 1x4x2 radiator grille in dark grey-which was actually exclusive to the theme. The cab and the Guardian's helmet in dark grey also came in "Studios" sets (1380 and 1382) the year before this. The treads on the "Half Track" were also retired just last year. The 8x8 brick in dark grey also appeared in the first version of "Cloud City" (10123) the same year before being retired, while the 12x24 brick in that color was exclusive to this set. Nearly every piece in earth orange (Mata brown/old brown) was retired after that year, though the 1x4x1 fence in that color only appeared here and in a Harry Potter set (4719) released three monthes before. The metalized gold keys also came in eight other sets from that theme before and after this. Weirdly, the Golden Dragon's upper jaw also came in a Knights' Kingdom II set (8800) the year after this, and its wings in transparent red came in a Vikings set (7019) in '05. Most of the sand green parts in this set are also rare, with the 2x2 45-degree inverted roof tile being exclusive. Many of the others such as the 1x3 and 1x8 brick, made their final standard appearance in that color here. Only the 1x6 brick and 1x1 nose cone survived. And most shockingly, the standard 2x10 brick in red was actually retired last year...

      Hey thanks for all the info Collin, interesting stuff. And completely agree, definitely one of the best sets from the era

    Helmet goes on his head among the golden sword and shield from India & Everest to unlock and get to Golden Dragon.
    The Guardian requires all 3 to get in, he's just standing there like a statue.
    Problem with the keys is they're not that secret to make the cave unlockable.

    Yeah this Set is an easy 10/10 and was always a favourite of mine. I remember fondly playing with it as a kid. Orient Expedition is so amazing.
    An interesting Story about Baron von Barron: LEGO did switch up the names quite a bit back then. Originally in the egypt line there were 2 villains: Baron von Barron (guy with hookhand) and Lord Sam Sinister (guy with black top hat). However the Baron in other countries went by a variety of names, such as Evil Eye, Mister Hates and Hookhand. Sam sinister was sometimes refered to as Slyboots. When the Dino Island came out, it only had Baron von Barron and no longer the OG Sam Sinister. And if that wasnt confusing enough, in Dino Island sets and comics more often then not the Baron is refered to as Sam Sinister... i guess in the end even the designers got confused with all the names and for Orient Expedition mashed the two characters together as the new Sam sinister shares many design choices of the two. To me he will always be the Baron in a different outfit as he has more in Common with the old Baron than with the old Sam Sinister...

    • @TieTheLegoGuy
      @TieTheLegoGuy  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey thanks for the info Jonas, I found this confusing honestly. Appreciate the clear up. Also it is really good. Easily in the top 5 Adventurers sets, honestly top 3 being Anubis, Ancient Ruins and this one I feel

    • @AClassicBrick
      @AClassicBrick Před 2 lety

      @@TieTheLegoGuy yeah they had this with a few characters back then. But hey, leaves everything to the imagination.
      As much as it pains me to say it, but I think 5986 wouldnt be in my top 3 😅 I think the Sphinx has something over it, but Achus temple sits in a solid fourth spot 😃

    Sam Sinister is Baron Von Barron, just different regional name. It’s like how in different regions Charles Lightning is called Dr. Kilroy. Also in the Egypt theme, the dude with the top hat is Slyboots and the guy with the magnifying glass and hook is Sam Sinister/ Baron Von Barron. Sorry, I know it’s confusing.

    Interesting how the Asian minifigures are depicted as having almond-shaped eyes. I thought lego intended for minifigures to be race-neutral by having all minifigures have yellow skin in these early sets, but it appears they weren't sticking to that ideal in this set. Funny enough east Asian people were once categorized as being of the "yellow" race so this set would definitely have some controversy today.

    I think the backstory of sam sinister has something to do with the egypt subtheme. First he is sam sinister accompanying von baron on his treasure hunt. But von baron get cursed by the pharaoh in egypt (and ends up dying according to the haunted mansion drop tower sets painting). After von barons death sam sinister must have continued in the spirit of von baron and end up being lord sam sinister in the orient expedition subtheme. Just a theory 😅
